Creating a WiFi Hotspot Using the Command Prompt.

Procedure For Creating A WiFi Hotspot with CMD

1.Open Command Prompt with Administrator privileges

First, you need to open the command prompt with administrator privileges. Press the “Windows + X” key on your keyboard and select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the pop-up menu.

2.Check If your PC supports hosted network

To create WiFi hotspot, you need to create hosted network by using command prompt. Before creation, you need to check whether your PC and it’s adapter drivers support hosted network or not. When PC supports hosted network, then only you can go further.

Type netsh wlan show drivers in command prompt and press enter. It will display results. You must see Yes near to Hosted network supported. If you see No, you can do nothing. When you see Yes shows that in below screenshot, then continue to next step.

3.Set Hosted network

You need to create WiFi hotspot with Network name and Password. For that you need to set up hosted network and allow it’s access.

Type netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=your-network-name key=your password and press enter.

You need to change only two things in above command.

  • Replaceyour-network-name after ssid= with what ever you want. It is actually network id which you can see in other devices.
  • Replaceyour password after key= with your own password.

Note :- Password must be within 8 to 63 characters length.

4.Turn On WiFi hotspot

You have setup WiFi hot spot in above step. Now you need to turn it ON, to detect it on other devices.

Type netsh wlan start hostednetwork and press enter.

Now you have turned ON WiFi. Immediately you will see a new network connection in your network connections.

5.Share Internet connection

You need to enable sharing option for this connection to use it in other devices.

Go to Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing center -> Change Adapter settings . Here you will see all your connections.

  • Right click on newly created connection.
  • Click Properties.
  • Select Sharing tab.
  • Make sure two options are checked shows that in above screenshot. Other wise check two options and select “Ok”.

Now you can use this WiFi in any other devices.

When you want to turn off WiFi, you need to use netsh wlan stop hostednetwork command.

Database. Oracle, Linux

Start. Click on start button on your desktop or press the Windows Key on keyboard.

Search. Type “cmd” in search box and right click on command prompt. Select Run as Administrator.

For Beginners. You are accessing the Admin privileges so you will be asked for User Account Control. Click on Yes. Now you have command prompt running.

Device Check. Type netsh wlan show drivers in command prompt and press enter.
It will show the output like the image.
In the output Hosted network supported :Yes means that your computer supports hosted networks. Verify this.

Create. Type netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=Hotspotname key=password in Command prompt. This will create a Hotspot but it is currently offline.

Start. Type netsh wlan start hostednetwork in command prompt to start the hotspot you just created.

Stop. Type netsh wlan stop hostednetwork in command prompt to stop the hotspot.

Details. Type netsh wlan show hostednetwork to check the hotspot status.

Internet. To share your internet connection on this hotspot go to the Network and sharing center and click on Change adapter setting. Here right click on the Connection that you use to connect to internet and select properties. In properties go to Sharing tab and check the box “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection and select the network connection name that is used by your hotspot.(For this check the Network Connection Window and look for Connection which says Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter). And save it. Now your inter net connection is shared.

In our case, it will be created from a Windows device connected to the internet using broadband or a dongle connection.     Alternatively, you can use the “interface” parameter to show the list of profiles for a particular wireless adapter:

    When you need to get driver information about your computer’s wireless adapter, you can use the the above command. The result will show the exact drivers being used, the WiFi radios on your PC/laptop alongwith driver version number.

    You can further use this command to check your WiFi capabilities. Type in the following command

    C:\Netsh WLAN show wirelesscapabilities

    The results will show you exactly what your WiFi connection is capable of including WiFi Direct service capabilities.

    3# View wireless adapter settings

    Command > Netsh WLAN show interfaces

    You can see the details of your WiFi interfaces using above command. The results will show you description of the interface, SSID, BSSID, Cipher, authentication type, channel, average receive and transmit rate and radio type.

    If you have multiple WiFi connections saved on your PC, the “Show interfaces” command will display the information for all the wireless adapters on your computer. If you only need to see the information for one adapter, you can use the following command:

    4# Recover your WiFi password from any of the WiFi connection profiles saved on your PC

    If you lost and cannot remember your network security key to connect another device to a particular Wi-Fi access point, you can use the above command to view your WiFi password. You can also use this command to see the data limits if you have set them.

    5# Connecting to a WiFi network using command prompt

    Command > netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=”your WiFi connection name” key=”your WiFi connection password”

    You can use the above command to sign into your WiFi network. The above command is particularly useful if your WiFi settings in Windows 10 is not visible/cannot be connected due to some reasons. The additional commands are C:\netsh wlan start hostednet and C:\netsh wlan stop hostednetwork These two commands will start and stop your WiFi hotspot connection.

    6# Stop your PC connecting automatically to a wireless network out of range

    Command > Netsh WLAN set profileparameter name=”your WiFi connection name” connectionmode=manual

    Normally, you would have configured your Windows 10 PC to connect to different WiFi networks automatically. While this is the best way to connect, sometimes notice that your laptop connects automatically to a WiFi connection that has zero or poor connectivity instead of an available full network WiFi connection. In such a case you can use the above command to prevent your computer from connecting to different networks automatically. If you want to move again to the automatic mode use the following command C:\Netsh WLAN set profileparameter name=” your WiFi connection name” connectionmode=auto

    7# Delete wireless network profile stored on your PC

    Command > Netsh WLAN delete profile name=”the WiFi connection you want to delete”

    When you no longer need to connect to a particular wireless network, the access point is no longer available, or you need to reset the network profile settings, you can also use Netsh WLAN to delete any profile stored on your computer using the above command. If you can’t remember the name of the network profile, you can use the C:\Netsh WLAN show profiles command to list all the available profiles and select the one you want to delete.

    8# Export and import wireless network profiles

    Command > Netsh WLAN export profile key=clear folder=”the folder you want to save this report”

    Sometimes you need to export and import wireless profiles. The above command exports all your wireless network profiles available on your PC. If you want to export a specific WiFi connection profile to a specific location, use this command > C:\Netsh WLAN export profile name=”your WiFi connection name” key=clear folder=”the folder you want to save this report”

    9# Generate a complete report of the wireless adapters on your PC/laptop

    Command > Netsh WLAN show WLANreport

    Trouble shooting WiFi connection problems is very difficult as Internet has lots of conflicting tutorials and troubleshooting guide. Also you should know the exact problem you are facing while connecting to WiFi.

    Using the above command will generate a full detailed WiFi networks report to the following location > C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WLANReport\ WLAN-report-latest.html.

    Once the WLAN report has been created, copy and paste the path into your web browser’s address bar to open the report.

    You can use this report to troubleshoot the problems, ask help on tech forums. The WLAN reports contain a graph with details of the connectivity status, including information, such as when the connection started, when it got disconnected, errors, and more.

    The report also summarizes network adapters information configured on your system, session success/failures, disconnect reasons, and a lot more. It’s a very detailed report that can help you to ping point many Wi-Fi connectivity issues.

    The average user, ie myself, could be confused In step 6 when you indicated that a “yes” means your supported and a “no” doesn’t. We don’t understand what all the other cmd info on that screen means, and in your screen shot, just like how it is on my PC, there are lines of info that say : yes and :no one right about the other.

    Not sure if I should proceed, since I’m not confident in compatibility. EVEN THOUGHT windows 10 has a section in the action center for hot spot, and I’ve made a network name and pass which showed up on other devices but eventually once connected would say “no internet connection”. Assured my Pc is connected at this point :/

    Upon further research it seems the NO when running the compatibility cmd indeed indicated my system is not compatible.

    Obviously not your fault but why does windows add a box in the “action center” for wireless hotspot connects (up to 8), if it’s not supported in my system and there’s no way to upgrade to have the capability included ?

    Before you get started, though, you might want to check if your computer’s Wi-Fi adapter supports this feature, called “hosted network” or “AP mode.” Use the steps here to see if yours will work with either third-party utilities or Windows 10 and above.

    Turn Your Windows PC into a Wi-Fi Hotspot with Connectify

    The easiest way to create a Wi-Fi hotspot with your computer is with freemium software Connectify. You can create a mobile hotspot under Settings, meaning you no longer need to open the Command Prompt or use third-party tools to create a virtual Wi-Fi hotspot on your Windows 10 PC.

    Currently, the mobile hotspot feature supports up to 8 devices, meaning you connect up to eight devices to Windows 10 mobile hotspot. The mobile hotspot feature can be turned on a PC that supports Wi-Fi.

    In addition to users who use Wi-Fi to connect their PCs to the Internet, users who use an Ethernet connection to connect to the web can also set up a mobile hotspot without any issues.

    Thankfully, setting up a mobile hotspot is very easy in Windows 10 Anniversary Update builds. Complete the given below directions to turn on the mobile hotspot or virtual hotspot in Windows 10 without the help of third-party utilities.

    NOTE: This feature is present in Windows 10 Anniversary Update or above builds only. Make sure that you’re running 14379 or later build of Windows 10 by typing Winver.exe in Start menu search box and then pressing Enter key.

    Step 1: Open the Settings app either by clicking its icon on the left side of the Start menu or simultaneously pressing the Windows logo + R keys.

    Step 2: In the Settings app, go to Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot page.

    Step 4: To turn on mobile hotspot, turn on the option labeled Share my Internet connection with other devices. That’s it!

    As you can see in the picture above, Windows 10 automatically assigns a network name as well as a strong password for your mobile hotspot. If you want to change the default password or name of your Windows 10 mobile hotspot, click the Edit button and then a name or password you wish to use.

    Step 5: To connect a device to your Windows 10 mobile hotspot, select your Windows 10 mobile network’s name on the device that you want to connect and then enter the password being shown on the Mobile hotspot page of Settings on your Windows 10 PC.

    By default, Windows 10 automatically turns off the Mobile Hotspot to save power. If you want to keep it turned on always, turn off When no devices are connected, automatically turn off the mobile hotspot option.

    The “netsh” command in the above code line stands for Network Shell, it is a command for networking that allows the user to view and configure all network adapter on your PC in a more detailed way.

    For instance, if “lexam” is one of the Wi-Fi names detected by the computer, you will input “netsh wlan connect name = lexam” in the command prompt.

    Step 4 : Press the Enter key on your keyboard to connect your PC to the Wi-Fi network and you now enjoy free internet on your system.

    Step 5 : If you want to disconnect from the internet, you will type “netsh wlan disconnect” into the command prompt. Also, in case you like to save the Wi-Fi network on your PC, you will type “netsh wlan export profile name = (name of Wi-Fi)” .

    Also, you might want to know the password of a Wi-Fi network to be able to enjoy free internet. You can also do this using the command prompt.

    Step 1 : In the command prompt type “netsh wlan show profiles” . This will show all the Wi-Fi networks that you have connected to in time past, you will have to take note of their names.

    Step 2 : Then, within the command prompt type “ netsh wlan show profile Wi-Fi name key=clear” .

    For instance, if the Wi-Fi router name is “Adrex” for example, the command would be “netsh wlan show profile Adrex key=clear” .

    The command prompt on a Mac Operating System computer is a program called Terminal. The Terminal gives the user access to the Unix part of mac Operating System. To access the Terminal, the user can use different methods; you can either open the Launchpad (a silver icon in the Dock that looks like a rocket found at the bottom of the screen), click on the “other folder” and then click on Terminal or using the “Spotlight icon” (magnifying glass at the upper right corner of the screen).

    Then type terminal into the search box or click on the Finder icon (a two-toned smiling face) in the Dock on the screen’s bottom. Then, click on “Applications” next, “Utilities” and finally double-click on Terminal to open it and type in the following commands in the command line:

    Type “ defaults read/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences|grep SSIDString” into the command line. This would bring a list of the Wi-Fi networks that you have previously connected to.

    Next is to find and display the password of any network that you want to connect to. This can be achieved by typing “$ security find-generic-password -gaWi-Fi name ” | grep “password: i.e. the “Wi-Fi name” here would be replaced by the particular name of the Wi-Fi that you want.

    The password to that Wi-Fi network would be displayed, you can then make use of it to enjoy free internet on your computer.

    Wireless internet connections are far more prevalent than they used to be, but there are still times when you may find that you are stuck using a wired connection and want to use it wirelessly — for instance, at a hotel with only wired internet but you want to get your tablet online.

    Note: we’ve looked at how to turn your laptop into a wireless access point before, but the previous method involved some command line work, whereas what we’re doing today uses a simple GUI application called Virtual Router Plus.

    When Can You Use This?

    If you want to share your internet connection, Virtual Router Plus requires that your computer be connected to a wired network and have a functional wi-fi adapter. If you want to re-share a wi-fi connection you’ll need to use another software, like Connectify Hotspot.

    There other other scenarios where you might want to create a quick ad-hoc network, though, like if you just want to transfer some files between the two computers, or even play a game wirelessly across the network.

    Create Your Hotspot

    Download a copy of Virtual Router Plus, unzip the file and launch the executable. Windows 8’s SmartSCreen feature will kick in and block the program from running – just click ‘More info’ followed by the ‘Run anyway’ button to get to work.

    Enter the name you would like to use for the ad-hoc network that is being created and secure it with a password. Use the drop down menu to select which of the available connections should be shared and then click Start Virtual Router Plus.

    Getting Connected

    The connection can then be used just like any other wifi connection. Other laptops, smartphones and tablets will detect the network and you just need to supply the relevant password.

    Sure my 4G Verizon USB stick gives my laptop Internet, but after lending my laptop to my wife for the umpteenth time so she could check Facebook and her Labs4Rescue dog adoption site she volunteers for, it was time to find a way to share my mobile broadband Verizon 4G connection!

    So here’s a step-by-step tutorial that will show you how to share your wired Internet connection or your mobile broadband (EVDO, 3G, 4G) Internet connection:

    1. Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings

    2. Open Command Prompt in Administrator mode (From Windows 8 Modern UI / Metro, search for ‘command’ and instead of hitting the Enter key, use Ctrl+Shift+Enter or right-click the ‘Command Prompt’ icon and then click ‘Run as Administrator’)

    3. Now we need to enable /add the “Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport adapter” and set the Wi-Fi hotspot credentials.

    Type this in the Command Prompt (change accordingly):
    netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=keating key=mypassword

    This configures a Wi-Fi network with SSID “keating” and protected with the key “mypassword”. Also, you will n ow see ‘Local Area Connection2’ (or similar name) associated as a ‘Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter’ (highlighted) listed under ‘Network Connections’:

    Note: If you don’t see the Local Area Connection2 or a new network adapter, run this command:

    netsh wlan start hostednetwork

    4. Next, right-click, Properties for your wired Internet Connection OR your wireless mobile broadband connection you wish to share. In my case, I right-clicked Mobile Broadband (4G), then Properties:

    5. Click Sharing tab, then drop-down box under ‘Home networking connection:’ and pick the connection associated with Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter – in my case ‘Local Area Connection2’:

    6. Type ‘netsh wlan start hostednetwork’ [if you ran this command from previous step above you may not to run it again]

    7. Done! Go to a Wi-Fi-enabled device (iPad, Kindle, iPhone, Android, laptop, etc.) and connect to your shared Wi-Fi hotspot.

    Now, if you want to stop this network, at the Command Prompt simply type ‘netsh wlan stop hostednetwork ‘.

    Note: You will have to start/stop the hostednetwork every time you reboot your computer. I would advise you to create desktop shortcuts for these commands (or create .bat batch file) and set it to run as administrator.

    I should mention Verizon sells their 4G MiFi hotspot device which allows you to share up to only 5 devices. The tutorial I explained above lets me use a standard 4G mobile broadband USB stick and share it with virtually unlimited users. Though you should be aware of any bandwidth overage charges of course. Enjoy!

    The wireless Hosted Network feature in Windows 7 lets anyone with a supported Wi-Fi adapter and driver become a wireless AP for other Wi-Fi users, while also having the ability to connect to another wireless network.

    Back in 2002, the research department at Microsoft started experimenting with the virtualization of 802.11 wireless adapters under the project code name VirtualWiFi. They discovered a way to make a single physical Wi-Fi adapter look like multiple adapters in Windows.

    VirtualWiFi lets users simultaneously connect to multiple wireless networks with only one wireless card. They hoped this technology could be used in a variety of applications, including wireless diagnosis and troubleshooting, Wi-Fi mesh networking, virtual access points, and wireless repeating.

    What is a wireless Hosted Network?

    Though the VirtualWiFi project disbanded before the feature was fully implemented, Microsoft has included some of the underlying functionality in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Microsoft coined the name, wireless Hosted Network, for this new feature.

    The wireless Hosted Network feature uses the VirtualWiFi technology along with a software-based access point (AP) feature. Thus, it lets anyone with a supported Wi-Fi adapter and driver to become a wireless AP for other Wi-Fi users, while also having the ability to connect to another wireless network. It also includes a DHCP server, so users automatically receive an IP address.

    One use of this new feature might be to extend a hotel’s paid-Internet connection to other Wi-Fi users for free—not that I advocate this practice. Another more legitimate use might be to “repeat” a network’s signal. In any case, it serves as a quick mobile AP.

    Others might suggest that you can use this virtual AP as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Just remember, even though the wireless Hosted Network is encrypted, giving out the key comprises the security. People with the key can snoop on the other users that are connected. Plus the users might give the key to others.

    End-users can interact with the wireless Hosted Network via the netsh command-line tool. Software developers can also write front-end utilities, like Connectify, or use the capabilities in other third-party applications. In this article, we are going to experiment with the netsh tool.

    Getting started with wireless Hosted Networks

    In order to use the wireless Hosted Network feature, your wireless adapter must be using drivers certified for Windows 7. If Windows detects a supported adapter, it will automatically add a connection to the Network Connections window, named Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, such as Figure 1 shows. If multiple supported-adapters exist, Windows will automatically choose the one to use for the wireless Hosted Network.

    Microsoft requires all wireless Hosted Networks to use WPA2-PSK (AES) encryption. However, there is not a mechanism put in place to prevent file sharing. Hosts and clients should manually protect shares if not all users can be trusted.

    In addition, keep in mind that wireless Hosted Networks do not automatically restart after the computer resumes from sleep, hibernate, or restarts. However, if used, a third-party utility might initiate a reconnection. If you manually start the wireless Hosted Network again, Windows will use the previously entered network details though.

    Manually create a virtual AP with netsh

    If you want to experiment with the wireless Hosted Network feature with text commands, click the Start button, enter “cmd” and hit Enter. Once the Command Prompt window appears, you can enter the following to set the network details:

    netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=YourVirtualNetworkName key=YourNetworkPassword

    Of course, replace the SSID and key placeholders with your desired network name and WPA2-PSK encryption key.

    Before you enable the Hosted Network, you can configure the real network adapter to share its Internet access using the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) feature of Windows. This way people connecting to the virtual AP will receive Internet access. You can leave the Command Prompt open so you can start the Hosted Network later.

    To enable ICS, navigate through the Control Panel or Network and Sharing Center to bring up the Network Connections window. Then right-click the network adapter that’s connected to the Internet and select Properties. Then select the Sharing tab, check the Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection, choose the Hosted Network Connection from the drop-down listbox, and click OK. See Figure 2 for an example.

    Now return to the Command Prompt and enter the following to enable the Hosted Network:

    netsh wlan start hostednetwork

    To manually turn the Hosted Network off, enter the following:

    netsh wlan stop hostednetwork

    To see the Hosted Network details (see Figure 3), including the MAC addresses of connected users, enter the following:

    netsh wlan show hostednetwork

    To change the WPA2-PSK key, you can enter the following:

    netsh wlan refresh hostednetwork YourNewNetworkPassword

    It’s a virtual AP

    Now others nearby should see the Hosted Network appear in their list of available wireless networks. They can connect like normal and enter the encryption key when prompted.

    Remember, you’ll have to manually start the Hosted Network again, if desired, after rebooting the computer. Most importantly, remember sharing isn’t blocked; make sure you only invite people you trust.

    The ping command sends packets of data to a specific IP address on a network, and then lets you know how long it took to transmit that data and get a response. It’s a handy tool that you can use to quickly test various points of your network. Here’s how to use it.

    How Does Ping Work?

    Ping comes from a term used in sonar technology that sends out pulses of sound, and then listens for the echo to return. On a computer network, a ping tool is built into most operating systems that works in much the same way. You issue the ping command along with a specific URL or IP address. Your computer sends several packets of information out to that device, and then waits for a response. When it gets the response, the ping tool shows you how long each packet took to make the round trip—or tells you there was no reply.

    It sounds simple, and it is. But you can use it to good effect. You can test whether your computer can reach another device—like your router—on your local network, or whether it can reach a device on the Internet. This can help you determine if a network problem is somewhere on your local network, or somewhere beyond. The time it takes packets to return to you can help you identify a slow connection, or if you’re experiencing packet loss.

    And it pretty much doesn’t matter what operating system you’re using. Pull up a terminal or Command Prompt window, and you can use ping on macOS, Linux, or any version of Windows.

    How to Use Ping

    We’re going to use the Windows Command Prompt in our example here. But you can also use the ping command in Windows PowerShell, or in the Terminal app on macOS or any Linux distro. Once you get to using the actual command, it works the same everywhere.

    In Windows, hit Windows+R. In the Run window, type “cmd” into the search box, and then hit Enter.

    At the prompt, type “ping” along with the URL or IP address you want to ping, and then hit Enter. In the image below, we’re pinging www.howtogeek.com and getting a normal response.

    That response shows the URL you’re pinging, the IP address associated with that URL, and the size of the packets being sent on the first line. The next four lines show the replies from each individual packet, including the time (in milliseconds) it took for the response and the time-to-live (TTL) of the packet, which is the amount of time that must pass before the packet is discarded.

    At the bottom, you’ll see a summary that shows how many packets were sent and received, as well as the minimum, maximum, and average response time.

    And in the next image, we’re pinging the router on our local network using its IP address. We’re also getting a normal response from it.

    When the ping tool does not get a response from whatever devices you’re pinging, it lets you know that, too.

    And that’s how to use ping at its most basic. Of course, like most commands, there are some advanced switches you can use to make it behave a bit differently. For example, you can have it keep pinging a destination until you stop the command, specify the number of times you want it to ping, set how often it should ping, and more. But unless you’re doing some very specific types of troubleshooting, you won’t need to worry much about those advanced switches.

    If you’re curious about them, though, just type “ping /?” at the Command Prompt to see a list.

    So, What Can You Do With Ping?

    Now that you know how to use the command, here are some interesting things you can do with it:

    • Ping a URL (like www.howtogeek.com) or IP address to see if you can reach an internet destination. If you get a successful response, you know that all the networking devices between you and that destination are working, including the network adapter in your computer, your router, and whatever devices exist on the internet between your router and the destination. And if you’re interested in exploring those routes further, you can use another networking tool named tracert to do just that.
    • Ping a URL to resolve its IP address. If you want know the IP address for a particular URL, you can ping the URL. The ping tool shows you right at the top the IP address it’s working with.
    • Ping your router to see if you can reach it. If you can’t successfully ping an internet location, you can then try pinging your router. A successful response lets you know that your local network is working okay, and that the problem reaching the internet location is somewhere out of your control.
    • Ping your loopback address (127.0.0.1). If you can’t successfully ping your router, but your router appears to be turned on and working, you can try pinging what’s known as a loopback address. That address is always 127.0.0.1, and pinging it successfully lets you know that the network adapter on your computer (and the networking software in your OS) is working properly.

    Note: You may not get a ping response from other computers on your local network because the built-in firewalls on those devices prevent them from responding to ping requests. If you want to be able to ping those devices, you’ll need to turn off that setting to allow pings through the firewall.

    The list above uses a kind of outside-in approach, where you ping the furthest destination first, and then work your way in to the more local devices. Some people like to work inside-out by pinging the loopback address first, then their router (or another local device), and then an internet address.

    And of course, what we’re talking about in this article is mostly about using ping to perform troubleshooting on a home or small business network. On larger networks, there’s a lot more complexity to worry about. Plus, if you’re tasked with troubleshooting larger networks, you probably already know how to use ping and many other networking tools.

    Want to share your Windows laptop’s internet access with your other devices over Wi-Fi? Windows 10 comes with a hidden built-in tool to turn your computer into a Wi-Fi hotspot, and there are third-party utilities that also make sharing your internet connection a cinch.

    The hotspot feature comes in handy when your hotel room has only one Ethernet connection or you’re limited to one login for a Wi-Fi network. You can get your Wi-Fi-only tablets and other devices online using your laptop (or desktop PC). The methods below also work with previous version of Windows, from Windows 7 and up.

    Before you get started, though, you might want to check if your computer’s Wi-Fi adapter supports this feature, called “hosted network” or “AP mode.” Use the steps here to see if yours will work with either third-party utilities or Windows 10 and above.

    Turn Your Windows PC into a Wi-Fi Hotspot with Connectify

    The easiest way to create a Wi-Fi hotspot with your computer is with freemium software Connectify. The free version lets you share your computer’s internet connection to other Wi-Fi devices, whether you go online from your computer over Wi-Fi or over a wired Ethernet connection. For most people, the free, ad-supported version should do.

    1. Download Connectify Hotspot. (Choose the “Continue to Download” option unless you want to buy one of the premium versions.)

    2. Double-click the downloaded EXE file to install it.

    If you’re using Avast or possibly another anti-virus program, you might have to temporarily disable for the installation to continue. (For Avast, right-click on the Avast icon in the system tray and go to Avast shields control > Disable until computer is restarted. The process should be similar for other A/V programs that have a problem.)

    4. Reboot the computer to finish the installation.

    5. After the computer reboots, check the box “Allow Connectify Hotspot to communicate on these networks:” next to “Private networks, such as my home or work network.

    6. Click the purple “Try It Out” button in the Connectify screen. You’ll be presented with an offer to buy the program, but you can just click “Try Now” to continue.

    7. Follow the prompts in the Connectify wizard to complete the installation.

    Once done, your new Wi-Fi hotspot will be created (by default called “Connectify-me”) and your other devices will be able to use your laptop’s internet connection by connecting to the Connectify Wi-Fi hotspot. When connecting to the new Wi-Fi hotspot, make sure you use the password set in the Connectify settings tab.

    To stop the Wi-Fi hotspot, click the “Stop Hotspot” button in the program.

    Alternatives: The Connectify Hotspot free version is ad-supported, but it is free to use. The Connectify premium versions ($35-50) offer more features, such as sharing internet from your computer’s 3G or 4G card or turning your computer into a Wi-Fi repeater. If you’re running Windows 8 or Windows 7, however, you can use the open source Virtual Router instead, which is completely free (and ad-free) but, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to work on Windows 10.

    Turn Your Windows PC into a Wi-Fi Hotspot from the Command Line

    Windows 10, like Windows 7 and 8 before it, comes with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot feature that can share your computer’s internet access. However, it requires you to have a wired internet connection or a second network adapter (i.e., plugged into the router or modem via Ethernet) or two Wi-Fi cards–one for sharing and one for your laptop. In Windows 8 and Windows 10, this internet connection sharing feature is hidden, with no graphical interface, but you can enable and disable it from the Command Prompt.

    1. Open a command prompt with administrative privileges. The quickest way is to tap the Windows key, type in cmd, and then right-click on the Command Prompt app listing and choose “Run as an administrator.”

    2. In the command prompt window, type in netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=[SSID] key=[bpassword]. Replace [SSID] and [password] with the network name you want for the Wi-Fi network and the password for it (without the brackets).

    This will set up and enable a new Wi-Fi network with the SSID and passphrase you set, but we’re not done yet.

    3. Type netsh wlan start hostednetwork at the prompt and hit Enter to start the network:

    4. Open Network Connections (search in the Start menu for “view network connections” and click on the result)

    5. Right-click on your main network connection and choose “Properties.”

    6. Go to the Sharing tab and click the checkbox labeled “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection”.

    7. In the dropdown box right below that, choose the network connection your computer is currently using. Click OK.

    This will set up your new Wi-Fi hotspot. To stop the hosted network, type in netsh wlan stop hostednetwork in the command prompt and hit Enter.

    Windows 8.1 does not have the option built-in to create a wireless hotspot. However, sometimes there is no Wi-Fi available (such as in a hotel or conference room) while you want to go online with your iPad or other tablet. This guide will show you step by step on how to create a Wi-Fi hotspot in Windows 8.1 in just a couple minutes. Basically, your computer’s wired connection will be shared to other devices (tablets, phones, laptops and so on) you connect it to.

    First of all and before we start, make sure you have a working internet connection. Since you visit this website, I presume you do. Now, you have two options to create this hotspot.

    Create a Wi-Fi hotspot on Windows by command line

    1. Open the command prompt in Windows (you can go to Start en simply type ‘cmd’ and it should be the first result) with Administrator privileges. Now copy and paste this command:
    2. Of course, you might want to change the value of ssid to something else, as well as the password that will be used by the other devices to connect to your computer. Execute the command by pressing enter; you have now created a virtual network adapter.
    3. Now we should start this virtual adapter we just created. Enter this command in command prompt:
    4. Open the control panel, go to ‘Network and Sharing Center’ and click on ‘Local Area Network’.
    5. Go to ‘Properties’ of the new opened window. Then, open the ‘Sharing tab’ and check the option ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection’.
    6. By using the drop down menu, select the virtual network adapter that you have created earlier. Then you click on ‘Ok’ and you may then close the window.

    You should now check with another device to see if your newly created wireless network exists and if you can connect to it. If you followed these steps closely, your Wi-Fi hotspot should have been created and you can now use your computer’s internet with your iPad, Android or other Wi-Fi enabled device.

    Virtual Router Installer

    A second option we have is by using a tool called ‘Virtual Router Installer’. This is a file you install on your Windows computer and which provides an easy to use interface. It will allow you to set an SSID for your wireless hotspot as well as a password.
