Much of society seems to be built on a scarcity mentality. It’s a mentality that tells people that there is a lack in life, that opportunities are few and far between. This is, of course, useful for Marketing and Advertisers because if people believe that there is a lack, then you can get them to buy stuff; thus, the economy and society can continue to thrive and prosper by reinforcing a scarcity mentality in people.

The scarcity mentality can be quite painful for the individual and create a lot of unnecessary fear, anxiety and desperation. An abundance mentality, on the other hand, tells you that there are always new chances and opportunities. This relieves much of the pressure you may feel if you have a scarcity mentality that makes you think that you’ve only got one shot right now. Or it makes you feel like an utter failure just because you stumbled and things didn’t work out. An abundance mentality can help you improve your performance since with it, you’re creating a lot less pressure and anxieties within your own mind.

Do you have a roof over your head? Food in the refrigerator? A little cash in your pocket? Do you have friends and family? A partner? A pet? A favorite book on your bookshelf? Focus on what you have, and you will soon see how wealthy you are.

Tip #2: Recognise your limiting beliefs

Abundant thinking is the practice of actively thinking in a way which promotes an abundance mindset. And yet, having been raised in a world which teaches us to look for competition, threats, and negatives, we tend to hold many beliefs which limit our ability to have a positive attitude.

If you find yourself thinking “There’s only one way I will win here”, or “My success is not enough when compared to these other people’s success”, realise that these thoughts are limiting you.

For example, there are always alternate routes to the end goal. Might your definition of “winning” be limiting in itself? Similarly, if you compare your success to that of others, how will you ever be satisfied with your accomplishments? Recognizing your limiting beliefs is an important step to letting them go and moving toward an abundance mindset.

Tip #3: Understand the power of your thoughts

Much of how we see the world is directly controlled by our own thoughts. If we look for scarcity, we will find it. If we think that there is never enough to go around, there never will be. Abundant thinkers take these negative thoughts and turn them into positive thoughts.

Abundant thinkers know that the first major step toward achieving an abundant mentality is first to understand the power of their thoughts. Once you realise that your thoughts directly influence not only your attitude, but the world around you, it becomes infinitely easier to dispense with fear and embrace life.

You breathe in. You breathe out. I breathe in. I breathe out. We both need oxygen to survive. Would you worry that there would not be enough oxygen for both of us? Of course not—air is abundant.

Now imagine we are scuba diving and my scuba tank starts to malfunction. I signal that I need to share the oxygen in your tank. Suddenly the air becomes a precious commodity. Its scarcity makes us worry. What if there isn’t enough for both of us?

Our attitudes toward scarcity and abundance in other aspects of our lives greatly influence our success. Stephen Covey explains these concepts beautifully in his classic The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He writes:

Most people are deeply scripted in what I call the Scarcity Mentality. They see life as having only so much, as though there were only one pie out there. And if someone were to get a big piece of the pie, it would mean less for everybody else.

The Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit—even with those who help in the production. They also have a hard time being genuinely happy for the success of other people.

The Abundance Mentality, on the other hand, flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth or security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in the sharing of prestige, recognition, profits and decision-making. It opens possibilities, options, alternatives and creativity.

Covey tells us that when you live in a world of scarcity, you compete for available resources, even when there is an abundance of them.

When I speak to audiences across the country, I often hear about the challenges people face in the workplace. More often than not, these difficulties stem from a scarcity mindset.

Leaders who allow a scarcity mindset to work its way into their culture pay a high price. When resources (money, opportunity, recognition) are perceived to be limited, paranoia, fear and politics thrive. In this environment, people become nervous and afraid to make a mistake. As a result, teamwork and innovation suffer.

Effective leaders, on the other hand, develop and model an abundance mindset. By doing so, they create an environment where they can positively influence their team—and where their employees can thrive. Here’s how to spread this positive mentality through your team.

Offer words of appreciation. Let people know how much you value their contributions. People want to know that their work matters. Your influence and happiness will increase in direct proportion to the appreciation that you show your team. I have found this to be one of the fastest and simplest ways to build a more abundant life.

Choose to see opportunity. The next time your team is faced with an obstacle, flip it around and consider it an opportunity. Face the challenge with optimism and make sure your team sees you modeling that attitude. You’ll be surprised at how quickly problems dissolve and how soon optimism becomes your default mechanism.

Remind yourself that there is more than enough. As Covey said, there is enough pie to go around, so break that nasty habit of comparing yourself to others. Repeat after me: There is plenty for everyone. Say the sentence often enough, and it’ll become second nature.

Carefully select the company you keep. Mindsets are contagious. Limit your time with “the-glass-is-half- empty” people.

Spend time in reflection. Learn to acknowledge and appreciate all the positives in your life and work. Gratitude is a powerful aspect of an abundant mindset. A grateful heart is at the center of an abundant life. In his book, Life, the Truth, and Being Free, coach and speaker Steve Maraboli says, “Those with a grateful mindset tend to see the message in the mess. And even though life may knock them down, the grateful find reasons, if even small ones, to get up.”

Give more of what you want. Although it may sound counterintuitive, one of the best ways to increase your abundance is to give. Don’t feel like you have enough time? Slip away from your obligations, even if just for an hour, to help someone in need. Don’t feel like you have enough money? Give to someone less fortunate. In other words, be a river, not a reservoir. Giving is sure to put you in a more abundant and appreciative frame of mind.

In The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, I wrote about The Law of the Mirror. It states that people do what people see. Reflect on the influence you have on your team. Which mindset do you model? Do you see a positive, abundant mentality reflected in your team leaders? Or are they pessimistic, stingy and competing among themselves for your attention? Remember, you set the tone for your organization.

I challenge you to foster an abundance-minded culture this month. Encourage people to see options and opportunity when they face obstacles or challenges. Express appreciation regularly, and recognize others who do the same. Communicate and share your hopes for yourself and your team.

Remember, we are all leaders. Leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less. We influence the people around us wherever we are, whether it’s at home, at work, on the highway or in the checkout line. As you build an authentic and sincere abundance mindset, you will find that your positive outlook can spill over and influence the people around you.

Often when you hear the word abundance, you think of financial stability. That’s because the world is geared toward the importance of money, how large your home is, and what you purchase. But abundance can be so much more than that.

Simply put, abundance is a “large quantity of something.” This could be:

  • Love
  • Health
  • Happiness
  • Peace
  • Confidence
  • Money

It can be anything that you desire. And you have the power to create abundance in your life. Here are a few exercises that can help. Try them and see for yourself the difference they can make in your life—increasing happiness and making life more enjoyable.

Exercise #1: Growing Confidence

If you believe in yourself and your own personal power, you can accomplish anything. Try this easy mind game to build self-esteem:

  • When you begin your day, think of a particular color to bring into your life.
  • Throughout your day, pay close attention to all the ways the universe provides this spectacle.
  • At the end of the day, write down your experience. What, in particular, surprised you?

This game may seem extremely simple, but when you see the power you have at bringing color into your life, you begin to understand other things you have the power to manifest.

Exercise #2: Role-playing

Growing up and losing your sense of imagination can stifle the manifestations of your true desires. Set aside your “adult” ways of thinking and choose a character that strikes you as having an abundance of what you desire. This character can be from:

  • Literature
  • TV
  • History
  • Mythology

Now, take on the mindset of that character. Here’s how:

  1. Decide on one or two characters who resonate with you.
  2. While reading their stories or watching them on the screen, become them. Tell yourself that IS your story, that IS you. Your role is to become the role they play, just like an actor.
  3. Pay attention to your energy level in these moments. How do you feel?
  4. Consider buying something that represents that character.
  5. Notice how you begin to view yourself and how others treat you. See if you begin to create abundance in what you desire.

Exercise #3: Write Yourself a Check

Visualization is a powerful technique for creating abundance. Making a physical reminder of your goal can help. Before he was famous, Jim Carrey wrote himself a check for $10 million for “acting services rendered.” He kept the check in his wallet for five years until he found out he was going to make $10 million on his movie, Dumb and Dumber. In part, by visualizing his success, he became successful.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Write a check to yourself. Include what services you are going to provide to receive this payment. Remember to let go of limiting thoughts on what it takes to receive the amount. You might not have to work as much as you think for such rewards, but action is required.
  2. Each day, set aside at least 30 minutes to do some “work” for this payment. Experience the energy and happiness behind the action. Go back to your “role play” with the belief that it’s already who you are.
  3. Fun Alternative:Include a friend. Write your friend a check as if you were the source and vice versa.

Exercise #4: Re-envision Your Vision Board

You may already have a vision board. If so, buy some darts. Yes, your beautiful vision board is going to become a dart board.

This is a game that builds the mind’s accuracy and precision. Whatever your major goal is for the week, throw darts at that photo or area on the board. Keep your eye on the target, aim, and try to hit it. This may take a little practice, but so does creating abundance. This game helps give direction to your attention and energy.

Exercise #5: Meditate on Abundance

Meditate on abundance for 20 minutes, once a day. Envision the area in your life where you want abundance. You can adapt a guided meditation or use one of the following mantras:

  • I am open to receive gifts from the universe.
  • The river of abundance flows toward me.
  • I am wealthy.
  • I am happy.

You can use any sentence or words you wish. Whatever you feel you are looking for the most in that moment, insert the words that fulfill those desires. Be sure to keep it positive. For example, using a mantra that says “I am not broke” holds less power than “I am wealthy.”
As you bring these practices into your life, you can create abundance in the area of your choosing. Remember, your journey is about enjoyment, laughter, love, and experiences. When you bring these aspects in, your power to create increases. Have fun with it and get some of your “tribe” involved so you can share the excitement that is sure to follow these mind workouts.

1. Thinking Big vs Thinking Small

Those with an abundant mindset are renowned for thinking big, it is part of their DNA. Scarcity mindset creates limitations in the mind which prevents the creation of audacious goals.

2. Plenty vs Lack

Those with an abundant mentality believe there is plenty of everything in the world from resources, love, relationships, wealth and opportunities. They believe they can afford what they want in life and say exactly that : ‘I can afford that. ‘

Those with a lack mentality prefer to believe that there is limited opportunities, resources, relationships, love and wealth. They consistently say: ‘I cannot afford that...’. Saying that statement every day reinforces the belief and forms that exact pattern in the life as reality.

As Tony Robbins explains: ‘You never get beyond scarcity, you have to start beyond it’.

3. Happiness vs Resentment

Someone with an abundant mentality is an optimist and is genuinely happy for others when they achieve success. Conversely, those with a scarcity mindset are competitive and resent other’s success.

4. Embracing Change vs Fear Of Change

A person with an abundant mindset understands that change is an integral part of life, They embrace and accept change. Appreciating the fact that change often leads to more positive outcomes, even if change is somewhat challenging or difficult to navigate.

6. Learning vs Knowing It All

An abundance mentality craves learning and growth. They have a never ending thirst for knowledge and developing new skills whereas scarcity mindset believe they know everything thereby severely limiting their learning and growth.

7. What Is Working vs What Is Not Working

A person with a scarcity mindset selects negative thoughts and adopts a victim mentality.

The strong emotions they experience on a daily basis creates stress in the body with the range of emotions shifting from anxiety, fear, worry, anger and resentment. Their negative emotions, thoughts and beliefs create illnesses in the body leading to general poor health. Their daily focus is on ‘What is not working’.

Those with an abundance mindset are often visionaries and see the limitless possibilities in the world. Their focus in daily life is on ‘What is working’.

The path you have traveled thus far is not set in stone, such is the beauty of life you can change. Deciding to change paths is the first step.

Life is short, live large, believe in the endless possibilities life has to offer and choose to live an abundant life creating memorable moments you can cherish forever.

I would like to share with you five traits of an abundance mindset.

Anything that you want to create in your life starts in your mind. The way that you think determines how you live. The two most powerful words that you can say are, “I am”, because what you say after it shapes your reality.

Choose wisely. Your thoughts are powerful. Unfortunately too many people operate from a scarcity mindset.

Have you ever experienced that voice inside of your head that tells you, “I can only have this much”, “I don’t deserve wealth”, “I’ll never be successful.”

These beliefs are disempowering and only serve to keep you in a place of limitation and deprivation. The good news is that you have the power to change your life.

Stephen Covey first coined the term ‘scarcity mindset’ in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and described it as the zero-sum paradigm of life. People who adopt this perspective don’t take responsibility for their lives.

They are dabblers; short-term thinkers who stay at the surface, give up at the first sign of a challenge, and never fully commit to anything. They complain about not having enough time, money, energy, or resources to achieve their goals. Limiting beliefs run their lives. As a result, they never grow and achieve success.

Conversely, people with an abundance mindset focus on possibilities and what is working. They view failure as an opportunity to grow and learn about themselves and the world. They are masters; they focus on the long-term, are committed to everything that they do.

Most importantly, they are humble. They believe that sharing knowledge, providing value, and supporting others’ growth is important to living a life of service.

Which modality of thinking do you live by?

If you are living with a scarcity mindset or want to learn how to attract a greater amount of abundance into your life, below are five traits of an abundance mindset:

1. View Failure As An Opportunity

People with an abundance mentality view a missed opportunity or failure in life as a stepping-stone to greater knowledge and success. When they fail, they bounce back. In the words of Winston Churchill, “Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”

Failure is what builds resilience. If you want to achieve success in life, you need to embrace failure. Don’t view it as a deficit, but rather a lesson that teaches you more about who you are and what you are capable of.

2. Be Proactive, Not Reactive

If you want to attract abundance into your life, it is important that you learn how to master your mind and emotions. Reactive people adopt a victim mentality, and believe that their lives are run by external factors. People who adopt an abundance mindset consciously create their realities.

They only concern themselves with what they are able to control and change. Take charge of your life. The only thing that you have control over is YOU. Don’t react to life, but rather respond to it with an open mind. You are a product of the decisions you make today.

3. Embrace Optimism

If you want to achieve anything in life you need to maintain an optimistic belief that your desires will be satisfied. An optimistic and positive attitude is precursor to a life of happiness, fulfilment, and gratitude. Martin Seligman defines optimism as, “reacting to problems with a sense of confidence and high personal ability.”

Specifically, optimistic people believe that negative events are temporary, limited in scope, and manageable. “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Your attitude is everything. No matter what happens in life, if you view challenges from a positive lens, there is nothing that will stand in your way of success.

4. Be Mindful of Your Company

Always remember that your vibe attracts your tribe. Your environment has a powerful effect on your behaviour. If you want to live an abundant life, it is important that you surround yourself with people who ascribe to the same philosophy of thinking as you.

Jim Rohn once said that, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Are the people in your life bringing you in alignment with your true self? Do they possess an abundance mindset?

Surround yourself with people who bring abundance, joy, and happiness into your life so that you can become the best version of yourself.

5. Don’t Compare Yourself To Others

When you compare yourself to others, it takes the focus away from the massive amount of abundance that already exists inside of you. “When you doubt your power, you give power to your doubt.”

Nobody is YOU, and that is your power. Don’t come from a place of scarcity, but rather make a choice to live from a place of abundance. Practice gratitude every day and know that you are exactly where you need to be.

In the words of Peter Diamandis, “Creating abundance is not about creating a life of luxury for everybody on this planet; it’s about creating a life of possibility.”

Many people go through life without thinking about their mindset. You may be held back by negativity without even realizing it. If you recognize these signs, you may already be on your way toward an attitude of gratitude and abundance .

  • You celebrate others’ success . An abundance mindset is the opposite of jealousy and fear. You believe that others’ successes don’t detract from your own and that you will be just as successful. You genuinely celebrate the success of others who achieve their goals.
  • You give back . People in a scarcity mindset are too busy taking to give back . If you volunteer your time, energy or skills, often give away your possessions or enjoy taking care of your loved ones, you’re on your way to having an abundance mindset.
  • You live in the present . When you focus on gratitude and abundance , you’re not worried about the future or stuck in the past . You know that the only thing that’s guaranteed is the present, and you focus on taking it all in.

It’s natural for many people to operate in a scarcity mindset, especially in the corporate world and other competitive environments. But when you learn how to develop an abundance mindset , you’ll open opportunities you never thought possible.

Examine your limiting beliefs

Limiting beliefs are unconscious beliefs we hold about ourselves and the world which we allow to prevent us from enjoying our lives to the fullest. For example, if you have an unconscious belief that you do not deserve happiness, understanding how to express gratitude will not come easily, even under the best of circumstances.

As you embrace the process of cultivating gratitude in your life, keep watch for the limiting beliefs you unconsciously hold and examine how they are preventing you from reaching your full potential. Beginning the hard work of replacing your limiting beliefs with an abundance mindset will reveal how your beliefs impact almost every area of life. This is because our beliefs grow from a combination of life experiences: our knowledge base, our environment (past and present), positive and traumatic life events, results of our past actions and how we envision our future.

Adopt more empowering beliefs

Because our beliefs are multi-faceted, unravelling their origin can be a challenge . R eplacing them with healthier beliefs can be even more difficult. However, if existing beliefs are an impediment to the attitude of gratitude you’re committed to developing, it’ll be well worth your time to put in the effort.

To overcome your self-sabotaging beliefs, put yourself in a positive mindset by making a list of things you’re thankful for. Then practice flipping your limiting beliefs to empowering ones. As you uncover each limiting belief, ask yourself: Does this belief take me further along the pursuit of gratitude, or does this belief hold me back? With practice and diligence, you’ll find that adopting an abundance mindset and attitude of gratitude becomes more natural.

Embrace change

Life will never go as planned. There will always be undesirable surprises. Change is inevitable, and we must learn to embrace change . The potential for transformation is present in every change life throws our way, whether or not we choose to embrace it.

Rather than be derailed by unexpected changes in our lives, we must learn to approach change with curiosity. Begin practicing an attitude of gratitude by “softening” to change, letting it in without a fight. Rather than telling yourself that you have either lost something, have less of something or will never have what it is you want, make the command decision to focus on adopting an abundance mindset and focusing on what you can be grateful for. By learning how to express gratitude under difficult circumstances, you build an abundance mindset into everything you do.

So what is an abundance mindset , after all? It doesn’t mean you are repressing your emotions or living in a state of denial. It means you are making the overarching decision to live in a beautiful state every single day, no matter what happens. Because if the only time you are happy is when things are going your way, you’re not going to be happy very often. And the more you start to make these subtle shifts, the more you can cultivate an abundance mindset , the more you will begin to experience joy – and, eventually, create a new emotional home.

How to create an abundance mentality

Developing an abundance mentality is one of the most powerful ways to succeed in life. If you haven’t heard of this before, then you are missing out on golden opportunities to make something of your life.

Read on to learn how to develop the abundance mentality.

Step 1: Dream Big.

When you sit down with yourself to create a list of goals and ambitions, don’t try scaling them down just because you think they’re larger than life. Dreams are supposed to be that way.

Just because your parents are contented with their lives doesn’t mean that you have to be satisfied with yours as well.

The bigger you dream, the more determined you are to work towards achieving it. And the more passionate you work, the more open you are to receive abundance and prosperity.

Step 2: Be Positive.

Having an abundance mentality means adopting a positive attitude. Nothing should get you down easily. When someone tells you that you can’t do something, tell yourself that you can and you will.

Feed that fire inside of you and treat every obstacle as an opportunity to become a better person. With this kind of thinking, you are successfully inviting and manifesting prosperity into your life.

Step 3: Learn To Ask.

Having an abundance mentality also means knowing how to ask for things. While the universe has a way of knowing what you want, it’s not the same as asking the universe for what you want.

When you ask (whether in prayer, writing or mantra), you are formally claiming your right to achieve and receive something. Once you ask, that’s when things will start moving in your direction.

Step 4: Sit Back And Relax.

Knowing that abundance is on its way to your doorstep, take the time to relax. The blessings you are asking for will be given to you.

Be grateful, for you know that you are to receive exactly what you asked for and maybe more. Fidgeting around will not be of any help to you.

Step 5: Be Generous.

Do you believe in karma? The abundance mentality does have something to do with it as well. When you do something nice for others, prosperity will always find its way back to you.

Just a simple gesture of friendliness, for example, can go a long way. Life has a way of getting back at you. Now whether it comes back positively or negatively is up to you.

Having the abundance mentality is extremely important. Anyone can do this. It doesn’t matter whether you are currently rich or poor, strong or weak. If you put your mind to sit, prosperity and abundance will surely follow.

For as long as I can remember I always feared not having enough. It was like I could never get enough to make me feel full. I dreaded the empty, anxious feeling that would arise when the circumstances of my world didn’t make me feel the way I wanted them to. So, I did whatever I could to avoid it. I worked harder, strived and achieved in the hope that getting more would ease my inner ache.

I know I am not alone in this lack mentality. This nagging feeling of not enough. It plays out in our relationships with money, in our career’s, with our partners and within ourselves.

This mentality drives us to be mass consumers and excessive do-ers. We find ourselves on an endless treadmill of seeking. Seeking more love, more money, more recognition, more stuff . But we still feel empty .

There is this constant inner feeling, gnawing at you. You try to avoid it. Sometimes you can. But then something will happen – your bank account drops, that guy doesn’t text you back, you put on a few kilos and then all of the sudden you are writhing in anxiety.

Symptoms Of A Lack Mentality

The lack mentality is a constant feeling of not enough.

While many of us see this as an external problem, I believe it stems from something deeper. It’s root cause is the underlying fear that I am not enough.

Most of us don’t want to face up to that feeling so we will keep our focus outside of ourselves, trying to make it go away by doing and getting more.

The not enough mentality seems to always be thinking about what is missing. Our mind is consumed with thoughts of what I don’t have, why I am not enough, what I did wrong, where I am not feeling what I want, how I am not where I want to be, what isn’t here. And the list goes on…

We find ourselves fixated on this way of thinking. Going round in circles in our mind. Obsessing. And the more we focus on what we don’t have, the more we experience the lack of it, so it becomes this perpetual cycle.

We may at different points in our life, receive what we are seeking and feel that temporary hit of satisfaction. But this doesn’t solve the underlying problem.

No matter how much money we have, it never feels like enough to ease the anxiety. No matter how much love we receive it doesn’t mask that deep insecurity. No matter how much success we achieve, it doesn’t soothe that voice in our head that makes us feel that we are inadequate.

So, how can we flip this? How can we break the cycle of emptiness and learn how to fill ourselves up without needing more money, more love or more stuff?

1. Get Honest And Call Out Your Crap

The first part is always the most confronting.

If you want to get to the root cause of what is creating this pattern, you have to do some inner detective work.

Sit down with a pen and paper and reflect on each area of your life externally, as well as how you feel on the inside. Where in your external world do you feel you don’t have enough? What are you not getting enough of? And now, look inside. Where do you feel not enough? What parts of yourself have you judged as not being good enough?

2. What Are You Really Seeking?

Ok, now time to check in with how you want to feel.

How do you think getting this stuff will make you feel?

If you had the money, the devoted partner, the promotion, the nicer house, the slimmer body, your parents approval, how do you think you would feel? Start to get clear on what you are really seeking here. You may think you are seeking one particular thing, but ultimately you want that thing so you can feel a certain way.

3. Fill Yourself Up

Once you can see what you want to feel, this is your chance to do the work. The real work.

I am going to encourage you to stop looking to the external world to fill you up and instead learn how to do it for yourself.

How do you want to feel? Loved, appreciated, successful, happy, at peace, relaxed? And how have you been looking to the external world (eg: your job, your friends, your partner, your bank account etc…) to make you feel that way.

This might be tough initially, but begin to think about how you can start to experience those feelings now, without needing anything outside you to change. What shifts can you make to how you think, what you focus on, your lifestyle and your actions, so that you can experience more of the feelings you crave?

4. Appreciate What You Have Got

A lack mindset focuses on what it doesn’t have, while an abundance mindset focuses on what it does have.

Look at your list of feelings and notice where you are already experiencing this in your life – no matter how fleeting. Acknowledge where you are already so blessed to be experiencing this. Where else do you already have what you want? What do you see around you that you love? What wonderful people, experiences or manifestations do you already have?

People with an abundance mentality are grateful for what they have in the bank now, rather than noticing how there is not enough. They are grateful for what their partner gives, rather than always asking for more. They focus on what is perfect and beautiful about their body, rather than nit picking over their flaws.

5. Decide For It To Be Enough

What has your mind told you that you need in order to feel enough? What is the target that you have to reach for you to feel enough? The funny thing is that when I ask my clients in our sessions – ‘How would you know you were enough?’ – they can never tell me.

This is because the lack mentality will never (and I repeat never) allow you to feel enough. In fact, it will do whatever it can to ensure you feel the exact opposite.

At the end of the day, you can choose what enough is. So why not choose to let yourself and your life be enough, right now, just as it is? Drop the crazy expectations, the high standards and the unrealistic goals. Love yourself just as you are right now. Be grateful for your life, just as it is now. Let it all be enough.

This doesn’t mean you give up on your desires. But you will notice the more you love and appreciate what you have and the more you feel full and abundant now, the more you will attract opportunities, people and experience that make you feel even more of it.

One of my favorite quotes is, “The mind is everything, what you think, you become.” It is so true. Mindset is a critical component of success in business, sports and life in general. There is also quantitative research to back this up. Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck examined mindsets among young students. She found that children who have a growth mindset that intelligence can be developed are better able to overcome academic challenges than those who have a fixed mindset that intelligence is predetermined. Another study on middle-aged adults, completed by researchers at Yale and Miami, revealed that those with more positive beliefs around aging lived 7.5 years longer than those with less positive self-perceptions of aging. So basically, your mindset can prolong your life!

Another way of looking at this phenomenon is in terms of a scarcity mentality versus an abundance mindset. Stephen Covey initially coined these terms in his best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Scarcity mentality refers to people seeing life as a finite pie, so that if one person takes a big piece, that leaves less for everyone else. Most people, particularly in the corporate world, have been conditioned to have a scarcity mentality. It’s no wonder when promotions and raises are scarce, resources are limited, managers hoard information, micromanagement abounds, and generally, short-term thinking is the norm. A scarcity mentality is what keeps many of us from achieving our goals. An abundance mindset refers to the paradigm that there is plenty out there for everybody.

The next question is, how can we make the shift from a scarcity to an abundance mindset?

1.) Focus on what you have

If you’ve been thinking about a career change but haven’t taken the leap, you’re probably having thoughts like, “There aren’t enough good jobs out there,” “I don’t have enough transferrable skills,” or “Who am I kidding, there’s too much competition.” These are all ideas based on scarcity, what you don’t have. A scarcity mentality sees limitations instead of opportunities. Instead, turn those around to thoughts like, “Wow, I have 25 years of marketing experience, which will be a huge asset if I decide to start a business” or “Over the last ten years, I’ve made great contacts which will be essential when I start networking for my next job.” If you’ve just been laid off, instead of wallowing in self-pity, think about how great it is to finally have the time (and maybe the money if you received a severance package) to think about what you REALLY want to do with the rest of your life.

Deb Knupp: A solid reinforcement on that line to that end, and you know, as you’re looking at ahead and, as you’ve soberly reminded us, we all need to be sober right now around the fear and anxiety. And that there is going to be a time horizon out into the future.

And the human condition – I think when we’re feeling afraid or anxious, we go into this scarcity mindset and try to hold on to what we have. We going to see you and shame and blame. Those things are very human conditions for self-protection. And what I would ask is, how would you guide us and how would you see that when leaders say, in spite of that recognition of our humanity. I still choose an abundance mindset is still operate despite my fear and anxiety, I had the courage to step in. What closing advice or guidance would you tell us, for those who seem to be effective at choosing abundance?

Lisa Slayton: Yeah, it’s a great question. It is easy to get into that, you know, sort of fortification mindset, right? I’ll just put sandbags around my bunker, and we’ll get through this. And I think you have to do some of that. I think effective leaders are working on contingency planning, and stopping the bleeding, and preparing for hard decisions, and tightening where they can tighten. All of that is necessary, but the exceptional leader, I think, is also thinking about how they move to a place of caring and service.

I was on the phone at the end of last week with a business owner who runs a very interesting business outside of Denver. And I won’t go into all the details of it, but part of his platform, is a benefits platform that employers can buy into that provides resources for financial gaps that employees might have so that they don’t have to tap into their 401K and all that.

It’s a really interesting business model he’s developed. But part of their platform is a benevolence platform right so if there’s someone in the organization who is going through a hard time they can begin to take donations from other employees or from outside the organization and then direct those monies to a particular person. They can just create a general benevolence fund and then as needs arise, they can begin to move resources to people.

He told me there was one family in this particular company that had an immediate need. Based on their circumstances and within seven hours the platform was up and they raised $2500 for this family boom. This is the power of the kind of technology that we have available to us. He’s working with a group of churches pastors who have come together in the Denver Metro area to say.

You know, how do we begin to create a pool of resources for people in our congregations, who are going to be struggling, who are going to be out of work and all of that. I love that. It’s that we all can do something right. We all have the ability to do something and I think in this time, leaders can create space for that and opportunities for that. It’s part of that human connection that we feel. Like we’re still, you know, valuable and useful. I can put 10 bucks in a pot. My circumstances are not so dire that I can’t contribute in some small way.

And creating opportunities. I have a friend who runs the training camp for the Pittsburgh Pirates in Florida. Obviously, the training camps shut down, but they partnered with a local restaurant and made the decision that they were going to provide meals for frontline workers. So, you know, I saw pictures posted of Jeff and his team delivering 1500 pizzas one afternoon. In a drive by situation, they kept a local restaurant in business. I mean, multiple levels of service, right. That’s an abundance mentality. It’s what can we do in a positive way that’s going to contribute immediately.

You know, if you really scan the landscape, you can see all kinds of stories like that emerging businesses donated businesses making adjustments. There are all kinds of technology platforms being leveraged. A woman who is on the board for the community hospital system near here, set up a website and you can go in and sign up for meals and pay a certain amount. It deletes the administrative part and they can choose from a variety of restaurants. Snacks get delivered and all that kind of stuff to the hospital workers and the frontline workers. So I think there are a lot of ways to choose abundance and this does create a sense of community and belonging – a desire for the for each of us at the very core of who we are.

It is a place where we can be accepted and we can belong and we can contribute and so we all have the ability to do that in some way and the most exceptional leaders are going to be creating spaces and opportunities for that, even in the midst of difficult times.

Abundance mentality in dating is the belief that there are heaps of women to go around. The world is a veritable smorgasbord for your greedy and lustful ways. There are so many options that you refuse to allow attachment to one. This creates a neediness deficit that chicks dig. It’s the glorious opposite of, “Scarcity Mentality.”

In my city I have a favourite cafe to sit, muse, read and write. On my way there I pass the women: on the street, at the bus stop; walking their dogs, window shopping, stuffing themselves with cake and tea, tossing frisbees. They’re everywhere, man! And all I have to do is saunter up and say something simple like, “Hi. I’m Tony.” (If I don’t have anything better.)

They don’t always receive my affectations well…but who cares? There are more women on the next street corner. Some lonely damsel is waiting to meet a guy like me. Does that make me a jerk? Playing the numbers game? Maybe, I don’t know. Don’t really care. Abundance means there are people who think the same way as me – like the readers of this blog. As for the haters…whatevs man. Haters gonna hate. I’m living life and it’s great.

When you put your mind to it you can have a date every day of the week. Life is beautiful like that. Strap in to your new paradigm like a Russian space monkey with a fistfull of banana flavoured phone numbers.

Abundance mentality is a golden trait. It mesmerizes, inspires and charms. It manifests in the things you say and do – even the way you walk (Think Snoop Dogg, err, Lion, or any of your heroes). You can’t take your eyes off them, the golden boys. They have what they want, and it shows.

Abundant men, what do they look like? Act like?

Well they’re generous, and funny, and brave yet humble. They’re not stupid but they’ll take the bullet if they must. For friendship or love of man.

Even when better looking, higher status men are trying to yank their girls away, they don’t care. And that’s why their women stick with them. They have real social and sexual value and know it.

Abundant men don’t lose friends by fighting over women, because they can attract more. Instead of getting into a fight over something petty, like a pretty girl at a party, they’ll step aside and give their friends a shot. There will always be more women. And most men don’t have the game anyway. The women always return to the abundant man. He’s the king.

How can you be abundant if you’re a newbie? As a newbie you would love to meet a girl, any decent girl, and you’re not abundant at all. You’re in full scarcity or you wouldn’t be here reading this blog, right? If a girl would just give you a shot, you’d have abundance, but they won’t! I need abundance! I need abundance!

I get it. Here’s what you can do…

Self – Aware

Be aware of the concept of abundance mentality. Just by reading this article you’ve already swallowed the pill.

The second step: Fake it. Pretend you’re abundant. Walk like it, talk like it, feel like it. If you fake it long enough…you will become it.

The science behind “Fake it till you make it” is real. What you’re actually doing when you’re “faking it” is mimicking (also known as modeling) an image of what you consider to be success. Modeling successful role models is one of the fastest ways to improve.

Neediness, scarcity and jealousy.

The next time you’re in a social situation and you feel those three emotions, check yourself: “Is this how someone with abundance mentality would act?” If the answer is no, then don’t act that way. Cut that behaviour from your life like a bad addiction.

What about, “real,” abundance?” The kind you don’t need to fake?

Real abundance will come with life experience, and nothing else.

When I was younger I went two years without a date. I couldn’t be more scarce. But once I started acting abundant (and approaching a crap load of girls) I adapted the characteristics of abundance. Then after a lot of life experience, I actually became abundant. It took many years. Honestly, I’m still working on it. Nobody is perfect. Nobody.

Looking back, I wanted it so bad, it was impossible to hide my neediness. It was seeping from my pores. The girls could smell my desperation but I went on anyway, pretending, faking. What choice did I have? Quit? Forget it. Abundance was my goal.

Now seven years later I pass by many women that would love to be my girlfriend. I’ve had enough sex to write several pornographic novels. I don’t need to validate myself at women’s expense. If a girl isn’t completely down for me, I lazily move on. Back then I would jump through flaming fire hoops to get a date with a hottie.

I gave up going after many numbers of women and instead focus on quality of women. And I don’t just mean their physical appearance, but their maturity, intellect, sense of humour and shared interests. Sometimes I would rather read a book or go for a hike than approach women. And when I do approach them it goes very well, because there isn’t a hint of neediness in my voice, in my eyes, in my walk, and they know. This sort of guy is so rare; a man who is self validating, on his own path and free of scarcity.

But I’m in scarcity Tony!

I know. But don’t fret, this is a good thing. The greatness of scarcity is that it creates desire. And without desire you wouldn’t be motivated to step up and change your life, right? Ambition is very attractive, even if it’s ambition to bring more sex and love into your life.

The first step is to go out and meet more people. Gather as many contacts and dates as you can. This might take months, or years even. But that is the price you’ll have to pay for abundance. So in a way, that’s a paradox. You want something so that you can eventually want nothing, but you should want nothing while taking action

Does your head hurt? It shouldn’t.

Here’s the trick:

Don’t think. Just do.

Don’t think. Just do.

When you are out hitting on girls, don’t think about what to say, what to do next – Just do. Have a good time, approach the girls, stay in the interaction as long as you can, and try for the phone number, or make out, or whatever you feel like. But don’t over analyze the interaction while you are in it. Just be in it, if that makes sense. Just be in it. Just do.

Trust the process. Believe in yourself and take action. And here’s the truth:

You are already abundant. You’re already good enough. You’re already rich.

There’s no way to go for a Win in our own lives if we don’t even know, in a deep sense, what constitutes a Win — what is, in fact, harmonious with our innermost values.

And if we can’t make and keep commitments to ourselves as well as to others, our commitments become meaningless.

We know it; others know it.

They sense duplicity and become guarded.

There’s no foundation of trust and Win/Win becomes an ineffective superficial technique.

Integrity is the cornerstone in the foundation.”

2. Maturity

Maturity is the second trait. It’s our ability to balance our convictions with the convictions of others. It’s also our ability to take a long-term view and focus on increasing the standard of living and quality of life for all stakeholders.

“Maturity is the balance between courage and consideration. If a person can express his feelings and convictions with courage balanced with consideration for the feelings and convictions of another person, he is mature, particularly if the issue is very important to both parties.

If you examine many of the psychological tests used for hiring, promoting, and training purposes, you will find that they are designed to evaluate this kind of maturity.

Whether it’s called the ego strength/empathy balance, or the self confidence/respect for others balance, the concern for people/concern for tasks balance, ‘I’m okay, you’re okay’ in transactional analysis language, or 9.1, 1.1, 5.5, 9.9, in management grid language — the quality sought for is the balance of what I call courage and consideration.

Respect for this quality is deeply ingrained in the theory of human interaction, management, and leadership.

It is a deep embodiment of the P/PC balance. While courage may focus on getting the golden egg, consideration deals with the long-term welfare of of the other stakeholders.

The basic task of the leadership is to increase the standard of living and the quality of life for all stakeholders.”

3. Abundance Mentality

With a Scarcity Mentality, we operate from our Lizard Brain or in Fight-or-Flight mode. This leads to turf wars and bad behaviors.

The Abundance Mentality helps us operate at a higher-level.

We believe there’s enough for everybody, and we take it as a challenge to figure out how to make that so.

“The third character trait essential to Win/Win is the Abundance Mentality, the paradigm that there is plenty out there for everybody.

Most people are deeply scripted in what I call the Scarcity Mentality. They see life as having only so much, as though there were only one pie out there. And if someone were to get a big piece of the pie, it would mean less for everybody else. The Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life.

People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production. They also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the successes of other people – even, and sometimes especially, members of their own family or close friends and associates. It’s almost as if something is being taken from them when someone else receives special recognition of or windfall gain or has remarkable success or achievement.”

The Abundance Mentality, on the other hand, flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security.

It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making. It opens possibilities, options, alternatives, and creativity.

The Abundance Mentality takes the personal joy, satisfaction and fulfillment of Habits 1, 2, and 3 and turns it outward appreciating the uniqueness, the inner direction, the proactive nature of others. It recognizes the unlimited possibilities for positive interactive growth and development, creating new Third Alternatives.”

How to create an abundance mentality

There is a HUGE difference between an abundance mindset vs. scarcity mindset. The path that your life takes depends, in part, on the mindset that you adopt. You can choose to either view the world as abundant or scarce, but they cannot co-exist.

The abundance mindset flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is a paradigm that is grounded in the belief that ‘there is more than enough’ for everyone. Alternatively, a scarcity mindset is the belief that there will never be enough, resulting in feelings of fear, stress, and anxiety.

In his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change, Stephen Covey explains that when you live in a world of scarcity, you compete for available resources, even when there is an abundance of them. What type of mindset do you ascribe to? One mindset will imprison you, while the other one will set you free.

I am a firm believer that if you choose to adopt a character that is rich in abundance, you will become a master of your life. The beauty of life is that at any given moment, you have the power to change your life. If you choose to make the mental shift, from a place of scarcity to one of abundance, you will transform your entire life.

I am living proof that this works. Years ago I possessed a scarcity mindset and it negatively impacted me on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level. Once I made the decision to change my mindset, and walk the path of abundance, great things started happening.

I’ve observed a lot of people in my work and in my life that are consumed by a scarcity mindset, so much so that it holds them back from living to their full potential. In particular, I see a lot of examples of people that have incredible external abundance, but that live in a state of fear.

They have a lose-win mindset, which says that, ‘there is only so much pie to go around, and if you get some, there will be less for me.’ Adopting this mode of thinking only results in a life of fear, stress, and anxiety.

Below are 3 differences of an abundance vs. scarcity mindset:

Take a Risk vs. Play it Safe

Those with an abundance mindset understand that in order to grow, you need to get out of your comfort zone and take a risk in order to achieve their goals. They welcome change and see it as an opportunity to grow and expand. Those with a scarcity mindset are fret by fear. They think small and avoid risk at all costs.

Plenty vs. Deficit

A person with an abundance mindset believes that there is always more of everything in life, whether that’s money, relationships, resources, opportunities, etc. Alternatively, someone with a scarcity mentality lives in fear that they are going to lose their time or money. Because they believe that there will never be enough, they are in constant competition to ‘stay on top’.

Positive vs. Negative

A person with an abundance mindset focuses on the limitless possibilities that exist in life. They choose to think in positive terms about everything that happens in life, good or bad. As a result of this way of thinking, they attract amazing experiences and opportunities into their lives. Alternatively, someone with a scarcity mindset always dwells on what isn’t working in his/her life. They adopt a victim mentality and blame others for their failures, instead of taking responsibility for their actions.

These are some of the differences between an abundance vs. scarcity mindset. Do you think you are suffering from a place of scarcity or abundance? If you are living from a scarcity mindset it’s time to make a shift. How? Start with your beliefs. Focus on giving more, whether that’s your money, your time, or your love.

For example, one of my rituals involves giving. I do a lot of philanthropy work that inspires me to live from a place of abundance every day. The more that you give, the more you will receive. Another option is to take a leap of faith and hire a coach, find a mentor, or attend a seminar or event that will inspire you to change your mindset.

Allow for more abundance to flow into your life. If you do so, the end result will be life mastery. William James said it best – “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.” When you adopt an abundance mindset, your life will change forever.

In reading about minimalism, the last advice I expected to encounter was advice on creating abundance. After all, minimalism is about getting rid of the excess stuff and paring down to what you truly use, need and love. But it turns out, that if you have a scarcity mindset, you are likely to keep an excess of things just in case you might need them one day. If you hang onto an item because you are worried that you might need it someday, that suggests you believe that you may not have the ability or means to acquire it should you really need it in the future—revealing your scarcity mindset. Ah ha!

By cultivating an attitude of abundance, you trust that you can easily attract or acquire what you’ll need in the future. So, it is safe to let this thing go now so someone else can use and benefit from it. This is exactly what happened with our juicer, which we hadn’t used in ages. We donated to charity. Years later, guess what? I need a juicer. I could kick myself for having let the juicer go all those years ago or I could trust in the abundance of the universe and my ability to acquire a new juicer.

Having worked with the laws of attraction for years, I now know that I can easily manifest or attract any of the stuff I need in life. This week my husband and I saw a top-quality juicer for sale in a charity shop window. [ I always prefer shopping in charity shops for a number of reasons: 1) it’s usually cheaper than buying new; 2) it’s better for the environment; and 3) you get to support a charity doing something good in the world. A great deal on so many fronts.] I’ve just started a healthy food challenge for the new year. So, a juicer may come in handy because I’m adding in a super green smoothie for breakfast every morning as an expedient way to get more fruits and veggies into my diet.

Now I’ve proven to myself that, yes, I can let stuff go. And if I need it later, I can attract it. No problem. And, even if I didn’t spot that juicer, we have the means to buy a new one.

How do you learn to feel more abundant and banish that scarcity thinking?

The easiest way is to start by realizing how much you already have. When it feels like you don’t have enough, focus on what you do have. One of the principles of life coaching is that you maintain what you have before you expand. Instead of buying new clothes, mend or alter some of the clothes you already own.

Make a list of everything you are grateful for in life .

You can list anything that comes to mind – your health, wonderful friends, a warm place to live, a comfortable bed, loving family, and so on. Focusing on what you have and being grateful for that is a simple trick to activate the law of attraction. Gratitude is a very attractive quality. If you haven’t taken the time to make your wish list for the new year, then now is the perfect time to do so regardless of whether it is January or July.

Compare Carefully.

Comparison can make you feel inadequate if you compare yourself to someone who has more than you. It can also make you feel incredibly rich and abundant, if you compare yourself to someone who has less. Volunteer to help in a soup kitchen or shelter for the homeless twice a month to remind yourself how lucky you are!

Another trick is to give. When you give, your mentality shifts from scarcity to abundance. Obviously, if you can give something away, you have more than enough and can easily afford to be generous. I find it is easier to part with things if I know they will be going to someone who wants them. Instead of gathering dust in a cupboard, I imagine my juicer was providing health benefits for someone else all these years. And since we donated to Oxfam, that juicer might have provided a chicken or goat for someone in Africa. And that goat might have had babies and now there may be a mini goat farm in Africa thanks to this juicer. I like to spin out the story so that I’m motivated to scout around the house and see what else can be drafted into service and do some good work in the world.

In the journey from maximalist to minimalist, an abundance mentality certainly makes it easier!

How to create an abundance mentality

1. Begin with gratitude.

Always start with thanksgiving; be thankful for what you already have and see the miracles that come from this one simple act.

Next, you’ve got to challenge yourself to produce. Produce more ideas than you need for yourself so you can share and give your ideas away. That is called fruitfulness and abundance—it means working on producing more than you need for yourself so you can begin blessing others, blessing your nation and blessing your enterprise. Once abundance starts to come, once someone becomes incredibly productive, it’s amazing what the numbers turn out to be.

2. Dream it.

Everything begins in the heart and mind. Every great achievement began in the mind of one person. They dared to dream, to believe that it was possible. Take some time to allow yourself to ask, What if? Think big. Don’t let negative thinking discourage you.

You want to be a dreamer. Dream of the possibilities for yourself, your family and for others. If you had a dream that you let grow cold, re-ignite the dream. Fan the flames. Life is too short to let it go.

3. Alter your mindset.

Fulfilled people live in a world of abundance. Others live in a world of limitation.

Some people think there’s not enough to go around in the world. They come from a fear-based mindset. Their answers are “either/or,” but never “both.” In that person’s mindset, they go for security above love, safety before self-expression, and protection over possibility.

But you can learn to understand that with a little creativity, a willingness to be unconventional and an open mind, they can have both. When you build your life on the “Both!” mentality, you will see opportunities that you were once blind to.

What about you? Are you a possibility theorist or a fear-based thinker?

4. Construct an empowering reality.

You’re creating your reality right now. But chances are you’re not being very intentional about the reality that you’re creating. Reality is subjective; if you realize that it’s a construct, if you realize that you are choosing to believe something, then you can choose to believe that you can do something about it.

Write down the beliefs that you have about yourself. On one side, list the things that empower you and move you forward. The things that make you more confident, that give you the courage and the audacity to move forward. On the other side, list the things that demotivate or demean you and move you away from your goals.

You can choose to believe things that empower you, and you can choose to ignore the things that move you backward. It’s all a construct.

5. Stop making excuses.

Eliminating excuses is important because your future is important.

If you only get the future that you work for, then what you work on is pretty important, right? You probably don’t want to screw that up. If there is a list of things to not flub, “your future” has to be high on the list.

Your decisions lead to your destiny. Do you believe that? You should. It’s true. Sooner or later, what you do—and who you really are—determines what you ultimately achieve.

6. Realize your potential.

The wonderful thing about potential is that it can build upon itself. If you can just get the snowball rolling, the energy of motion will take over.

Think for a moment about the people you respect. Why do you admire them? You are probably drawn to them because they are full of realized potential. When we see people exerting this kind of energy, it compels us to draw ourselves closer to them and become a part of what they are doing.

So today you have a choice. Will you sit at the top of the hill merely contemplating your capabilities? Or will you give yourself a little shove and barrel down that hill, knocking over obstacles standing in your way?

7. Attract opportunity.

Opportunities and success are not something you go after necessarily but something you attract by becoming an attractive person.

If you can develop your skills, keep refining all the parts of your character and yourself, your health, your relationships so that you become an attractive person—you’ll attract opportunity. Opportunity will probably seek you out.

8. Commit to living your dreams.

Once you commit to living your dreams, the lids blinding your eyes will be lifted. A completely new world will be opened to your view.

You will notice opportunities that have been in your reach all along, ones your conscious mind simply didn’t pay heed to. The fundamental change taking place is your self-identity. This is the point of no return. Once this shift has happened, your whole world changes.

  • Nothing becomes impossible to you.
  • Your only limitations are your consciousness, which is quickly expanding.
  • Whatever you want quickly becomes yours because you see what most people don’t.
  • Now that you can see it everywhere, you are sprinting.

9. Never be satisfied.

Even after you achieve a goal, you’re not content. For you, it’s not even about the goal. It’s about the climb to see how far you can push yourself.

Does this make you ungrateful? Absolutely not. You’re entirely humbled and grateful for everything in your life. This is why you will never get complacent or lazy.

10. Add value to others.

When you stand on the beach and watch the waves hit the shore, do you think there’s any end to the water? There is, of course, but we can’t comprehend it, so we think seawater is endlessly abundant. You would never deny a bucketful to a child building a sand castle because you can refill that bucket again and again. That’s how the abundance mindset works. You give away praise, recognition, ideas, knowledge and money because you know there’s plenty to go around. What you give away will come back to you a thousand times over.

11. Make the most of the infinite possibilities ahead of you.

Explore the unique, endless possibilities within you. Remember that when you work on improving yourself, you’re adding to the youth, vitality and beauty of your mind.

How I’m Making the Shift from a Scarcity into an Abundance Mindset for My Business

May I share how I’ve been applying the shift in the context of my business.

Over the years, I have been working on letting go of my scarcity mindset. I found out how limiting beliefs were driving the way I was showing up in my business. It wasn’t great that I had unconsciously picked up scarcity thinking from “marketing experts” and I needed to change this.

These days, I remind myself about coming from a space of love and abundance whether I am serving clients or doing marketing. It just doesn’t feel right to be coming from love when I work with clients but when it is time for marketing activities, I use fear-based methods. I’m now leaning into greater authenticity when promoting my offers and I am feeling happier and aligned 🙂

Thanks for the book. Read it early Christmas morning. It was very refreshing and recalled to remembrance a culture I learned implicitly from the life of a dear friend and community pillar.

The mentality is quite counter-cultural, as our western capitalistic mind set is steeped in the philosophies of economics and scarcity where the fundamentals of price equals supply and demand at each individuals self stated utility — what’s in it for me.

All philosophies whether social or monetary tend to be somewhat antichrist-ish, empowered by fear and self centeredness. The abundance mentality is exactly opposite, combating fear of a lack and promoting selfless love.

Thank you, it’s always good to be reminded of the one true reality.

I received this book as a gift, and at first glance (literally judging a book by its cover) I thought this was yet another “Prosperity Gospel” play. I was very pleased to learn that it is NOT.

Instead, what I found was a concise and easy to read – yet compelling story of building relationships through selflessness. It’s presented in an interesting parable which helped me to reflect on my own relationships and how I interact with others at work, out in the world, and at home with my family. More people should read and adopt these principles.

One sure sign of lack mentality is if you are constantly thinking “I am not having this” and “I am not having that.” Thought after thought is about by what is missing in your life. Even if there is a lot of good that is going on, your attention is placed on “not having”.

Then again, a lack mentality does not happen overnight. It is likely the result of past programming. It could be that when you were young, you were penalised for “not having” or “not good enough“. Fear is instilled in children even today.

An article in our local Straits Times on “How can 97 marks be not good enough?” (refer to the photo below that I took) had caught my eye. It was reported that pupils from an elite school were told that they failed to make the selection for the Higher Chinese class. 97 marks was the cut-off. Competition was stiff as spaces were only available to the top 25% of the cohort.

For crying out loud, these children are only 7-8 years old. Well, this is Singapore’s pressure cooker education system for you *grimace*. Where constant, the drumming of “not good enough” or “not having” is going to affect their self-esteem and if not conscious, contribute to creating an unhealthy lack mentality later on in life.

Consequences from The Lack Mentality of Not Having

A lack mentality leads to energy leakage. You feel poor, miserable and stressed-out. It puts you in a state of contraction.

If you are mostly placing attention on “not having”, guess what? By virtue of the law of attraction, you are just going to attract more of “not having”.

A lack mentality cancels out any positive intention or wishes that you sent out to the Universe. The energy behind your doubt is more intense than the energy behind your dream. A lack mentality sabotages the manifestation of your dream. A lack mentality holds you back from success and making more money.

How to Start Overcoming A Lack Mentality

Let’s face it. It would be almost impossible, to get rid of negative thinking completely or instantly. However, what you can do is to learn to redirect your focus. Then again, it is humanly difficult to do this by sheer will power alone if your mind is already ruled by fear.

To aid in the process, it helps to first release the emotional resistance caused by lack. You work on reducing the emotional charge. Once you are able to neutralize your negative emotions, you reprogram your mind with more empowering thoughts.

Overcome Lack Mentality: Expand into Being

It does not serve anyone to hold on to lack and limitation. Ultimately, we need to learn that life is not a constant pursuit of “this” or “that”. An excessive focus on acquisition is synonymous with ego attachment. It is hard to be happy because we will never be satisfied in the here and now. We become needy and clingy, as a result.

Let’s be aware that happiness rests less on our having but more on our being. In fact, it is our beingness that attracts what we want. The way to abundance is Be-Do-Have. Our actions (Do) flow from our Being, so that we can Have what we desire. The lack mentality of Have-Do-Be makes happiness (Being) contingent on the Having.

To Be is to be connected with the soul essence of who we are. In the Being state, we embrace, love and accept ourselves unconditionally. We are in a flow of positive feelings. It is one of pure joy. We are in gratitude, in appreciation and awe; in the soul awareness that we will never fall short. We live in a universe of abundance and the universe of abundance is also in us. We are one.

When life gets tumultuous, it’s easy to lean into a scarcity mindset where you feel like there’s not enough time, money, resources, jobs, and energy to go around. This way of thinking, however, can be problematic because how we perceive things impacts how we experience life. By shifting from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset, we can begin to change our quality of life. Ahead, mindset experts explain the difference between an abundance and scarcity mindset, how an abundance mindset can improve your life, and five ways to begin cultivating an abundance mindset.

“An abundance mindset operates on the foundational belief that there is an infinite amount of something available to you, despite any other circumstances,” says Chrissy Papetti, a self-mastery mentor, success coach, and speaker. “With this mindset, you genuinely believe and trust that there are endless opportunities, time, resources, money, and love that are possible to have. Therefore, others’ gain doesn’t equate to your loss.”

A scarcity mindset, on the other hand, believes the opposite to be true. “Scarcity mindset is the belief that life is drawn from a finite pool of resources,” says Judy Ho, Ph. D., a licensed and triple board-certified clinical and forensic neuropsychologist. “If someone else has more blessings, opportunities, etc., it means there is less for you. People with a scarcity mindset believe that they have to hold on to whatever they have now because it might not come around later.”

Focusing on scarcity and lack can trigger feelings of fear, envy, jealousy, and hopelessness, which may lead you to believe that you can’t change your life experience, says Ho. Papetti adds that living in this fear-induced anxiety, stress, and discomfort can result in missed opportunities and lead to dissatisfaction and compromised well-being.

Conversely, when you embody an abundance mindset by believing there is an unlimited amount of everything available to you, your mind and body feel safe, even if something is taken away or not yet received. “You become more resilient, and your body learns that the anxiety and stress isn’t needed because there is no threat to losing anything when there’s always more ways to gain what you want or need,” says Papetti. “The only thing that’s certain in life is uncertainty, so embodying an abundance mindset that trusts you’ll be safe in the uncertainty is the secret to living a life of greater gratitude, ease, and satisfaction.”

Furthermore, Ho adds that an abundance mindset also helps keep us focused on our big-picture goals and motivates us to produce positive opportunities for ourselves. “[This] leads to you reaching your goals, which in turn builds more self-confidence and more behaviors that create even more positive outcomes for yourself,” says Ho. “Essentially, it’s an upward spiral of positive outcomes.” Yes, please!

5 ways to cultivate an abundance mindset

1. Examine and rewrite your beliefs

A scarcity mindset typically stems from deeply rooted beliefs about yourself and how life works. So shifting from a scarcity to an abundance mindset begins with becoming aware of your beliefs. “When you notice scarcity-related thoughts in your mind or feel fear and anxiety in your body, make a note in your journal or phone about what you’re believing to be true in that moment and if that’s empowering or disempowering you,” says Papetti. “After you practice this enough, you will begin to sense the difference of your beliefs in the moment and can choose differently.”

2. Shift from expectation to detachment

When we really want something such as money, a relationship, or hitting a career milestone, there is a tendency to get attached to the outcome and develop a sense of expectation. Then, if things don’t work out the way you envisioned, as often happens because life is unpredictable, Papetti says that attachment can then lead to feelings of scarcity. The solution? Practice detachment.

“The key to an abundance mindset is becoming detached from any expectations of how, when, and what will happen in the future,” says Papetti. “If you set your intentions for what you authentically want and then detach from the details of how it’ll come to be, you’re infinitely more resilient in navigating what unfolds in your life and, therefore, equipped to find solutions while trusting that it’ll work out for you.”

3. Connect the dots backward

Cultivating an abundance mindset requires a deep sense of trust that there is always more than enough for everyone and then some. However, if you’re not used to flexing your trust muscle, it can be challenging to do. One easy way to strengthen your trust muscle is by connecting the dots backward and finding proof of abundance in your past life experiences.

“It’s likely that you had many situations that didn’t work out as expected, and yet the outcomes led to lessons learned, new directions, more desirable results, or a blessing in disguise that you couldn’t have foreseen from the start,” says Papetti. “Reminding yourself that you were safe (and likely thrived!) when you didn’t get what you wanted, when or how you wanted it, makes it easier to see change as a redirection toward something better rather than a loss of something that’s scarce.”

4. Read inspirational stories

To further stack up the proof of abundance, Ho recommends reading inspirational stories of other people who have overcome adverse circumstances and begin to model their thought patterns and behaviors. “Humans really do benefit so much from social modeling,” says Ho. “When we see others succeed, the neural pathways in our own brains react, and we learn through this observation. So even if you are not in a place right now to believe in yourself to that extent, reading stories of others who do this and asking yourself to remember one thing that they did, which you can also do, is key to translating this into your own life.” This is called social modeling, and to maximize its effectiveness, Ho recommends drawing similarities between you and the people in these stories to cement the belief that if it’s possible for them, it’s possible for you too.

5. Celebrate your own and others’ success

“Becoming envious of others will take away your own opportunities for growth,” says Ho. “Envy is a very limiting emotion and causes us to think about why someone else doesn’t deserve the good things that happen to them.” To combat this, Ho suggests celebrating other people’s successes by congratulating them on achieving their goal and also the effort it took to get there. And, of course, celebrate your wins too. Ho emphasizes the importance of not just celebrating hitting the goal but also toasting yourself every time you take an action step towards it. Celebrating the mini-wins helps cultivate an abundance mindset and ingrains the notion that efforts are worthy of being rewarded just as much as the outcome.
