How to create a music playlist on an ipad

Want to bring all your favorite songs together in one place? You can cook up playlists for your favorite music and podcasts in iTunes, on your Mac, and on your iPhone or iPad.

You have a healthy collection of music and other content in iTunes or the Apple Music app but don’t always want to listen to an entire album. Sometimes you just want to hear your favorite songs. That’s when you turn to playlists. You can create a playlist in iTunes or Apple’s Music app and sync it with your phone or tablet, or you can create a playlist directly on your mobile device. You can also create multiple playlists for Movies, TV Shows, and Podcasts.

If you’re running macOS Catalina or higher on a Mac, you can use the Apple Music app. Anyone using a Windows PC or an older Mac will use iTunes. Both programs work similarly.

Create a New Playlist

You can create your own playlists a couple of different ways. In iTunes or the Music app, click File > New > Playlist to create a new entry under the Playlists section. Type the name you want to give to your new playlist, such as the name of an artist or genre.

Click on the Songs entry to see your library of individual songs. Find the tracks you want added to the playlist and drag them over to the new playlist entry. Select multiple songs at once using Shift + Click or Ctrl + Click in Windows and Shift + Click or Command + Click on macOS.

Another way to add a song is to right-click on the song, hover over Add to Playlist, and select the playlist. You can also create a playlist if you select the individual songs you want added, then right-click on any of the tracks. Hover over Add to Playlist, then select New Playlist to make the songs appear on the playlist.

You can edit your playlist a number of ways. To remove a song, right-click on it and select Remove from Playlist from the pop-up menu.

You can also rearrange the order of the songs. Select and drag a song up or down in the list. Release your mouse when the song is nestled in its new spot.

Want to add a brief description of the playlist? Right-click on the album art and select Add Description. You can also burn the songs to a CD if you click Burn Playlist to Disc.

Create a Smart Playlist

While playlists must be created and managed manually, a smart playlist is automatically updated as you add music to your library. You can create one of these by opening File > New > Smart Playlist, then selecting the rules the playlist will use.

Keep the content selection as Music, then use the drop-down menus to set the rules for the playlist. The first menu gives you a wide range of choices, including Artist, Album, Composer, Genre, and Year. At the second drop-down menu, you can choose different criteria, such as “contains” or “does not contain.”

Use the open field to enter the name of an artist, album, genre, or other item based on what you chose in the first menu. iTunes automatically tries to predict the name you want. Select the correct name. To add more than one rule, click the + sign. Select a type such as Artist, Album, Genre, or Year. Pick the criteria and then enter information to complete the rule.

When you’re done, make sure the option for Live updating is checked, then click OK. Assuming you didn’t specify a limit for the number or length of items in the list, your playlist automatically grows as you add new music that matches your rules.

Want to get rid of a playlist? Right-click on it and select Delete from Library from the menu, or just select it and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Edit iTunes Automatic Playlists

Notice on the left pane that iTunes has already created some playlists for you from music you’ve purchased, songs with certain elements in common, and music you’ve frequently played. Click one of these playlists to check out the songs.

iTunes manages and continually updates these automatic playlists as you listen to and add more music, but you can change the rules for how they’re modified. Open one of these playlists and click the Edit Rules link under the playlist title.

You can now change some of the criteria for the playlist, such as the duration, type of media, and number of items. Click OK when done for your changes to take effect.

Create Playlists for Movies, TV Shows, or Podcasts

You can also create playlists for TV shows, movies, podcasts, and audiobooks. If you’re on a Windows PC or using an older version of macOS, you can do this in iTunes. Mac users running Catalina or higher can turn to the Podcasts app.

How to create a music playlist on an ipadLet’s do this.

It’s impossible to create smart Apple Music playlists directly on the iPhone. Or rather, it was impossible. Previously, you had to fire up iTunes on your Mac or PC, create a smart playlist there, and then let it sync to your iPhone over iCloud.

Even in iOS 13, this is still the case. But now there’s another way. A new iOS app called Miximum can create smart playlists, and even sync them to the regular Apple Music app. It is, as they say, a game-changer.

Miximum

Miximum comes from developer Mike Clay, who also makes the minimal Cs Music Player (an app with a really excellent name). Miximum builds smart playlists, and lets you save them and play them. It’s actually a pretty good music player in itself, but if you prefer, you can export these playlists to the Apple Music app, and play them from there.

If you go this route, be aware that once a playlist has been saved to the Music app, it is not longer smart. It won’t auto update like a smart playlist that you create in iTunes and sync across. However, if you use Miximum to play your songs, then you can enjoy live updating.

What are smart playlists?

A smart playlist is one that updates itself based on certain criteria. A simple example is a Loved playlist, which would contain all the songs you have loved in Apple Music. If you love a new song, it will automatically appear in the Loved playlist.

How to create a music playlist on an ipadMiximum’s smart playlists are as powerful as those in iTunes.
Photo: Cult of Mac

But things can get a lot more complex if you want them to. Smart playlists allow you to add various criteria to filter your library. You could, for instance, show only songs that have never been played (new music), or songs that have been played over 50 times, but not listened to in the past two years (songs you used to really be into, but haven’t heard for a while).

You can filter on genre, date, composer, song duration, BPM (good for workout mixes), last-skipped date and a ton more. Miximum has all of these criteria, and you can combine them with some clever logic. For instance, you could make a list with songs that are over 140 BPM, and under 160 BPM.

Or you could make a playlist of all songs not by Insane Clown Posse (side note — why the hell do you have Insane Clown Posse songs in your library anyway?).

How to create a smart playlist in Miximum

To be honest, you don’t really need a how to for this. Just launch the app, tap the + New Mix… button, and follow along. The first page lets you give the playlist a name, set a picture, and choose the scope of the playlist by checking either All Songs, or by checking one or more existing playlists.

How to create a music playlist on an ipadAdd your criteria in Miximum.
Photo: Cult of Mac

The second panel is where you build your playlists, by adding and configuring criteria. This is all done with drop-down menus, and in some sections (like BPM), you can type in extra info.

Once you’re done, save the playlist. You can then play it, sync it (pro users only), or edit it.

Get smart

I really like Miximum. It’s easy to use, looks great, is powerful and integrates perfectly with Apple Music. There are some oddities, though. One is that, when you tap the button to play music, the button doesn’t turn into a stop/pause button. There’s no immediate way to stop playback. You must use the native Control Center widget, or long-press the Now Playing banner to reveal a stop button.

How to create a music playlist on an ipadYou can really fine-tune your filters.
Photo: Cult of Mac

Also odd is that the smart playlists don’t sync to Mike Clay’s other app, Cs Music. This is a real shame, as in the short time I’ve been using Cs Music, I have come to love its simplicity. Putting the Miximum playlists in there would make it almost perfect.

You should definitely check out Miximum, and if you like it, go and buy Cs Music.

Apple Music allows you to create, manage and share your playlists with other users, similar to any other major music streaming platform that’s available today. If you are an avid music listener, then there’s a pretty good chance that you have already curated some playlists on your iPhone or iPad, and you might want to share those Apple Music playlists with other people too.

Mastering the art of playlist curation is no easy task as it requires a lot of patience and effort to keep your playlists constantly updated as your music preferences change with time. Regardless, it can be key when it comes to organizing all the songs in your music library and what you want to listen to.

If you’re an Apple Music user who’s pretty good at curating playlists, you might be interested in sharing one or more of your playlists with your friends to impress them. In this tutorial we’ll be discussing exactly how you can share playlists in Apple Music on your iPhone or iPad with friends, family, coworkers, or other people.

How to Share Playlists in Apple Music on iPhone & iPad

Although you don’t need to be an Apple Music subscriber to create and manage playlists on your iPhone or iPad, you will need to pay for the service if you ever want to share your playlists with your friends. So, if you’ve already subscribed to the service, simply follow the steps below to learn how to share a playlist.

Open the default “Music” app from the home screen of your iPhone or iPad.

Head over to the “Library” section within the Music app and tap on “Playlists”.

In the “Playlists” menu, tap on any playlist that you want to share, similar to how we’ve indicated in the screenshot below.

Here, tap on the “triple-dot” icon which is located right above the toggle for shuffle.

The “More” menu will pop up from the bottom of your screen. Simply tap on “Share”.

Now, you’ll notice the option to share your playlist with other iOS users via AirDrop or send your playlist URL on other social networking and messaging platforms.

Additionally, if you’re looking to show off the playlist on your Apple Music profile for your followers to see, simply tap “Edit” at the top-right corner of the screen.

Tap once on the toggle right next to “Show on My Profile and in Search” for making your playlist visible on your profile. Now, just tap “Done” to confirm your action.

That’s pretty much all you need to do in order to share your Apple Music playlists with your friends and other users.

The recipient who receives your shared playlist must also be subscribed to the Apple Music streaming service in order to playback the full song. However, if they aren’t a subscriber, they can still listen to a 30-second preview of each and every song in the playlist, which in most cases should be good enough to get a rough idea of the song.

Considering how Apple is pursuing the idea of socializing music and “Music + Friends” perhaps to compete against the likes of Spotify, we might expect Apple to add more features to the Friends section in the music app down the line. As of now, you’re limited to being able to see what your friends are listening to, view their shared playlists, and following your contacts though.

So, create a playlist in Apple Music and share it away! Curate a great playlist of hits and pass it around, enjoy the music and share that enjoyment with others thanks to the Apple Music service.

Did you share some of your playlists with your friends to show off your impressive playlist curation skills? What do you think about the social features that Apple Music offer? Do let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments section down below.

One of Spotify’s killer features is the ability to share collaborative playlists with other Spotify users. Apple music doesn’t quite take it to that extent, but it is possible to share playlists with your friends using Apple’s music service. In fact, it’s even possible to share one-way editable playlists that dynamically update on the recipient end once it’s added to their Apple Music library. We’ll show you how in this post.

Share an Apple Music playlist on iPhone and iPad

    1) Create a new playlist or select an existing one.

    2) Tap the ellipsis icon on that playlist and select Share.

How to create a music playlist on an ipad

    3) Pick a sharing option like Messages, Mail, or another from your Share Sheet and follow the prompts to send a link to your playlist.

The recipient can open the link, which will open the playlist in Apple Music. They can tap the ellipsis icon to add the playlist to their own Apple Music library.

Once the playlist has been added to the recipient’s Apple Music library, any changes that the creator of the playlist makes will automatically show up on the recipient’s end. For example, you can rearrange the order of songs, you can add or remove tracks, and the playlist will update accordingly. You can also change the playlist cover image, or change the name of the playlist, and those changes, too, will reflect on the recipient end.

As a side note, if the recipient has offline downloading enabled for the entire playlist, then new songs added by the playlist creator will be downloaded on demand when possible.

    Make Smart Playlists in iTunes

In standard playlists, you choose the songs to include and the order of the songs. If you want something a little smarter—for example, a playlist that includes all the songs by an artist or composer or all songs with a certain star rating—and something that automatically updates when new songs are added, create a Smart Playlist.

With Smart Playlists, you set the criteria and iTunes automatically creates a list of songs that match and updates it with new songs every time you add one that matches its parameters.

Smart Playlists can only be created in the desktop version of iTunes, but after you create them there, sync them to your iPhone or iPod Touch.

With the Music app open on your iPad, the easiest way to find music is to type a song, artist, album, or composer name into the Search field in the lower-right corner of the screen.

You can also find songs (or artists, for that matter) without opening the Music app by typing their names in a Spotlight search.

If you’d rather browse your music library, tap the appropriate tab at the bottom of the screen — Playlists, Songs, Artists, Albums, or More — and all items of that type appear. Or, tap the More button to browse Genres, Composers, Podcasts, Audiobooks, and iTunes U content or to connect to a shared library.

Now you can find a song, artist, album, genre, composer, podcast, audiobook, or iTunes U course by either of these methods:

Flicking upward or downward to scroll up and down the list until you find what you’re looking for

Tapping one of the little letters on the right side of the screen to jump to that letter in the list (all categories except Genres)

Then, when you find what you’re looking for, here’s what happens based on which tab is selected:

Playlists: A grid of playlists available on this iPad appears. Tap a playlist and the songs it contains appear in a list, as shown in this image (tap a song to play it):

How to create a music playlist on an ipad

    Songs: The song plays.

If you’re not sure which song you want to listen to, try this: Tap the Shuffle button at the top of the screen (shown in the image). Your iPad then plays songs from your music collection at random.

Artists: A list of artists’ names appears. Tap an artist, and all the albums and songs by that artist appear; tap a song, and it plays.

To see the list of artists, you can either tap the Artists button near the upper-left corner of the screen or tap the Artists tab at the bottom of the screen.

This image is what you see after you tap an artist’s name (in this case, that artist is Bleu, one of Bob’s favorite singer/songwriters):

How to create a music playlist on an ipad

Albums: Albums works pretty much the same way as Artists, except you see a grid of album covers instead of a list of artists. Tap an album, and its contents appear.

To play one of the songs on the album, tap it. To return to the grid of album covers, tap anywhere outside the overlay.

More: Tap More to see Genres, Composers, Podcasts, and Audiobooks.

We handle a good amount of multimedia content, all through certain specific programs for it such as Kodi , MPC-HC, or VLC, among others. These allow us to play both audio and videos, but each one tends to focus a little more on one type of file.

This is the case, for example, of the application that we are going to talk about in these same lines. In fact it is one of the most powerful and used multimedia solutions that we can find in these moments, we refer to VLC Media Player . Well, as many of you may already know first hand, the VLC player allows us to create playlists. However, they are somewhat different from what we are used to on other platforms such as Spotify or YouTube.

VLC focuses more on working with videos than with audio

Keep in mind that in this case a playlist is basically made up of a group of files that we want to play one after the other. So much so that from the start we cannot give a name to this playlist in VLC . At the same time, when we create a new one, we lose the old one. The reason for this method of operation is basically because the program focuses on playing videos.

It is true that the program supports a multitude of audio formats, so it can also function as a music player. But as we say, its main objective is video, so the lists we create are different from what we do on Spotify, for example. Therefore, in the event that we want or need to create a playlist , in addition to saving it for later, let’s see the steps to take.

The first thing we must do is open the VLC player as such so that its main interface appears. Then we place you in the View / Playlist menu, where we have to add the files that we want to include in the playlist that we are creating.

This is something we can achieve by simply dragging music files from Windows File Explorer. Thus, once we have created the playlist, we are in the menu option Medium / Save playlist.

    Create music playlists in VLC

Next we will have to assign a name to the new list, for example depending on the type of music or environment. It will be then that the VLC itself will create the file that will contain the list, all in an XSPF format . So from that point on, in the future whenever we want to play that same playlist, we just have to double click the XSPF file to open it in VLC.

Of course, at this point there are several aspects that we should take into consideration. For example, the files included in it are saved with their name and location in the mentioned XSPF file. If one of the files is moved or renamed, the playlist cannot find or play it. Therefore, most likely, this will return an error .

Also if we change the computer or operating system , the files that are part of the list will have to be saved in the same disk path where they were when it was created. To finish we will say that elements of this type created in VLC do not have access to an online database, as happens in Spotify.

In the last iPod 101 lesson, we learned how to manually create playlists in iTunes. Such playlists definitely have their advantages – they can be the most illogical, eclectic mixes if you so wish… they can be truly personal. However, they have their problems; they can be tedious to create and maintain, and they’re totally static… tastes change.

This is where smart playlists come in. Smart playlists are automatically and dynamically generated based upon certain logical criteria that you specify upon creation of the playlist. A playlist of your highest-rated songs. Songs you haven’t played yet. Piano music between 1825 and 1923. The possibilities are endless. I’ll begin this tutorial by describing several key criteria for smart playlists, and the remainder of the tutorial will consist of several examples of smart playlists that I have created for myself.

    Popular Smart Playlist Criteria:

In iTunes, each song in your library can be “Rated” from 1 to 5 stars. This rating can take place either within iTunes itself or on your third-generation iPod. Any ratings assigned on the iPod will be synchronized up to iTunes the next time your iPod is connected to the computer.

Most people use all 5 stars to indicate how much they “like” a particular song. Because ratings synchronize from the iPod to the computer, however, I choose to reserve the “1-star” rating as a messaging device. If I discover a song for which I need to fix a tag, or for which the quality is horrible (and I’d like to delete it), I tag it with 1 star on my iPod. When I synchronize to iTunes, the song is immediately added to my “Fix or Delete!!” smart playlist (more on this later). I reserve the remainder of the rating levels for their intended purpose.

    Play Counts

iTunes and the iPod keep a record of how many times a song has been played. This is automatic – it requires no work from the user. The playcount is increased by 1 each time a song finishes.

The comment tag is versatile with respect to Smart Playlists. Use it for whatever you wish. Use it for sub-genre. Use it for instrument. Use it for conductor. Tag songs as “Noisy,” “Quiet,” or “Relaxing.” Tag them with themes: “Love,” “Children,” or “Death.”

You can use several categories in the same comment field. For example, tag a song as “Quiet, Love, Piano.” All smart playlists will continue to function properly.

Soon, I’ll show you one of the ways I use the comment tag.

    “Checked” Status

Immediately to the left of each song title in your library, there lies a checkbox. If this checkbox is unchecked, iTunes will not play the file unless directly clicked on. Checkbox status can also be used as criteria for Smart Playlists. More on this later.

    Create a new Smart Playlist:

To begin getting creative smart playlists, create an empty one. There are several ways of doing this:

    1. Go to File – Create New Smart Playlist or
    2. Press Control-Alt-N (PC) or Option-Command (Apple)-N (Mac)
    3. Hold down shift (PC) or option (Mac). The “+” button for manual playlists will change to a gear symbol for smart playlists (shown below). Click this symbol.

      Christmas Music

Ok… I admit it. I’m somewhat of a holiday-music nut… but only during the holiday season. I wouldn’t want iTunes to begin playing a Christmas track in July. Smart playlists help me solve this problem in several ways. First, I have “unchecked” all of my Christmas music. Next, I create the following smart playlist:

How to create a music playlist on an ipad

This playlist, as you can see, contains all tracks in my library that are of the “Christmas” genre. Because “Match Only Checked Songs” is unselected, the Christmas songs are allowed to show up. You will see that in all of my other smart playlists, this checkbox is selected, effectively disabling Christmas songs for them.

    Classical – Baroque

I’m also a classical music nut. So much so, that I thought it would be neat to have my music arranged by classical period. Therefore, I tagged my classical music in the “Comment” field with data such as:

    Baroque/Early
    Baroque/Late
    Romantic/Early
    Medieval
    …and so on.

Now, I can create a smart playlist such as the following:

How to create a music playlist on an ipad

…which includes both early and late baroque music. I have similar smart playlists created for all of the classical sub-genres. Neat!

    Fix or Delete!!

This smart playlist takes advantage of the iTunesiPod ratings synchronization that I discussed above. Any song that is tagged with 1 star gets added to this playlist automatically so that I can easily find it and fix its tag or delete it.

How to create a music playlist on an ipad

    Forgotten Favorites

Now we’re getting slightly more advanced. This playlist contains 25 songs that are my least-played favorites (5-star songs). The criterion simply specifies the domain: 5-star songs. The “Limit to” field selects those which have been least recently played. Simple!

Criteria can be added using the “+” symbol. Make a list of all of your “Quiet” pieces over 10 minutes in length. Exclude genres or albums from your smart playlist by adding “Genre” “is not” “xxxxx.” Multi-criteria smart playlists get very interesting, and quite fun to set up.

Apple does not yet support Boolean operators (AND, OR, etc) for added criteria. Currently, all added criteria are treated as if they were preceded by a Boolean AND.

“Live Updating,” when checked, allows iTunes to constantly add to or remove from your Smart Playlist as songs are added or removed from your Library. If you want to “freeze” your Smart Playlists in time, unselect this. For example, you could create a new “Rated Highest” smart playlist every 6 months and compare.

Follow the general strategy of these examples, but have a good time with the flexibility at your fingertips. Yes, logic can be creative! Have fun experimenting with your own custom smart playlists!
