How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Virtual machines are a great way to optimize the performance of servers. One server can host multiple virtual machines by sharing its hardware across independent virtual “computers,” thus allowing you to use available resources in a much better way.

VMware is one of the leaders in this area. Their hypervisor software can create and simultaneously run several virtual machines (VMs) from a single physical server or even a desktop computer. Also, each VM can run a different operating system. Let’s see how to make a virtual machine from a physical one in VMware.

Virtualization Saves the Day

In recent years, virtualization has found its way into homes. With a set of free VMware tools, you can backup your old computer to a new one without much fuss.

For example, you can run the virtual image of your old laptop directly from your main desktop PC. That will allow you to keep using the old laptop as if you still have it. That’s great if it had some older apps that might not work well with the newer operating systems.

For the sake of this guide, it’s best to use the example mentioned above, where you have your old laptop, which you want to virtualize using your main desktop. To do this, you’ll need to install two applications from VMware:

  1. VMware vCenter Converter Standalone – to download it, you’ll have to create a free account on the VMware website.
  2. VMware Workstation Player – you can find it on the official WMvare site, as well.

Virtualizing the Physical Machine

As mentioned above, the example is that you want to virtualize your old laptop, so that you can run it from your desktop computer. Before your start, please make sure you have a separate hard drive that will store the virtual image of your laptop.

For this purpose, you can either use an external USB hard drive or a secondary drive if you have it installed on your laptop. Make sure you have enough free space on it.

  1. Download and install VMware vCenter Converter Standalone on your old laptop.
  2. Start the vCenter Converter application.
  3. Click “Convert machine” located in the top right corner of the app’s main window.
  4. The “Conversion” window will open.
  5. From the “Select source type” drop-down menu, select the “Powered-on machine” option.
  6. In the section “Specify the powered-on machine,” select “This local machine.”
  7. Click “Next.”
  8. Wait until the app performs the analysis of your laptop. When it’s done, the “Destination System” screen will appear.
  9. From the “Select destination type” drop-down menu, choose “VMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine.”
  10. From the “Select VMware product” drop-down menu, choose “VMware Workstation 8.0.x”.
  11. In the “Virtual machine details” section, type the name of your laptop. For example, let’s call it “Laptop.”
  12. In the “Select a location for the virtual machine” section, click “Browse” and pick the location where you want to save the VM image file. It can be either an external USB hard drive or a secondary drive on your laptop.
  13. Click “Next.”
  14. Now the “Options” screen will appear, offering further setup options.
  15. The “Current settings” window will show you how everything looks at the moment. If you want to change a particular setting, click “Edit” next to it. You can leave everything as is. The default values are already set in a way to optimize the process.
  16. Once you’re satisfied with the selected options, click “Next.”
  17. The “Summary” window now appears. Click the “Back” button to return to one of the previous screens if you want to change something. Otherwise, click “Next” to start the virtualization of your old laptop.

Once you’ve started the virtualization, it can take two hours or even more for the process to complete. You shouldn’t use the laptop until the virtualization finishes. If you need to stop the process for any reason, highlight the job in the main window that’s currently running and click the red “Stop” button from the upper menu. This will effectively abort the virtualization process, meaning you’ll have to start it all over again.

When the virtualization is complete, close the VMware vCenter Converter.

Virtually Ingenious!

Thanks to virtualization, you get to keep all of your old computers. It’s also a good option if you’re using a couple of desktop or laptop computers at the same time. That way, you can save up some storage space. Finally, if you sell the hardware of your virtualized machines, you might rake in enough money to do a decent upgrade on your main computer.

Have you managed to create a virtual machine of an old computer? Did you run into any issues during the process? Please share your experiences in the comments section below.

Problem

In a previous article we looked at how to install VMware Workstation and in this article we look at how to build a virtual machine for SQL Server.

Solution

We will create a virtual machine using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 operating system. The following steps could be used to build virtual machines for other operating systems. After the OS has been setup, we can then install SQL Server or other software which we will cover in a future article.

Create Virtual Machine for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8

I recommend having the operating system setup ISO image handy before starting the creation of the virtual machine. The installer will be required during the VM creation to complete the OS install for the new VM, but the OS can be installed after the VM has been created as well.

Login to your host computer where you have installed VMware Workstation PRO 15.5 and launch the program. You will get the below screen once VMware workstation is opened.

There are 3 options:

  1. Create a New Virtual Machine
  2. Open a Virtual Machine
  3. Connect to a Remote Server

Click Create a New Virtual Machine to build a new VM.

When a virtual machine is encrypted, you must specify the password in order to change its settings, start it, .
However, when you stop an encrypted virtual machine, it will remain unlocked in VMware Workstation until VMware Workstation or the corresponding tab is closed.

To prevent this from happening, you can enable the “Close after powering off or suspending” option in the “Power” section.
Thus, once the machine is shutdown, the virtual machine will be automatically locked and the password will be required again to use or edit it.

Why migrate physical PC to Virtual Machine?

Most of Windows users know that there are existing many safety hazards potentially in some operations. Sometimes, an incorrect operation may let your system crash, even worse. To avoid this kind of problems, operating it on Virtual Machine is a wise way.

Virtual Machine such as VirtualBox, VMware, Hyper-V, Virtual PC provides the function of running multiple OS in virtual environment. You can do nearly all the things you want to do in Virtual Machine if you are worried about the physical PC’s safety.

To convert physical computer to Virtual Machine, moving the physical OS to Virtual Machine is the most effective way. Then, how to do it?

How to migrate physical computer to Virtual Machine

AOMEI Backupper, designed by AOMEI TECH, is a powerful backup software which you can use to migrate the OS to Virtual Machine. Almost all the Windows PC OS and Server OS are supported in different versions of AOMEI Backupper. For PC users, we highly recommend the Professional version to you. It offers the backup & recovery, clone and sync features you need in Windows 11/10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP. With its easy-to-use interface, you can operate it without any help. Please download AOMEI Backupper first:

Here are the specific steps of migrating physical PC to Virtual Machine. Before you do, there are some preparations:

в—Џ You need to install a Virtual Machine software like VMware Workstation first.

в—Џ If your virtual Machine is on another computer, prepare a USB flash drive of which the volume is at least equal to the system size of the source computer.

If the Virtual Machine is on your computer:

Step 1. Follow the guides to create a system backup image first and remember where you put the image like a USB flash drive.

Step 2. Create a bootable ISO file and save it on the local disk.

Step 3. Start the Virtual Machine from the bootable ISO file. It will run AOMEI Backupper automatically. Then, click “Restore” and follow the wizard to restore the system backup image to this Virtual Machine.

If the Virtual Machine is on another computer:

Step 1. Create a system image and save it on your USB flash drive (other removable devices are OK and you can even store it on NAS).

Step 2. Make a bootable ISO file and put it on the USB flash drive.

Step 3. Start the Virtual Machine from the bootable USB.

Step 4. You’ll see loaded AOMEI Backupper once login. Select “Restore” and then “Select Task” to find the image files you create before.

VMware Workstation is a software that can be install on existing physical machine (generally PC) and can be used to emulate various operating systems. As of 2013 VMware workstation 9 is the latest version that is mostly used by IT professionals and newbies for learning and test purposes. There are many features that makes this software a great learning and testing tool. You can easily create virtual machines inside the VMware workstation and run various operating systems. There are a lot of network options within VMware workstation for configuring networks for virtual machines. You can connect VMware Workstation virtual machine to physical network. This allows to create real world testing scenario. You can run various virtual servers (like FTP, Mail Server, DHCP, etc.) and connect to the network. The network will assume that the virtual machine is separate physical host. Assuming you know how to install virtual machine, let’s get going.

Connect VMware Workstation Virtual Machine to Physical Network

I will show you the steps by connecting Windows XP machine to external network. The diagram below shows our scenario.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Windows XP is installed as virtual machine in VMware Workstation 9. At first configure static IP address in Windows XP machine as 192.168.50.102 and gateway of router’s IP as 192.168.50.100. When testing servers static IP address will be mostly used.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Now open the virtual machine settings of Windows XP machine in VMware Workstation. Select Network Adapter in Hardware tab. Here, choose the option, Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network. Then click OK button. Note: – If you choose replicate physical network connection state, IP address of virtual machine is automatically changed if you moved between networks which is assigned by DHCP server of the particular network. This works if the machine is configured to get IP address automatically from DHCP in Local area connection properties.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Your Windows machine is now connected to physical network. You can now Ping your default gateway (R1), and PC (Physical machine’s IP address) from Windows XP machine and vice-versa. You can also ping your virtual machine’s IP address from you machine, outside of VMware workstation application. If your configuration is right but it’s not pinging then type “ipconfig /flushdns” in the command prompt of PC (Physical machine). This will solve the problem by flushing (deleting) cache DNS records from PC.

How to install RHEL 6.6 on Mac OS X, Windows, Linux using VirtualBox?

VMware allows you to install and run different guest operating system on your base machine. It is a kind of software implementation of a machine (i.e. a computer). If you want to migrate to another operating system and before moving to it you want to give it a try, then VMware is the tool that you need. It create a virtual environment within your base machine, where you can install a new operating system. You can also test beta softwares in your VMware machine. VMware has several advantages over different Virtual Machines like Microsoft Virtual PC, Microsoft Virtual Server 2005, Microsoft Hyper-V, Oracle Virtual Box etc. Unlike these Virtualization software it supports installation of both, Windows and unix/linux based Operating Systems. Again, another advantage is that, using VMware workstation you can run more than one virtual machines at the same time. There are many different versions of VMware. You can choose your desired version depending on your computing environment and needs. Here I am using VMware Workstation and installing Ubuntu 12.10 on it. Follow the steps below to know how to install any guest operating system on a host OS using VMware Workstation.

Steps to create virtual machines using VMware Workstation

Want to keep an old Windows or Linux installation around without keeping the hardware around? Convert that physical Windows partition to a virtual hard drive, allowing you to boot it in a virtual machine program like VMware, Hyper-V, Parallels, or VirtualBox.

Windows ties itself to your computer’s hardware. These tools will create a copy of a physical machine’s state and turn it into a virtual machine, allowing it to boot in the virtual machine program you prefer.

For VMware – Windows or Linux

VMware offers a free tool known as VMware vCenter Converter. It can convert both Windows and Linux physical machines into VMware virtual machines. You can then boot these virtual machines in VMware’s free VMware Player application, so this can be a completely free solution. You could also boot it up in VMware Workstation or VMware Fusion.

Download vCenter Converter from VMware and launch it on the computer you want to turn into a virtual machine. Click the “Convert machine” button on the toolbar and select the current, powered-on computer as the source. Choose a VMware Workstation, VMware Player, or VMware Fusion virtual machine as the destination and configure the options for the virtual machine.

The utility will then create a virtual machine from the current Windows system, modifying it so it will boot properly in a virtual machine program. Save that virtual machine to an external hard drive and boot it up on a different computer.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

For Microsoft Hyper-V – Windows Only

Microsoft offers a Disk2vhd tool — one of their many useful SysInternals utilities. This utility will convert a running Windows system to a VHD (virtual hard drive) file for use in Microsoft’s virtual machine products, such as the Hyper-V virtual machine tool included with professional versions of Windows 8 and 8.1.

Run this tool on the Windows system you want to convert. You’ll be able to select which partitions and drives you want to include in the VHD file. It’ll create a copy of the running Windows system as a VHD file, and you can take that VHD file to another computer and run it in Hyper-V — the converted physical system should boot up just fine as long as you launch it in Microsoft’s own Hyper-V virtual machine software.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

For Parallels – Windows or Linux

Parallels offers their own tool known as “Parallels Transporter Agent.” This utility can be installed on either Windows or Linux, and it can convert a physical system to a virtual machine for use in the Parallels virtual machine application for Macs. It can copy the physical machine to a Parallels virtual machine file on an external drive, or you can transfer it to a Mac running Parallels over a local network.

Download the Parallels Transporter Agent application from Parallels and run it on your Windows or Linux system. Use the wizard to transfer your current physical PC to an external hard drive or your Mac over the network, choosing exactly what makes it into that virtual machine.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

For VirtualBox – A Manual Method

VirtualBox doesn’t offer an easy graphical utility for converting a physical machine to a virtual machine. If you’re feeling particularly adventerous, they do offer some unsupported instructions for converting a physical Windows computer to a VirtualBox virtual machine. This requires some registry tweaking and shutting down the computer. You’ll then have to manually create a copy of the disk and convert it to a VirtualBox VDI file. The process for converting a Linux virtual machine should be about the same, but without all the extra tweaks required to make Windows behave. It’s much easier to move Linux installations between different machines with different hardware configurations.

This process isn’t for the faint of heart, and we include it here only for the sake of completeness. Even if you use VirtualBox already, you may want to just use VMware or Microsoft’s utility and give VMware or Hyper-V a try. If you’re still ready to give it a try, consult the MIgrate Windows page on VirtualBox’s wiki.

If you’re converting a Windows PC to a virtual machine, remember that you may encounter licensing issues. Windows Activation may detect that it’s running on a different machine, and you may have to contact Microsoft to get it properly activated. Windows licenses are only supposed to be in use on one computer at a time.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

The content you keep on your virtual machine’s hard disk is stored in a virtual disk file – a .vmdk file. The number of these files may vary, though they can grow up to 2GB in size. They store the data of a virtual machine, and you can create a VM from them. Here’s how.

Step 1: Create a Virtual Machine

You can download virtual machines from the internet – you don’t always need to create them yourself. However, what you download are .vmdk files that store the VM contents. Unfortunately, they often don’t work. Therefore, creating a VM and then importing a .vdmk file is a better and safer option. Here’s what to do.

  1. Launch the Workstation on your computer.
  2. Open the File menu and select New and then Virtual Machine.
  3. Choose Custom as the type of your machine.
  4. Select your hardware compatibility preferences and continue.
  5. On the next screen, choose I will install the OS later, and click on Next.
  6. Select an already installed OS and its version.
  7. Pick the name and location for the file where the VM will be stored.
How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation
  8. Select the number of processors, cores, amount of memory, and other properties you want your machine to have. Click on Next to save your preferences.
  9. Click on a network type that you want for your VM.
  10. Select the Use an Existing Virtual Disk option.
  11. Click on Browse and go to the location where the mentioned .vmdk file is.
  12. Double-check the settings within Summary and select Finish to complete the VM creation.
How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Step 2: Import the File

When you’ve created a new virtual machine, it’s time to add the .vmdk file to it and boot the operating system. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Workstation and the desired virtual machine.
  2. Power it down and click on the VM button.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Go to Hardware and click on Add.
  5. Choose Hard disk and click on Next.
  6. Select Use an existing virtual disk and continue.
  7. Click on Browse and find the .vmdk file.
  8. Select OK, and the file will be imported and attached to the desired virtual machine.

Note that if you use a .vmdk file to create a virtual machine, you won’t be able to use it for another virtual machine. Before it’s locked, make sure you copy the file, in case you wish to use it again later to create another VM.

Sometimes, there won’t be an error in the .vmdk file, and you’ll be able to play it. You need to download the VMware Player to do so natively, though other players may work with .vdmk files too. To download the player and complete the installation, you must create a free account and then restart the computer.

When your computer reboots, use the previously described process to import a .vmdk file to your virtual machine.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

VMDK Files and Your Virtual Machine

VMDK files are the critical components of every virtual machine. All the information a VM needs to work correctly is in these files.

Of course, you can create a virtual machine from a .vdmk file you downloaded. However, it is a somewhat unreliable route. It is best to create a VM first, and then import a .vdmk file.

Have you downloaded any .vmdk files from the web? Did you find it complicated to create a virtual machine this way? Share your experience in the comments section below.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Virtualization, in simple English, is a useful technology that helps you run multiple operating systems on the same machine.

For instance, if you are running Windows 7 on a computer, you can create virtual machines for Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux and run these operating systems on your existing Windows machine just like any other Windows application.

How to Create a Virtual Machine

Windows Virtual PC, Virtual Box and VMware Workstation are some popular applications that allow you to create new virtual machines on a Windows PC but the only problem with these programs is that they require you do everything from scratch.

That is, if you want to create a new virtual machine, you will have to install the whole operating system first using the original installer DVD and then configure it with your favorite programs. This can be both time consuming and difficult.

What if you could use your existing Windows computer, that already has all your favorite programs installed, and turn into a virtual machine?

Convert your Computer into a Virtual Machine

While it has always been possible to convert an existing hard drive into a virtual machine, the process was difficult and often required expensive programs.

Well, not anymore. There’s a new utility from Microsoft that makes it both simple and free to convert an existing installation of Windows into a virtual machine ready to run on any other computer.

Microsoft’s Sysinternals team has released a simple application called Disk2vhd, that lets you easily migrate an existing computer to a virtualized hard drive (VHD). It’s a tiny utility doesn’t even require instillation.

Create Virtual Hard Disks with Disk2VHD

When you run Disk2vhd, it will immediately show you all the drives and partitions on your computer that it can migrate to a VHD. Simply select a drive that you wish to create a VHD file from and click “Create.” Disk2vhd will convert the hard drive into a VHD file even if the computer /drive is currently in use.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

When the Virtual Machine VHD file is created, you can run it in any desktop virtualization program including the free Windows Virtual PC, Virtual Box, or VMware Player. You can also mount the virtual machine as a standard hard drive in Windows 7, and can even boot from it if your computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate.

You may use Disk2vhd to create virtual machines of your Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista and higher machines, including x64 systems.

Let’s say you have a computer that is already running all the software programs you frequently use, but you now want to move to a new computer or upgrade your operating system. You can then consider creating a virtual machine of your old machine using the Microsoft utility and this will help you use all your favorite programs (with the same settings) on the new machine.

You can also use virtualization to create a ghost image of your hard drive in a single file and this will be handy in the event of a disk failure.

Disk2vhd is an useful tool that will make it much easier for you to enjoy the benefits of virtualization without being too technical.

And in 4 to 6 weeks it will stop working, the kernel will be updated and it will no longer compile. In a year to 2 years you will stop being able to find fixes for this problem on the internet, or it will be above your technical expertise to apply the fixes and you will cease being able to use VMware at all without spending hundeds of dollars to “upgrade” to the next version. Which is ridiculous for a “free” operating system.

Which is why I have stopped using VMware.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

After a long thought, I have finally decided to come up with a guide which will help us set up a VMWare vSphere Lab running on VMWare Workstation.

Until now, most of my articles were revolving around the Microsoft products, and I have been getting a lot of emails stating that I also write articles on VMWare as well.

Hence, I decided to build a brand new VMWare vSpehere Lab and I will document everything that I do step by step so that you can follow along and perform all that I will be showing here.

This guide will server as a start point for every VMWare fan or IT professionals who want to give VMWare products a spin.

I have also tried to create this lab using bare minimum resources because I understand that not everyone can own a server, but everyone has a powerful PC or laptop easily at their disposal.

This guide describes the setup of Portable Lab to run nested ESXi 6.0 servers with nested VMs, shared storage, virtual networking etc…

You’ll be able to test Fault Toerance, vMotion and High Availability as well. Those are the enterprise class features of VMware vSphere.

While most IT pros will have physical labs at home running real servers, real NAS/SAN boxes, but not everybody can afford it, that is where VMWare Workstation comes in to picture and it is specifically designed to test and build labs for people who cannot afford costly equipment.

We will be building an ultimate VMware vSphere lab running in VMware Workstation with nested ESXi servers and few cloned VMs.

Yes, definitely physical lab is much better is terms of performance, but I assure you that you will be surprised that we can test all the VMWare vSphere just using a portable lab, and the best part is it is portable, you can carry it along with you anywhere you want. 🙂

So let us jump right in and see what we will be covering throughout this guide.

What do you need to build VMWare vSphere Lab?

This part will explain the requirements for building the VMWare vSpehere Lab. Also various software that you will need to download and keep it ready before you can start.

The network design of VMWare vSphere lab in VMware Workstation.

One of the biggest challenges for newcomers is the network design. So we will be using how to design the network carefully so that we can test all the features of the VMWare vSphere Lab.

Preparing Windows Templates for VMWare vSphere Lab

In this part, we will set up the basic templates of all the Virtual Machines that we will be using and also setup a few common parameters which will save us time in future.

How to create the Domain Controller Virtual Machine

This VM will be not only our domain controller, but will also do a DNS resolution for our small virtual lab…DNS resolution is a necessary.

Installing of Nested ESXi hosts in our VMware vSphere Lab

In this section, we will installing the ESXi hosts. You will not believe how easy to install the ESXi host compared to older versions of the ESX hosts.

Installing the vCenter Virtual Machine for VMWare vSphere Lab

The vCenter VM will run several services. We must grant more memory to this VM. We will also add the ESXi hosts to the vCenter for easy administration.

Designing the Shared Storage for VMWare vSphere Lab

In order to implement most of the cool features from VMware vSphere, like vMotion, HA, the VMs must “live” on shared storage. Shared storage is basically datastore visible from every host of your cluster.

Vmware Workstation is great software that allows you to use two different operating systems at the same time. Sometimes you may want to uninstall VMware Workstation for different reasons. So if you have decided to remove VMware Workstation from your Windows 10 PC or laptop, here you will learn the easiest way to do it. uninstall VMware Workstation from Windows 10 PC or laptop.

VMware Workstation

VMware Pro Workstation it is a hosted hypervisor that runs on x64 versions of the Windows and Linux operating systems (an x86 version of earlier versions was available); allows users to configure virtual machines (VMs) on a single physical machine and use them simultaneously with the host machine.

Each virtual machine can run its own operating system, including versions of Microsoft Windows, Linux, BSD, and MS-DOS. VMware Workstation is being produced and marketed by VMware, Inc., a subsidiary of Dell Technologies. A free version of VMware Workstation Player is available for non-commercial use. You need an operating system license to use proprietary systems like Windows. Linux virtual machines prepared and configured for various purposes are available from a variety of sources.

Meanwhile, VMware Workstation makes it easy to bridge existing host network adapters and share physical drives and USB devices with a virtual machine. You can simulate disk drives; an ISO image file can be mounted as a virtual optical drive and virtual drives can be mounted as .vmdk files.

VMware Workstation Pro can save a virtual state at any time. These snapshots can be restored later, essentially restoring the virtual machine to the saved state, as it was and free of any post-snapshot damage to the VM. VMware Workstation provides the ability to group multiple virtual machines into an inventory folder. The machines in that folder can be powered on and off as a single object, which is useful for testing complex client-server environments.

Why do you need to uninstall VMware Workstation?

VMware Workstation Pro can offer you many benefits, but you may want to uninstall this software. For example, your PC does not meet the minimum computer requirements to use VMware Workstation, so while VMware is running in the background, your machine will be extremely slow. Or maybe you want to upgrade your version of VMware Workstation to a higher version, so you need to uninstall the previous version first.

Meanwhile, due to unforeseen errors like “VMware cannot connect to a virtual machine, some users uninstall VMware.” Make sure that you have the right to run the software and access all the files it uses, and that you have access rights to all temporary file directories when you enable VMware Match. VMware Player must be uninstalled and reinstalled to fix issues. Whatever the explanation, it turns out that VMware Player removal is a stressful task.

Creating a new Windows VM is a time-consuming process as you need to create the VM, install the operating system, and then install all available updates. In a small lab consisting of 1-2 servers this may be unnecessary, however, as the lab expands with more servers then we need to save time when adding new VMs.

In today’s article, you’ll see how to create a Windows VM template on VMware Workstation which will be the basis for all the other VMs you will create from now on. Using this VM template, you will be able to create ‘clean’ clones of the template to speed up the process of adding new VMs to the virtual lab.

Since my virtual lab consists of Windows VMs, the VM template will be based on Windows Server 2016.

Creating the template VM

First, you’ll need to create the VM to use as a template by following the steps we have described in a previous article.

When I create a template VM, I usually configure its hardware to have a direct internet connection (to download updates) via NAT and give it a bit more RAM (eg 4 GB) to be able to run faster. After the template is finished, I give it the final hardware I want it to have.

Install the OS

Next, start the operating system installation process using the installation ISO, in my case, we will see Windows Server 2016.

Once the installation is complete, stop when you reach the OOBE (Out-of-Box Experience) phase. At this point, we will enter Audit Mode by skipping the creation of an Administrator account and set individual OOBE settings. This is done to create a completely generic template that will give us flexibility later while creating the new VMs based on that template.

To enter Audit Mode, press Ctrl + Shift + F3 when you reach the first OOBE screen as shown in the picture below.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Immediately afterward, you will be logged in to a temporary administrator account by skipping OOBE. Even if you restart the VM, you will remain in Audit mode until you reach the Sysprep phase that we will see below.

Install updates and configure settings

At this point, since VM can communicate with the internet, you can start installing all available updates via Windows Update. Keeping a fully updated VM template means that you will not need to install the same updates again when you create the clones from that template.

Also, at this point, you can configure some basic settings that will also exist on the clones. It would be advisable to keep the template VM as clean as possible without installing roles etc.

After you have finished installing updates, open the command prompt with administrative privileges and type the following command to clear the operating system from older updates that are no longer needed.

dism /online /cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Once all the procedures for preparing the VM template have been completed, we will use Sysprep to prepare the system for the role of the generic template.

Open File Explorer and go to C: \ Windows \ System32 \ Sysprep. Here, open the Sysprep.exe executable file.

In the Sysprep window, select Enter System Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE), select Generalize and then select Shutdown in the drop-down box of Shutdown Options.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Pressing the OK button will begin the system preparation and finally, the VM will close.

Take snapshot of template VM

Next, we will create a new snapshot of the template VM so that we can use it later to create the next VMs based on that snapshot.

Right-click the VM template and then click Take Snapshot in the Snapshot menu.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

In the window that opens, type a name and description for that snapshot and click the Take Snapshot button to complete the process. You might want to give a name that will represent this snapshot to make it more recognizable to you after a while.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Then right-click the VM template again and click Settings to open the VM settings window.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Here, go to the Options tab and then the Advanced section. Enable the Enable Template mode (to be used for cloning) and click OK to save the changes.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

That’s it! Now, we’ve created a clean VM template that we can use as the basis for all the other VMs we’ll add to the virtual lab.

In the next article, we will just look at this process, ie how to create a new VM using the template VM that we have set up.

There’s a cool feature in VMware Workstation that basically lets you share your VM from one machine so that you can access it from any other machine remotely. This is great because if you have multiple copies of VMware on different computers, you either had to clone your VM or you had to store your VMs in a central location like on a NAS.

However, neither of those two options are necessarily ideal, especially if you have one high-end machine that you are using to run all your VMs. A clone will take up double the space and the clones will not be synced. Running VMs over the network is considerably slower and not ideal.

By setting up Workstation as a server, you can access the same virtual machine from different computers and use the processing power of the server to run the VM. In this article, I’ll show you how to setup Workstation as a server, share your VMs and how to access them remotely from another computer that is running VMware Workstation.

Step 1 – Enable Workstation Server

By default, you really shouldn’t have to do anything to share a virtual machine as it’s supposed to be enabled by default. However, in my case, it was disabled for some reason and I had to manually enable it.

To check this, open Workstation and then click on tab of the VM you want to share. Then click on VM at the top menu, then on Manage and then on Share. If you see the following message, that means the Workstation Server service is disabled.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

You can click on Start, type in services and then scroll down to the VMware Workstation Server service. In my case, it was set to Manual and it was not running.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Simply double-click on the service and click on the Start button to start the service. Also, go ahead and change the startup type to Automatic to ensure that it starts after a reboot.

Step 2 – Share the VM

Now open VMware Workstation, click on the VM you want to share and then click on VMManageShare.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

The wizard should start up correctly this time. Click Next to continue.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

On this screen, you have to give your shared virtual machine a name and you have to choose whether you want to move it to the default shared directory or if you want to clone the whole virtual machine.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Note: When you share a virtual machine, you gain and lose some features. Even though you gain remote access, you lose the following features: unity, shared folders, auto-protect, drag and drop, copy/paste, thin print, 3D acceleration, and the ability to connect USB devices connected to the host to the virtual machine.

Click Finish and the process should complete fairly quickly. You’ll see a couple of checkmarks as confirmation.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Step 3: Remotely Access VM

To access your shared VM remotely, you need to know the IP address of the computer acting as the server. You can do this easily by clicking on Start, typing in CMD and then typing ipconfig in the command window.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Now go to the other computer that has VMware Workstation installed and click on the Home tab.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

You’ll see a button that says Connect to a Remote Server. Click on that option and you’ll get a small dialog that asks you the server name, the user name and the password.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

The server name can be either the IP address or the hostname of the computer. The username and password needs to be of a local administrator account on the server computer. If you are logged into that computer using your Microsoft account, you can use that login info to connect.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

When connecting, you may see a dialog that warns you about the security certificate on the server. This is normally not a security issue (as long as you trust that computer) and you can click on Connect Anyway. If all works well, you should see the following screen in a new tab.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

At the bottom, you should see all the virtual machines that you are currently sharing. In my case, I only shared one Windows 10 virtual machine. Click on it and then click the green play button to power it on. You can also right click on it to start it. Note that once it is powered on, you still have to right-click on it and choose Open to view the remote VM in a new tab.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Now you can use that VM as if it was running locally on your machine. Over a local area network, it works very well and I didn’t experience any lag or delays.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

By default, the shared directory where shared VMs get saved is C:\Users\Public\Documents\Shared\Virtual Machines\ and the default port it uses to connect to the remote server is port 443. If you want to change either of these settings, you can do so by going to EditPreferences and clicking on Shared VMs.

How to create a virtual machine on your pc with vmware workstation

Note that you should probably make these changes before you share any VMs because it can only be changed when there are no active shared VMs. If you want to change it, you have to first stop sharing each VM, which moves it out of the shared VM directory.

If you change the port number, when connecting from the client computer, you have to type in the hostname followed by a colon and the port number. For example, it would be 192.168.1.233:8000 for me if I was using port 8000 instead of 443. You can change the port number to increase security.

If you run into any problems or issues, feel free to post a comment and I’ll try to help. Enjoy!
