How to Locate the Screencast Tool
The screencast tool is a part of the Windows 10 creators update inside the Xbox app. It was most likely developed to improve interactivity on the Xbox platform. This doesn’t imply that it is for gamers alone, as anyone with Windows can use it.
1. Search for “Xbox’”on Windows search. Click to open.
2. Complete the registration processes if you are launching the app for the first time. If you don’t have access to the Internet, don’t worry; the app will keep running nonetheless.

Use the Application to Make Screencasts

Note that this tool works differently than the actual record tool and must have “background recording” activated for it to work. When you start the Game Bar, this tool begins to record your screen immediately. The moment you click on it, it stops the recording and saves the recorded file. It is handy if you want to start recording the moment you start an app. The shortcut to access this function is Win + Alt + G .
- The Fourth Icon – The Screencast Tool – This is the actual recording tool and differs from the “Record that” tool because of the level of control it affords you. With the screencast tool you can choose when to begin the recording and also when to end it. It is activated by clicking the red button. When you have recorded enough, you can click the same icon to end the session. It allows you to record many times per session without exiting the Game Bar. The shortcut to access this function is Win + Alt + R .
- The Fifth Icon – The Broadcast Tool – This tool allows Xbox users to share their recorded screencasts in real time. The shortcut to access this function is Win + Alt + B .
- The Sixth Icon – Game Mode – Game mode is a software technology that optimizes the game experience for Xbox gamers. If you are screencasting an application other than a game, then don’t bother with this tool. For gamers, however, you may want to toggle this tool to improve your experience while you record.
- The Seventh Icon – Settings Tool – This allows you to configure the Game Bar as you see fit. For most simple purposes, you don’t need to tamper with the settings. The default settings will serve your needs for simple screencasts.
- The eighth icon is for dragging and moving the Game Bar across the screen. To make sure that your mic captures sound during video recording, tick the “Record Mic” checkbox.
When you finish recording, follow the next steps to find your video.
Go to your videos folder. Open it and go to the “Captures” folder. You’ll find all your recorded videos right there.
Or go to the Xbox app, click on the menu icon and select “Game DVR.”
Now you can access your recorded video from the Xbox app.

I publish many video tutorials to YouTube and Udemy, but have you ever wondered how I created them? I know there are a ton of people out there that have serious skills worth sharing, but may not know how to make a video tutorial. I plan to clear things up and demonstrate that making video screencasts isn’t all that difficult.
We’ll be using free software that ships on every Mac computer. We’ll be using QuickTime for recording our screens and iMovie 10 for editing the videos that were recorded.
Let’s start by opening QuickTime Player for Mac. With it open, choose File -> New Screen Recording from the menu:
This should bring up a small recording dialog with its own menu for choosing the input source. You’ll also have the option to show your mouse clicks during the recording. I like this feature because it shows your viewer where you are clicking or what you’re trying to do.
After clicking the record button, you will be able to choose to record the entire screen or a part of the screen. My preference is to record the full screen.
When you’re done recording, you’ll have to stop the QuickTime session. In the top right of your screen, in the tool bar, you should see a little stop icon:
When you click it your video will begin processing. Clicking File -> Save will let you actually save it.
At this point, you now have a screencast to work with. It is now time to boot up iMovie and the editing process. This process can be a little time consuming, but you’ll get good at it and it won’t take much time at all.
With iMovie open, choose File -> New Movie from the menu:
Choose No Theme and give your project a name.
When your project has been created you should see an arrow in the center of the screen that says Import Media. The same can be accomplished by choosing File -> Import Media… from the iMovie menu.
After choosing to do this, find the movie file produced by QuickTime Player.
Any files imported can then be dragged into the movie timeline at the lower portion of the screen.
During the editing process, should you need to cut a clip, place the tracker at the portion you wish to split and press the Command + b key combination. Other tricks can be done in iMovie such as volume adjustment, zooming in on a portion of the screen, or adjusting playback speed. All of these features I’ve used at some point in time.
When you’re ready to export your project into a movie file that can be uploaded to YouTube, click the share icon at the top right of the screen and share it to file.
Although a little time consuming at first, recording a programming tutorial with QuickTime and editing it with iMovie wasn’t particularly difficult. This is a great skill to have because not only will you gain the respect of other developers, but YouTube and other video websites are quite profitable. You can earn a lot of money with the video tutorials that you produce.

In Storyline it’s easy to create both screencast videos and interactive software simulations. In this tutorial we’ll take a quick look at how to build software training, make edits, and enhance your instruction using the zoom screen feature.
Before we get started let’s review some screen recording basics. There are two ways to provide software training:
- Video screencasts
- Interactive simulations
Video screencasts are videos that show your recorded computer screen. They capture all of your mouse movements and any audio narration. The final output is a single video file. They’re great for “how-to” videos, but not very interactive.
Interactive simulations simulate using the software. Instead of a video, you get single screens with linked hotspots and various help instructions. That means you can simulate much of the software’s interactions by having the learners click on the right areas or enter text just as they would with the real software.
There are three ways to show interactive simulations:
- View mode: you walk through the process and the learner views what you’re doing
- Try mode: the learner tries to walk through the process & you provide visual hints and captions
- Test mode: the learner can demonstrate the ability to complete a task through a simulated test where they do all of the required actions
Articulate Storyline offers both types of screen recordings. You start by recording a video and from there you can choose to insert the video or an interactive simulation using one of the three modes.

The following information is about Microsoft Stream (Classic) which will eventually be retired and replaced by Stream (on SharePoint). To start using the newer video solution today, just upload your videos to SharePoint, Teams, Yammer, or OneDrive. Videos stored in Microsoft 365 the way you’d store any other file is the basis for Microsoft Stream (on SharePoint). Learn more.
To record your screen, you must use the latest Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome on Windows 10 or macOS. Learn about supported browsers and limitations.
Select Create > Record screen in Microsoft Stream.
When prompted by your browser, select Allow Microsoft Stream (Classic) to use your camera and microphone.
If you select Block, your camera and microphone will be disabled. To enable them, click Lock icon in your browser’s address bar and select Allow next to the appropriate device.
Select or to set up your camera and microphone. If you’re using a USB camera or microphone, make sure it’s plugged in and select it from the menu. You can also turn off your camera and microphone if you don’t wish to include them in your recording.
You’re now ready to start recording!
Record the screen
Select to start recording.
Select which content from your screen you wish to shareвЂ”your entire screen, an application window, or browser tabвЂ”then clickвЂЇShare. To include audio from your computer in the recording, select the checkbox Share audio.
If you’re using macOS Catalina, you may need to set up screen recording permissions in System Preferences. Learn more about macOS Catalina permissions.
Wait until the countdown for the recording to begin. Once you begin, you’ll see a timer and the time limit.
You can now switch to the application or window you wish to record.
When you’re finished recording, or if you want to take a break, switch back to the Microsoft Stream (Classic) screen recorder tab in your browser.
SelectвЂЇ вЂЇto pause recording the screen, audio, and camera at any time. Select to Resume.
When you’re finished, select Next to review your recording.
Review the recording
On this page, select the Play button to review the recording. SelectвЂЇRecord againвЂЇif you’re not satisfied and want to try again.
When you’re satisfied with your recording, select Upload to Stream to continue to the next step.
If you want to trim the video, you can do so after uploading and processing the recording.
Upload screen recording
On this page, your video will start uploading to Stream. While you wait, you can:
Monitor the uploading progress
Fill in the video name, description, and language in the details section
When published, everyone in your company will have permission to view your video. To make the video visible only to yourself, deselect this checkbox:вЂЇAllow everyone in your company to watch this video
To set custom permissions, groups, channels, and other options, clickвЂЇUpdate video details
After the upload is complete, you can either publish or save, as follows:
a. ClickвЂЇPublish. Your video is now ready! Select Go to Video to go to the video page on Stream (Classic) and watch or share your video. After processing is complete, you can also trim your video by selecting theвЂЇMore actionsвЂЇmenu , then clickвЂЇTrim video.
b. ClickвЂЇSave as draft if you’re not yet ready to publish your video. Your video will be saved to My Content > Videos in Stream, from where you can publish it at any time.
Supported browsers and limitations
Screen Recorder works on the following browsers:
Safari on MacOS is not supported
Microsoft Stream (Classic) Mobile on iOS and Android is not supported in mobile browsers
Recording system audio is available only on Windows, not macOS
Including the camera in the recording is available only when recording the entire screen, not when recording an application window or browser tab.
Screen recordings are limited to a maximum length of 15 minutes. For longer content, break up your video into shorter segments.

Screencast a lesson as a way to engage students both in the classroom and when teaching remotely. A screencast is, essentially, a recording of your computer screen — and you — with audio narration over the top.
This means taking what you might normally teach in class and putting it on screen for the class to see as you cover a subject. It can now be done and viewed from anywhere, making it an idea tool for remote learning or a flipped classroom.
A screencast allows teachers to incorporate rich media, such as images, text, and video, or work through problems, all as if the student were being taught one-on-one. And since this is all recorded, students are able to go at their own pace and repeat anything they need to take a second pass at.
So while a screencast is clearly a valuable tool, how do you screencast a lesson?
Best screencast software
The first step, if you want to screencast a lesson, is to get a software that will do that. This means something that will capture a video of your screen and allow you to record audio over the visuals. Ideally, this will also let you edit so you can cut out any mistakes, long pauses, or anything not connected to the lesson.
This software works a bit like a screenshot but with much more depth since you have video, audio, text, and editing options in many cases. Combine this with a webcam and you’re able to have students see your face, in a box in the corner, as you work through the lesson — making it far more life-like and immersive. You can also combine a document camera if you want to do real-world experiments or use physical documents — great for grading homework one-on-one.
Screencast-o-matic is a great option as it’s specifically built for this task. It works across a range of devices, allowing you to record and view on differing devices, ideal for students who might want to view the screencast from a smartphone. This includes video and image screen recording as well as editing. You can even blur parts of images, add graphics, and record from multiple cameras at once.
A free version is available as well as a paid plan, with more premium features, however, as a way to get started, this offers the best combination of ease of use and helpful tools.
How to screencast a lesson
Once you’ve got your screencast software you’ll need to first plan your lesson. Some may want to rehearse before beginning so everything runs smoothly. Others may prefer to work it out on the fly and potentially spend more time editing later – it really comes down to what works best for you.

Once you’ve setup an account and logged into your software, you’ll be able to get recording. It pays to have all the windows open you need before you get started. Similarly it’s a good idea to close anything not needed to make sure you maximize memory available to the recording software, so you get the smoothest end result.
For the recording itself be sure you’re in a quiet place and you have minimal distractions in your background when recording. Equally, make sure your computer’s home screen is clear so there aren’t distractions should that pop up when moving between windows.
It can pay to have an external microphone, or decent headphones, if you want to your voice as clear as possible. Some people script their screencast for truly smooth flow, but sometimes trial and error is good to see what works for you.
Remember to turn off any notifications so there aren’t distracting pop-ups during your screencast.
When picking the resolution size it’s worth noting that while you can record in 1080p, a 720p version will be more than enough and helps to keep file size smaller, making it more manageable for all devices.
Once you’re done, be sure to save the video and share it in MP4 format so that it can be viewed on most devices. Even better is to upload to YouTube so you know it’ll be easily accessible no matter what devices are being used to view it. This can also make inserting it into an LMS, such as Google Classroom, easier.
Best Tips To Screencast A Lesson
Record audio separately
While it can be easy to record audio as you work through what’s on screen, it may actually save you more time to record the audio afterward as this allows you to re-edit and make changes to what you’re saying without have to re-record the video processes too.
Don’t be afraid to cut significantly in the editing process. The key to sustained engagement is minimalism that gets the point across without any time-wasting waffle. Think about your own viewing preferences and how you often appreciate getting quickly to the crux of the matter.
Bookend your videos
A short intro and outro to give your screencast a more professional feel is a useful touch. Give a 15-second or so intro and outro to help settle students into what’s going to happen and, in the case of outro, to know what they’re required to do next.

You can use Panopto to record a lecture, software demonstration or other screencast video. It’s easy to do from any almost computer that has a microphone.
- When you open the Panopto recorder from Canvas or from your Panopto folder, you’ll see the main screen for the Panopto recorder (Windows version shown below). You can use this to record what’s on your computer screen along with voice or camera.
- Panopto will use your computer’s built in camera and microphone by default. If you don’t want to record audio, video, or both, select ‘None’ from the dropdown menu.
- Start speaking to test your microphone. You should see green lights appear under the ‘Audio’ source selection.
- ‘Capture main screen’ will be selected by default. This will record whatever you are doing on your computer screen.
- ‘Capture PowerPoint’ will be selected by default. This will allow you to record PowerPoint presentations.
- Open any files or programs that you want to include in your recording.
- When you have everything ready, click Record. Switch over to PowerPoint (or whatever you want to record) and begin your presentation.
- In order to properly record PowerPoint presentations, after you have launched PowerPoint, you must have it in full screen presentation mode.
- When you have finished your presentation, switch back to the Panopto recorder and click Stop.
- Name the recording file.
- Click Upload to send the recording to Panopto, or click Delete and record again if there were any issues with the recording.
- The recording will be uploaded to your Canvas site and available to your students through the Class Recordings area.

A screencast is a recording of what is on your computer screen, often containing audio narration . Another name for a screencast is video screen capture or screen recording. Screencasts are useful for how-to-guides, narrated demonstrations, course tours, tutorials, slideshows, etc.
You can record screencasts directly from your My Media page. To do this, you will need to install the My Media application called Kaltura Capture. Once you have made your recording, you can upload to your My Media library and embed it anywhere the Moodle text editor is available.

How to create a screencast
1. Open Kaltura Capture
From Moodle, click on the User menu in the top right and click My Media.
- From the My Media window, click on Add New and then KalturaCapture.
- If you’ve already installed Kaltura Capture, it will launch automatically. Otherwise, please refer to Moodle My Media – Installing Kaltura Capture.
2. Enable the SCREEN input in the Kaltura Capture recorder
- The Kaltura Capture desktop recorder window (pictured below) will open.
- Check to see if Screen is enabled, it will look blue. If not, select Screen before recording your screencast.
- If you would like to include your webcam in the corner of your recording check to see if Camera is already enabled or select Camera to turn it on.
- If you have multiple screens and want to record only one screen, simply click one of the Screen icons until it becomes grey, this will disable it.
- For an overview of the recording options, please go to How to select the recording options (using Kaltura Capture).
3. Click RED RECORD CIRCLE to start recording
- If you’ve selected Full Screen click the Record button.
- If you’ve selected Select Area click the Select Area button, which will prompt you to select a window size for recording.
- Choose on of the following size options from the drop down menu (it will be easier if you choose one of the predefined sizes) and click Confirm.
- Open the browser window or application that you will be recording.
- Drag your browser window or application window into the dashed lines of the recording window area.
- Resize the browser window or application so it fits inside the recording area. This will be easier than dragging the dashed lines of the recording window out. Note: Using one of the listed sizes makes it easier to re-record, you don’t have to drag out the custom size again.
- Click Confirm when ready.
If you want to resize the recording window to make a custom size, hover over the dashed lines and when an arrow shows up, click and drag to resize.
- Click Confirm and press the Start Recording button.
- A three-second countdown timer will indicate when recording will begin. To ensure that nothing is cut off from the beginning, it is a good idea to wait an extra second before you begin speaking.
- You may pause and resume the recording by pressing COMMAND or CTRL+SHIFT+R.
- You may also draw on your screen by using the annotation tools. Click on the pencil icon to open options. The drawing will appear in the recorded video.
4. Click STOP RECORDING SQUARE to finish recording
- It’s recommended that you pause your video with COMMAND or CTRL+SHIFT+R and then stop it.
- If you know you want to delete your recording and start again you can also click X to cancel.
- Click the square to stop the recording and select Yes, Stop it to move on to reviewing and saving your video.
5. Name & save your recording
- Give your recording a title in the Title field.
- Optionally, you may add a description and tags.
- Clicking SAVE & UPLOAD will upload the recording to My Media and save it in the Kaltura Capture library.
- Clicking SAVE will save it in the Kaltura Capture library where you can upload it to My Media later.
- ImportantNote: DELETE will remove it from your computer. It will not go into your Recycle Bin and can’t be retrieved. Make sure you have either uploaded it into My Media or you would like it to be deleted. Deleting it from My Media will also remove it and can’t be retrieved.
- After uploading the recording to My Media, if you don’t see the recording in your My Media library right away, try clicking the refresh button:

With the rise in popularity of YouTube, TikTok, Udemy, and other platforms that rely on video, everyone is making videos these days. And why not? It’s easy to make with the right set of tools.
A screencast differs slightly from fun videos like TikTok or strictly academic videos on Udemy and YouTube; screencasts aim to teach or demonstrate something. This blog post will guide you through the process of making a screencast on Windows. It’s easier than you think, I promise.
Before we delve into the tutorial, let’s first talk about screencasts next.
What are screencasts?
A screencast, AKA screen recording or screen capture, is a video recorded from the display of your screen that usually has the author narrating what happens on the screen. Like a video screenshot, screencasts are great for demonstrating processes, capturing errors, or sharing knowledge and ideas leisurely or professionally. The popularity of screencasts has increased because of their usefulness and the fact that it’s quite easy to create one.
To make a screencast, all you need are the following:
- 1. Screen recording software.
- 2. Recording materials (PowerPoint, etc.)
- 3. A microphone.
- 4. Optionally, a webcam.
Screencasts are incredibly important, and they are loved by both the teachers and students. With these video recordings, students can listen to lessons over and over, with the ability to pause, rewind, or fast-forward, etc. Also, teachers would no longer need to repeat the same lessons a hundred times daily, thanks to professional screencasts.

Steps for making a screencast quickly
Please follow the steps below to record PowerPoint videos for lecture purposes.
Step 1: Select a screen recorder
To make the screencast, you need a capable screen recording tool. For this, there are tons available, so some of the features you should look out for include:
- A recorder that lets you use different capturing modes depending on the nature of the screencast to be recorded.
- One that features inbuilt video editing functions.
- Easy to share recordings online with one click.
- It must have real-time markup and cursor features, such as mouse cursor display, mouse click effects, and mouse highlight effects.
- Check the recording quality and FPS (frames per second) rating.

With the PowerPoint, PDF, or lecture area displayed on the screen, set the area you want to record and how you wish to capture it. Do this by clicking on the icon on the top left side of the menu. Select an option from the dropdown revealed, and then click the ‘● REC‘ button or press the hotkey (F12) to start/stop the recording.
Step 4: Use a real-time drawing tool

Step 5: Finish the screencast recording
When you are done with the recording, hit the STOP button on the Bandicam window to end it. Your video will now be saved to a designated folder. From the list here, you can double-click it to watch the screencast, delete it, or even edit it with Bandicut. If you are okay with the screencast, Bandicam lets you upload it to YouTube or Vimeo in one click. Alternatively, you could copy it to an external media to view or share with another system.

If you want to share your favorite software tips and PC gaming strategies with friends and family online, you need to look into producing your own indie screencast. Screencasting (recording video of your desktop along with audio narration for sharing with others) is a great tool to make tutorials or just show off your new desktop, app, or website. Businesses big and small offer screencasts all the time to demonstrate the strengths of their software products, but figuring out how to record your screen on the cheap can be a bit of a hassle.
Screencasting requires specialized software and has its own rules and best practices that take time to pick up on your own. So we’ve put together a short guide that should get you recording, editing, and broadcasting slick screencasts straight from your PC in no time.
To get started, you can download some free screencasting tools from places like Screencast-O-Matic and Jing. But be aware that these sites and others like them will try to push you to pay for software by limiting the length and file size of your free screencasts. Still, if you don’t need to record particularly long screencasts, free is free, and their tools are a great way to get started with screencasting.

If you want to get more serious with your recordings, you’ll need to pay for an upgrade to a full screencasting program of some kind. The best paid screencasting tool depends on what platform you prefer: Linux users have few options outside of browser-based recording tools like Screenr, but Windows and Mac users can find more choices.
CamStudio is also free and easy to use. Windows users should first consider this pair of free, open-source apps: Wink and CamStudio; both are Windows-only (and a little bit buggy), but they can record audio and video pretty handily. Mac users must (as usual) shell out a bit more for screencasting software like ScreenFlow, which costs $99 (as of 7/24/2012). You get what you pay for, though, because the app includes a ton of video and audio editing tools along with free video transition clips for cutting between takes.
Depending on what exactly you want to broadcast, various specialized tools can also help you out. For example, if you’re looking to make machinima and need to screencast yourself playing PC games, a video capture tool specifically for your game of choice may exist. Valve recently released Source Filmmaker, a free tool that allows you to capture video from any of its source engine games (including Team Fortress 2 and any of the Half-Life or Portal games); and anyone who plays World of Warcraft on a Mac will find a built-in screen recording tool in their game settings menu.
Screencasting Tips and Tricks
While each app works slightly differently, generally you need to select the screen area you want to capture and press the record button to start capturing video. Sound easy? It is; what sets your video apart from others isn’t the software you use so much as the preparation you do before you start screencasting.
The easiest way to up your screencasting game is by making sure your audio levels are sensible before you get started. Most screencasting apps will record both “environmental” sounds from your PC and external sounds from your microphone. Before you start recording for real, do a few test runs and play them back to make sure your audio levels are high quality and easy to hear.
Though it’s possible to record voiceover using your computer’s built-in mic, you really should spring for a pair of headphones with an attached microphone to help stabilize your audio; gaming headsets like the Razer Tiamat are great for this purpose. While audio settings will vary from app to app, you’ll generally want to make sure that your normal speaking voice registers clearly without your mic hissing and popping if you get excited or speak up a little.

Once your own audio is stabilized, hop into your recording software and adjust the recording volumes of system sounds from your PC. If you’re producing machinima you should obviously just turn off your PC sound effects entirely, but if you’re screencasting a tutorial or commenting on a video game, you want your PC sounds to be audible (yet as quiet as possible, to avoid distracting the viewer from the melodic sound of your voice).
Of course, a high-quality recording is just one part of producing a great screencast. To make your screencasts appear polished and professional, you’ll want to lay out a plan before you get started. We’ve produced a lot of screencasts and editorial videos here at PCWorld, so trust me when I say you should always have at least a general outline of your task and what you’re going to talk about before you press the record button. Ideally, you should take the time to script out your whole screencast before you get started. You don’t need to slavishly memorize the whole thing, but you’ll be surprised how much having a plan for what to say when will keep you on track and cut down on the “umms” and “errrs” that slip out of your mouth while you think about what to say.
Finally, try to keep your PC workspace just as organized as your plan for the video. Organize any files you’ll need into specifically labeled folders (I like to name mine with a “mm/dd Screencast” format inside of a larger screencast folder), and open any apps you’ll be using before you begin. Not only will such organizing make your desktop look a bit nicer on film, it will make it easy for you to find resources while you record. And though this step may seem unnecessary, trying to remember where your files are while continuing to talk into your mic often leads to awkward fumbling in your directory structure and forces you to start your take over again.
Putting It Online
Once your video is recorded and edited, you’ll want to put it online. You can obviously post your videos to hosting sites like YouTube and Vimeo, but many screencast apps allow you– automatically–to export your videos and post links to social networks like Twitter. The easiest way to get better at screencasting is to get feedback, so try to distribute your videos as widely as possible.

Record gameplay and create video tutorials on Windows 10
Sometimes, the only way to explain something is to show how it’s done. For those times, recording a screencast can be very helpful. The built-in Xbox app for Windows 10 has a tool called the Game Bar that can be used to capture what’s happening on your screen at any time.
Instructions in this article apply exclusively to Window 10.
What Is a Screencast?
A screencast is a recorded video of your Windows desktop. They are often used to create instructional videos for how to carry out a set of actions inside a program. If you wanted to teach someone how to convert a document in Microsoft Word from DOCX to DOC, for example, you could record a screencast of you going through the steps.
The Xbox Game Bar allows you to do just that. Although Game Bar is designed to record gameplay for PC games, it can be used for recording other apps as well. Recordings can then be shared to platforms like YouTube, Twitch, and the Xbox network.
Unfortunately, there are some limitations. The Game Bar can’t capture your entire desktop; the Windows taskbar is omitted. It will only work inside a single program at a time, and there may be programs for which the record feature doesn’t work at all.
Older versions of Windows do not provide a way to record screencasts, so you must rely on third-party hardware or software.
How to Record a Screencast on Windows 10
To record your screen with the Windows 10 Game Bar:
Type game bar settings in the Windows search box and select Game bar settings.
Make sure the toggle switch under Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcasts using Game bar is set to On.
You can set keyboard shortcuts for recording video and taking screenshots on this screen.
Type xbox in the Windows search box and select Xbox Console Companion.
After the Xbox app launches, press Windows key + G to bring up the Game Bar.
The Xbox Console Companion app must remain open and maximized to record your screen with the Game Bar.
Select Record (the white circle) under Broadcast & Capture in the top-left corner to begin recording your screen.
If you do not see the Broadcast & Capture window, select the Web cam icon at the top of the screen next to the clock.
A red dot will appear in the top-right of the screen along with a timer and two other icons. Select the Stop recording icon (the white square) to end recording. Select the microphone icon to enable/disable sound recording.
The Game Bar will record sounds coming from your computer (such as music), but it will not record external sounds such as your voice.
To view your recordings, press Windows key + G to bring up the Game Bar and select Show all captures under Broadcast & Capture.
Select Open file location under a video to view the folder containing the file.
How to Make Adjustments to Your Video
You can access and edit your screencasts from the Xbox Console Companion app. Select the Captures tab on the left side (it looks like a film cell with a game controller in front of it) to see all your recorded clips. Each video will automatically be titled with the name of the file you recorded, the program name, and the date and time.
Select the video you want to use and it will expand within the Xbox app so that you can play it. Select Trim if there are bits you’d like to edit out. You can also delete, rename, or upload the video to the Xbox network. To view the file location, select Open folder.
Game Bar screen recordings are saved to This PC > Videos > Captures by default. To access your screencasts without opening the Game Bar or Xbox app, press Windows Key + E on your keyboard to open Windows 10’s File Explorer, then select Videos in the left panel and double-click the Captures folder.
Videos recorded with the Game Bar can be quite large. If you want greater control over file size, download a screencast program with more advanced features.
With online video taking-off, you may have noticed that many folks are using screencasting tools to create videos rather than actual videos. If you do a search on Youtube for “SEO” videos, you will find that at least half of them are actually screencasts walking users through various lessons and techniques. Clearly we know about Camstasia which is an absolutely excellent software to have for screencasts. In addition, I have used Adobe’s Captivate software and found that it is also an excellent program for creating demonstration videos and screencasts.

I thought I’d share a few screencasting tools for those of you looking for free alternatives to Camstasia and Captivate. There are both tools for PC and Mac users as well as a few Java applications.
We published a post a few months back to a free Camtasia download for version 3 which is fully-functional and still a great tool for creating screencast videos. With this fully functional version, you can also upgrade to version 5 license for only $149. However, version 3 is still a very robust and excellent product.
CamStudio is a nice capture program that records all screen and audio activity and creates standard .avi files. CamStudio has its own built-in SWF Producer and can turn those .avi files you converted into stream-friendly Flash video .swf files. CamStudio uses their own lossless codec that produces nice, clear results all the while at a smaller file size than most other popular codecs (so we’re told).
CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)

Copernicus is for you Mac people out there. It prides itself on being very fast allowing the program to record directly to your RAM for super fast access. Use it to easily create screenshots or simple how-to movies. Copernicus is perfect for taking several screenshots. A special feature allows you to save directly to RAM, increasing movie frame rates significantly for shorter movies. Copernicus only captures pictures and video. Unfortunately, there is no support for recording audio.
Screencast-o-Matic is an online application that creates video recordings all from your browser. Currently the product is in Beta.
This really is a simple tool to use with options of creating titles, descriptions, notes at certain times in the video, and even allowing comments and making the screencast searchable. Screencast is often a good tool to demonstrate the functionality of an application. However most people find it difficult or complicated to create your own screencast and add custom text/annotation to it. Download and install Wink on your Windows platform [currently Wink supports only Windows 98, 2000 and XP].
1. Open Wink software and create new Wink project (File -> New). The project wizard window will show up.
2. Check the box “Start by capturing screenshots“, “Hide Wink Window“. In the dropdown bar, select “Screen“. Enter the region (screen size) that you want to capture and the timeframe of the screencast. Click OK.
3. The next screen will show you the hotkey to start the screen capturing. Shortcut keys that you have to remember are Alt + Pause, and Shift + Pause (key near scroll lock button on your keyboard). Click on the “Minimize To Tray” button to minimize the Wink window to the system tray.
4. Press ALT + PAUSE to start recording. Once the screencasting is started, you will be able to see changes in the Wink icon in the system tray.
5. Do all your demo on your screen. Once you are done, click ALT + PAUSE again to stop.
6. Right click the Wink icon and select Finish Capture to complete the project.
7. You should now see the entire frames of your screencast as thumbnail images at bottom of the Wink window .
8. Select the frame in which you want to add the text, images, preset shapes from the properties bar .
9. Preview the frame in which you have added text and preset shape to it.
10. Once you have completed all your editing, we will now configure it to be saved as .swf format. Go to Property -> Settings. Select Macromedia Flash (*.swf) in the Output File Type.
11. Select Project -> Render to save the file.
12. You should now see the output file as swf format. You can also save the project as PDF or PostScript format

Reporting bugs to your engineering team. Demoing a new website. Showing off skills on a new video game. Teaching a webinar with a screencast. Training a client. There are many reasons why creators record their screens and showcase their digital workflows.
However, most viewers can process what’s happening on a screen faster than someone can navigate the web. As a result, watching a screencast in regular speed will likely seem boring and slow. Increase the tempo of your screencast video to cut to the chase and keep your viewer watching until the end of the video.
In this article, I’ll explain how to speed up a screencast using a free online tool called Kapwing. I recommend Kapwing because it’s free and works on any kind of device. Kapwing’s Studio allows creators to change the speed of an MP4, crop, or annotate the screencast with shapes and text.
Step 1: Open Kapwing Studio
Start by going to the Kapwing homepage and clicking “Get Started.” This button will take you to the main video editing Studio.
Step 2: Upload Screencast
From the landing page, you’ll have an option to upload a video or import a video from YouTube or another URL. Start by uploading your screencast.
I uploaded a mobile screencast by dragging-and-dropping the MP4 file. I had recorded this video on my iPhone, then Airdropped it to my Mac computer.
Step 3: Increase Speed
Once your video uploads to the online editor, click on the video layer and find the “Speed” tool in the right-hand panel. Click the “+” button to speed the video up or the “-” button to slow it down. The video preview will update to show the screencast sped up or in hyperspeed, depending on the amount of increase.
The increments allow you to make your video slightly faster or double or quadruple the speed. Adjust the tempo according to the action in the video.
Step 4: Add Annotations, Voiceovers, or Other Edits
Now that you have sped up the video, make sure it looks right before clicking “Publish.” Explore Kapwing’s other tools, like the ability to add text, shapes, or a voiceover or background music. You can trim out the beginning or end of the video to remove excess footage, crop to focus on one part of the screen (like the red bar at the top), or search for a device image to frame the screencast and bring it to life.

You can also add timed text annotations using the “Timeline” button to highlight a certain feature on the screen or put in captions.
Creators can choose to export their edited video as an MP4 or as a GIF by going to Settings > GIF.
Step 5: Publish and Share
Once your video preview looks right, click “Publish” to process the sped up video. Kapwing will take a few moments to process the MP4, then return the file to you. You can share it on social media directly, copy the URL to send to coworkers or friends, or download the file to save and publish late.
On the first run with Kapwing, the output video will have a small Kapwing watermark in the corner of the video. Creators can share the video with the watermark or sign in to remove it for free. Here’s an example of the screencast with no watermark:
