Before working with motion tweens, understand use of the Timeline and editing properties. You can edit individual property keyframes on Stage, in the Property inspector, or using the redesigned Motion Editor.

Animate tweens only symbol instances and text fields. All other object types are wrapped in a symbol when you apply a tween to them. The symbol instance can contain nested symbols, which can themselves be tweened on their own timelines.

The minimal building block in a tween layer is a tween span. A tween span in a tween layer can contain only one symbol instance or text field. The symbol instance is called the target of the tween span. However, a single symbol can contain many objects.

Adding a second symbol or text field to the tween span replaces the original symbol in the tween. Use any of the following methods to change the target object of a tween:

  • Drag a different symbol from the library onto the tween span in the Timeline
  • Use the Modify > Symbol > Swap Symbol command.

You can delete the symbol from a tween layer without removing or breaking the tween. You can then add a different symbol instance to the tween later. You can also change the type of the target symbol or edit the symbol at any time.

When a tween contains motion, a motion path appears on the Stage. The motion path shows the position of the tweened object in each frame. You can edit the motion path on the Stage by dragging its control points. You cannot add a motion guide to a tween/inverse kinematics layer.

    • Paste it onto a tween to swap it out

The types of objects on which you can apply a motion tween are movie clips, graphics and button symbols, and text fields. The properties of these objects that can be tweened includes:

  • 2D X and Y position

    3D Z position (movie clips only)

    2D rotation (around the z-axis)

    3D X, Y, and Z rotation (movie clips only): set the FLA file target as ActionScript 3.0 and Flash Player 10 or higher in the publish settings. Adobe AIR also supports 3D motion.

    Color effects: includes alpha (transparency), brightness, tint, and advanced color settings. Color effects can be tweened only on symbols and TLF text. By tweening these properties, you can make objects appear to fade in or fade from one color to another. To tween a color effect on classic text, convert the text to a symbol.

    Filter properties (filters cannot be applied to graphic symbols)

    You can create a motion tween using one of the following three methods:

    • Create a graphic or instance that you want to tween, and then right-click a frame and select Create Motion Tween.
    • Select the graphic or instance that you want to tween, and select Insert > Motion Tween from the main menu.
    • Create a graphic or instance that you want to tween, and then right-click the instance on the Stage and select Create Motion Tween.

    Use the Create Motion Tween command to animate properties of a symbol instance or text field. The properties range from rotation, scale, transparency, or tint (symbols and TLF text only).     With the object selected on the Stage, set a value for a non-position property, such as alpha (transparency), rotation, or skew. Set the value with the Property inspector or with one of the tools in the Tools panel.

    The current frame of the span becomes a property keyframe.

    You can display different types of property keyframes in tween spans. Right-click (Windows) or Ctrl-click (Macintosh) a tween span and choose View Keyframes > property type from the context menu.

    Scrub the playhead in the Timeline to preview the tween on the Stage.

    • Resultant curve: You can apply eases to individual properties, and see the effects of eases on individual property graphs using the Resultant curve. A resultant curve is a representation of the actual tween.
    • Anchor Points and Control Points: You can isolate and make edits to key sections of a tween using Anchor Points and Control Points.
    • Refined Animations: The Motion Editor is the only way to make certain kinds of animations, such as creating a curved path tween on an individual property by adjusting its Property curve.

    How to create a motion tween in flash

    In this article, it is assumed that you have already created a Motion Tween, and are using the Motion Editor to refine your tween.

    To open the Motion Editor, do the following:

    1. On the Timeline, select the motion tween span you want to refine, and double-click the tween span. You could also right-click on the tween span and select Refine Tween to bring up the Motion Editor.

    The Motion Editor represents Properties of a tween using two-dimensional graphs called Property Curves. These graphs are composited within a grid on the Motion Editor. Each property has its own Property Curve plotted against time on the horizontal axis (from left to right), and the change to the value of a property on vertical axis.

    You can manipulate Motion Tweens by editing Property Curves within Motion Editor. To its end, the Motion Editor facilitates smooth editing of Property Curves, there by allowing you to gain precise control over the tween. You can manipulate a Property Curve by adding property Keyframes or Anchor Points. This allows you to manipulate key parts of the Property Curve, where you want the tween to display transitions for a said Property.

    Take note that the Motion Editor allows you to edit only such properties that can be altered during a tween span. For example, the Quality property of the Gradient Bevel filter can only be assigned one value during a tween span, and hence, cannot be edited using the Motion Editor.

For example, a cat can be transformed into a lion.

The duration property of the Motion object indicates the total number of frames in the motion tween:

    When you reuse ActionScript created by Flash in your own animation, you can keep the name that Flash automatically generates for the tween or you can substitute a different name. If you change the tween name, make sure that you change it throughout the script.

    Alternately, in Flash you can assign a name of your choosing to the target object of the motion tween. Then create the motion tween and copy the script. Whichever naming approach you use, make sure that each Motion object in your ActionScript code has a unique name.

    Please note:
    1. You need to have Flash Player 7.0 installed to view the Flash animation.
    2. Flash MX 2004 must be installed in your system to download the .fla file.

    Steps to follow:

    • Open a new flash file (Ctrl+N).
      New Document window will appear
      Select General panel and choose Type: Flash Document . Press OK.
    • If your timeline window is not open, press (Ctrl+Alt+T).
    • Now you can see a single Layer called “Layer1” in your timeline Window.

    • Select the first frame. Import your image onto stage, upon which you would want to implement motion tween.
      File>Import>Import to Stage, or just press (Ctrl+R).
      Or you can even draw your own object, you can either choose Rectangular tool or Oval tool from the tool box and draw your desired shape.
    • Now select your object on the stage and press F8 to convert this image to a Symbol. Convert to Symbol window will pop-up.
      Name your Symbol what ever you like.
      Select Graphic behavior and press OK.

      Note: You can create motion tween only on symbols. So any object upon which you would want to implement motion tween, First convert the object to a Symbol.

  • Right now your Symbol is in frame1 of Layer1. Select frame 20 and press F6 to insert a new keyframe.
  • Still keeping playhead on frame 20, move your Symbol to any other position other than the present one.
  • Select any frame between, 2 to 19 and select Motion from the tween pop-up menu in the Property inspector. Now your Layer will look something like the one shown below.

  • Now press ( Ctrl+Enter ) to view your motion tween.

“Tweening” or “inbetweening,” is how animators get things from one point to another. Adobe Animate has everything you need to create motion between keyframes.

What is tweening?

Animation has always been about the illusion of movement. Tweening is a major part of making that illusion look real. Tweening in animation is a short for inbetweening and it’s the process of generating images that go between keyframes.

Keyframes are the images at the beginning and end of a smooth transition. For example, an animated character could appear to jump from one point to another. That character would be clearly defined in each keyframe, but between those two frames, the figure could look distorted or stretched to fit with the motion and direction.

In the early days of animation, a main animation artist would draw the keyframes and another artist, the inbetweener, would create the frame-by-frame animation between those keyframes. With current computer animation, the process is much easier and much less time- and labour-intensive.

Tweening in Adobe Animate.

Adobe Animate automates the tweening process that, years ago, would have been delegated to an assistant. It enables you to create tweens based on a variety of variables and accommodate many different animation styles. Use Tweens in Animate to move objects along two-dimensional X and Y co-ordinates or make 3D objects rotate along the Z access. Characters and objects in Animate can move with the smoothness of early Flash animation or the flickering blur of classic animation. Objects can morph, stretch or be linked to each other.

Classic Tweens and Motion Tweens.

There are two main types of tweens in Animate: Classic and Motion. Classic Tweens are used in most traditional video-based animations and Motion Tweens are used in interactive animations, like in games or motion graphics.

With both Classic and Motion Tweens, you can add different types of transitions to intermediate frames, including position, rotation, scale, colour and filters. Then modify your transitions with Easing, which modifies how the motion or action is performed.

Control, precision and workflow.

Animate gives you exacting control over how you create your tweens. Each frame on the animation timeline is numbered, so you know exactly where you’re making changes, how long transitions last and where the first and last frame of each transition is. Changes can be linear, slow or fast. They can also ramp up or ramp down during a transition and conform to other parameters you set about how motion works in your animation.

Tweens, like other elements in Adobe Creative Cloud, are easy to move from one animation app to another. You can save tweens as presets for re-use and mix and match already existing animation assets for future projects.

Adobe Animate offers several ways to use sound. Make sounds that play continuously, independent of the Timeline, or use the Timeline to synchronize animation to a sound track. Add sounds to buttons to make them more interactive, and make sounds fade in and out for a more polished sound track.

There are two types of sounds in Animate: event sounds and stream sounds. An event sound must download completely before it begins playing, and it continues playing until explicitly stopped. Stream sounds begin playing as soon as enough data for the first few frames has been downloaded; stream sounds are synchronized to the Timeline for playing on a website.

If you are creating Animate content for mobile devices, Animate also lets you include device sounds in your published SWF file. Device sounds are encoded in the device’s natively supported audio format, such as MIDI, MFi, or SMAF.

You can use shared libraries to link a sound to multiple documents. You can also use the ActionScript® 2.0 onSoundComplete event or ActionScript® 3.0 soundComplete event to trigger an event based on the completion of a sound.

You can load sounds and control sound playback using prewritten behaviors or media components; the latter also provide a controller for stop, pause, rewind, and so on. You can also use ActionScript 2.0 or 3.0 to load sounds dynamically.

ActionScript 2.0 and ActionScript 1.0 are not supported with Animate.

You place sound files into Animate by importing them into the library or directly importing them to stage.

The File > Import > Import to Library menu option places the audio only in the library, and not on the timeline.

When you import an audio file using File > Import > Import to Stage menu option or by dragging and dropping the audio file directly to the timeline, the audio will be placed on active frame of the active layer. If you drag and drop multiple audio files, only one audio file will be imported because one frame can contain only one audio.

To import audio, use one of the following methods:

  • To import an audio file to library, select File > Import > Import To Library and select the audio file that you want to import.
  • To import an audio file to stage, select File > Import > Import To Stage and select the audio file that you want to import.
  • Drag-and-drop the audio file directly to the stage.

How to create a motion tween in flash

You can also drag a sound from a common library into the library for the current document.

Animate stores sounds in the library along with bitmaps and symbols. You need only one copy of a sound file to use that sound multiple ways in your document.

If you want to share sounds among Animate documents, you can include the sounds in shared libraries.

Sounds can use large amounts of disk space and RAM. However, mp3 sound data is compressed and smaller than WAV or AIFF sound data. Generally, when using WAV or AIFF files, it’s best to use 16-22 kHz mono sounds (stereo uses twice as much data as mono), but Animate can import either 8- or 16-bit sounds at sample rates of 11, 22, or 44 kHz. Sounds recorded in formats that are not multiples of 11 kHz (such as 8, 32, or 96 kHz) are resampled when imported into Animate. Animate can convert sounds to lower sample rates on export.

If you want to add effects to sounds in Animate , it’s best to import 16-bit sounds. If you have limited RAM, keep your sound clips short or work with 8-bit sounds instead of 16‑bit sounds.

To import or play sounds in Animate, pre-installing QuickTime or iTunes is not needed.

Supported sound file formats

You can import the following sound file formats into Animate:

Adobe Sound (.asnd). This is the native sound format of Adobe® Soundbooth™.

You can import these additional sound file formats:

Sound Designer® II (.sd2)

Ogg Vorbis (.ogg, .oga)

The ASND format is a non-destructive audio file format, native to Adobe Soundbooth. ASND files can contain audio data with effects that can be modified later, Soundbooth multitrack sessions, and snapshots that allow you to revert to a previous state of the ASND file. WebGL and HTML5 Canvas doctypes support only MP3 and WAV formats.

Adding a sound directly from your computer to the Timeline

You can import audio directly from your computer over to the Timeline by using any of the following methods:

  • Select File > Import > Import to Stage and select the audio file that you want to import.
  • Drag and drop the audio file to the stage/timeline.

Note that you can only add one audio file at a time. Dragging and dropping multipe audio files will import only one audio file to the timeline.

Some of the best results in Flash can be achieved through the simple techniques of Panning, Zooming, and Fading. Examples have been created in the flash_panzoomfade.zip file in the Downloads section on the right.

Panning

Panning is moving the camera across a wide background and stopping at significant spots where the action is taking place. To pan scenes in Flash, simply create a background image that is significantly larger than the stage. Create a motion tween which moves the image across the visible portion of the stage.

Zooming

Use zooming to bring the camera close to a single object or to widen the visible range to include a larger amount of the content. Zooming in Flash is achieved by using a motion tween and the Free Transform Tool (while holding shift to constrain proportions) and just resizing elements on each layer. Select the frame where you want to start your zoom, right-click the frame and add a Motion Tween. Note that when you are zooming multiple layers you will need to add a motion tween to all layers that you are zooming. Next move the shuttle to the frame at which you want to start the zoom, right-click in each layer at that frame and Insert Keyframe > Scale (so that it doesn’t start zooming prior to that frame). Move the shuttle to the frame where you want your maximum zoom, and select the motion tweens in each layer to be zoomed by holding down the shift key and clicking each tween. Finally, select the Free Transform Tool, hold shift, and increase or decrease the size of the content as needed.

Combine pan and zoom to great effect.

Fades

To fade in or out, simply create a new layer, insert a Blank Keyframe at the location you want to start your fade, and draw a large black rectangle over the entire visible portion of your stage. Right-click the rectangle and Convert to Symbol and name it Fade. You can now use this symbol any time you want to fade in or out in the future. Next, right-click the frame where you want your fade to end and select Insert Frame to extend the black rectangle until that frame. Add a motion tween to the black rectangle frame. Now, you merely change the alpha to 0% or 100% at either end of the tween depending on whether you are fading in or out. To fade in, move the shuttle to the last frame of the tween. In the properties tab under ‘Color Effect’ select ‘Alpha’ from the drop down and move the slider to 0%. Voila, a nice clean fade in.

The Animate Export commands do not store export settings separately with each file, as does the Publish command. (To create all the files you need to put Animate content on the web, use the Publish command.)

Export Movie exports a Animate document to a still-image format, creates a numbered image file for every frame in the document, and exports the sound in a document to a WAV file (Windows only).

Open the Animate document to export, or select the frame or image to export in the current document.

Select File > Export > Export Movie or File > Export > Export Image.

When you save a Animate image as a bitmap GIF, JPEG, PICT (Macintosh), or BMP (Windows) file, the image loses its vector information and is saved with pixel information only. When you export a Animate file in the SWF format, text is encoded as Unicode, providing support for international character sets, including double-byte fonts. Flash Player 6 and later versions support Unicode encoding.

Animate content is exported as sequences and images are exported as individual files. PNG is the only cross-platform bitmap format that supports transparency (as an alpha channel). Some non-bitmap export formats do not support alpha (transparency) effects or mask layers.

I have a MovieClip and I want it to have a motion tween which goes up for 10 frames and then right for 10 frames. What I tried was giving the MovieClip a starting and end position (and then those green motion tween lines appeared) and I tried dragging from the middle of the green line but that gives the motion tween a round shape, it isn’t a straight vertical and then horizontal line, which is what I want.

Is there any way to create a motion tween which goes straight up (vertical) and then horizontal?

I am using Adobe Flash CS5 and actionscript 3.

Using the line tool, you can draw two lines perpendicular to each other (thus forming a right angle). Then, you can copy and paste the line drawing onto your motion tween layer. It will replace your curved path.

Simply set a key frame ( F6 ) in those specific locations with the symbol selected, and then move the symbol to the desired location.

Frame one = key frame F6 the starting position.
frame 10 = key frame again, and then move to the final “up” position
frame 20 = key frame again and then move to the final “right” position.

Then right click on the timeline and add a Classic Tween between the frames.

Make sure you hit F8 to convert any shapes to a movie clip before you set the key frames though or you will get tween elements in your library.

Setting a motion path is generally reserved for more specific “flight” of symbols. You can achieve your effect with simple key frame animation and eliminate the motion path all together.

This lesson will teach you how to create a “motion tween” by taking one shape and moving it to create an animation. Motion tweening is a term used in Macromedia Flash to refer to the transition from one position or location to another.

Before we can create our tween we are going to need the shape that will be used in this Flash animation. First, create a simple oval like the one we have below in frame 1 of the timeline.

Next, select the arrow tool and right click on the oval. Choose Convert to Symbol from the menu. When the conversion pop up appears name the shape My_Shape, select “type:” Graphic and be sure that the centered orientation is chosen from Registration.

Select frame 25 in the timeline window and insert a KeyFrame.

After you have opened a new canvas in Adobe Flash locate the ‘rectangle tool’ in the toolbar at the right hand side of the window. Click on the button and then draw your rectangle onto the white canvas as above.

Next you will need to locate the ‘selection tool’ from the toolbar at the right hand side of the window (it is the black arrow at the top). Now click onto the rectangle you have just drawn and press ‘F8’ to make it into a symbol. Name it whatever you like and press enter.

Now you will need to find and locate the ‘pencil tool’ from the toolbar at the right hand side of the window. Now right at the bottom of the same toolbar is a ‘pencil mode’ button, click on it and select ‘smooth’. Now just draw a wavy line, any type you need.

Now you need to double click the line you have just drawn to select it. The right click and select ‘cut’. The line will disappear but don’t worry we’ll come back to that later.

Next you need to select the rectangle again and right click. Select ‘create motion tween’ and then you will notice that a new layer has been created on the timeline at the bottom of the screen.

Like I said we would, we need the line that you drew back on the canvas. Simply right click on the canvas and select ‘paste’ and you should see something similar to the print screen above. Your rectangle will have connected to the line, creating your custom motion path.

Finally if you look at the timeline at the bottom of the screen and hover over where the blue rectangle ends, you should be able to pull it to make it shorter or longer, this extends or reduces the length of your motion tween. 24 frames = 1 second.

Open Flash animation video software and create a black or navy blue background for your new project. Now you need to right click on the frame 30, appearing at the timeline present above the “Edit” window, and select the “Insert Key Frame” option.

On the timeline, you will see the “Insert New Layer” icon. Click on it and you will be asked to name the new layer. You can name it “Star”. Once you are done with creating the new layer, click on it, and select “Polystar” tool.

Once you are done with setting up star’s properties, you can select the colour of the star, as per your preference. For that purpose, you will have to click the “Fill Colour” box and select the colour of your choice.

Now you can draw the star on the background you created in the first step. For that purpose, click on the background, and pull out the points of the stars, to change the size and shape of the star, as per your needs.

Now you should click the frame 15 of the timeline and change the size of the star, as this will make the star to flicker. Also, if you want the star to spin during the animation process, then you should change the angle of star. Once you are done with changing the size and angle, enter the key frame as you did in the first step.

Now right click the first frame and select “Create Motion Tween”.

I’m trying to create a flash animation of a wing flapping using three keyframes. The first keyframe is at frame 1. I then created a second keyframe at frame 5 by pressing F6, and then I created another keyframe at frame 10 by pressing F6. At frame 5, I rotated the wing so that it is going up. Frame 10 is the same as frame 1.

I right clicked on a frame between frames 5 and 10 and then clicked the first option, “Create Motion Tween”; I then performed the same action on a frame between frames 1 and 5. When I preview or test the movie, there is no transition between the frames. From frame 1 to 5, there is supposed to be a transition of the wing flapping up. From frame 5 to 10, there is supposed to be a transition of the wing flapping downwards to its initial position. Instead, when I test the movie, the wing remains still until frame 5 and instantly goes to its “wing up state” and when it gets to frame 10, instantly goes to its “wing down state”.

Here is what the timeline looks like after I’ve made the changes mentioned above:

I’m using Flash CS4 to make the animation but the tutorial I’m following is using Flash CS3. I know I can use other methods to create the motion tween but I want to know why the method I’m using isn’t working.

I am using Macromedia Flash Professional 8 in this example of a simple way to use motion tweens. Ok here goes.

A. Preparation
1.) Start the Flash program. Once loaded, create a new Flash Document. Note: By default the pixels are set to 550 x 400, i changed mine to 275 x 200.

2.) Speed up the animation by changing the frame rate to 36 fps.

B. Drawing The Object/Adding Frames

1.) Change the background color to black, #000000.

2.) Select the Oval Tool, or click ‘O’ on the keyboard, and draw a circle, while holding SHIFT AND ALT down (holding these keys just make it a perfectly round circle). Try and make the circle around 100 by 100.

3.) Double click the circle and a screen like the one below should replace the previous one (NOTE: You see the circle that should have been drawn, and also the yellow highlighted regions (4 of them), which i will use next.

4.) If your circle wasn’t perfectly round, well in the highlighted regions on the above, change the values of the first column, W and H, to 100 and set the values of the X and Y to 0. (NOTE: Your circle should have moved to the top-left corner of the drawing field.)

5.) Click on frame 50 and press F6 on your keyboard, this will create a keyframe with the exact object(s) of the previous one(in our case 1). Here’s an image to show you where you should be at selecting frame 50, then pressing F6.

C. Creating the Motion Tween

1.) Select frames 1-50, by clicking only ONCE on frame one and dragging to the right until you reach frame 50 (it should be highlighted in black like below).

2.) Right-click the selected frames and select “Create Motion Tween”.

3.) Now click off of the selected items, and click frame 50 alone by clicking on it once, just frame 50. Move the circle so that its location, or X and Y, is 175 by 100.

4.) Click CTRL + ENTER and you should see your circle moving in a diagnal line and keep repeating once the frames are through. NOTE: to stop the repeat(optional, not necessary), use a simple actionscript code such as “Stop();” for frame 50. Image below shows actionscript for frame 50.

NOTE: Make sure in your actionscript window it says layer 1: 50, because 50 is the frame on layer 1 in which you are coding the stop() to stop the repeat.

Introduction: How to Create a Classic Tween in Adobe Animate CC

A Tween is a visual effect found in most kinds of animation software, in specific affiliation with Adobe who branded the name. The effect causes a selected drawing on a digital canvas to move smoothly across the screen. There are three different kinds of Tweens that are capable of creating an automatic transition in a Animation CC document but this instruction focuses on designing a Classic Tweening. A Classic Tween moves in a straight line only from its designated start point to its end point. This is a simple effect but one that every animator learns how to do when they start to use this software. This instruction will show you how to create this effect as well as familiarize you with other tools and functions in Adobe Animate.

Supplies

To create this effect, you will need the Adobe Animate CC application downloaded to your computer. This will cost around twenty-three dollars per month for as long as it is downloaded. This is a link to the adobe website containing all of the available Adobe products including Animate:

As an optional tool, a drawing pad would help to draw more defined objects and have better over a trackpad. I use a 2011 Wacom tablet with compatible software downloaded on my computer.

Step 1: Start Adobe Animate CC

Pull up Adobe Animate on your computer. This will take you to a selection page that will give you several medians to choose from. Click to on Full HD to pull up a new template. This is the typical template for creating an animation and your movie will be in the best resolution.

Step 2: Drawing Your Objects

Select a tool for drawing objects on the canvas. The line tool creates lines that can be attached to one another to form several different shapes. The brush tool can be use to draw more free form shapes and designs.

Step 3: Select the Object to Cut

Once the object has been drawn, click and drag to select the entire object with the selection tool at the top of the tool bar. This will highlight the object in a dark, speckled color indicating that it is selected. Right click and cut the object. This will be used later to be placed in a new scene.

Step 4: New Symbol

Go to the top menu of Adobe Animate and click on Insert. The pull-down menu will have an option that says, “New Symbol.” A save page will appear where that will allow you to change the name of the symbol and the type of symbol that it will be.

Step 5: Adjustments to the Symbol

Change the symbol type from “movie clip” to “graphic. I have Graphics to respond better to being tweened over movie clips. If you plan to make more symbols, it is best to change the name of the symbol that you can easily recognize so that it may be organized in your library. Then select the Ok button. This will take you to a new scene where the functions of the symbol can be edited.

Step 6: Once on the “Sybmbol” Scene.

“Paste in center” the object that you cut earlier to the stage of the new scene. After this, go back to the first scene by selecting the arrow above the canvas.

Step 7: Move the Symbol to the Canvas

Pull up your library to the left of your layout. Your symbol will be in the section under the name that you gave it. Click and hold the symbol name then drag the symbol to the stage. The drawing will appear on the stage surrounded by a blue outline.

Step 8: Add a New Keyframe

In your timeline, create a new key frame by selecting a frame several frames away from the original and right click on the frame to get your selection menu. Select the,” Add Keyframe,” option. Now, a new keyframe identical to the original one will appear in the timeline. Set up the keyframe by dragging the image to another part of the stage. The original keyframe will have the same image but it will be in a different place as the other keyframe image.

Step 9: Creating the Classic Tween

Right click on the grey space in between the keyframes on the timeline. Then click the, “Create Classic Tween,” option and an arrow will appear on the grey bar on the timeline that has now turned purple. You have now created a classic tween. To see this tween in action, select the first keyframe on the timeline and press the enter key or the play button on the timeline to see the image move across the screen to the spot where the image in the other keyframe was.

Step 10: Conclusion

Tweens can serve as an esthetic effect such as moving objects in the background to make objects in the foreground appear to move. This can also be used as a technical effect for moving all of the limbs and facial features on a cartoon person. Similar effects such as motion tweens and shape tween create different changes in the image that also make animating much more simple and time affordable. Many companies use this tool for designing effects on websites and for entertainment purposes to add visual appeal. Knowing this gives you more options on how you draw your work which will reflect well in convincing these companies to hire you. This will be an important tool that you will use in this software and others like it as you enter the animation industry.

Before starting with the actual rotation of an object in 3D, follow the following steps to understand the concept and the basic tools and utilities in Flash CS5 that will be used to go through the tutorial.

    Start Flash CS5 using the shortcut icon from your systems desktop.

Choose ActionScript 3.0 under the Create New area to load a new file that uses Actionscript 3.0 as its basics.

  • Choose SMALL SCREEN from the interface type drop down list. The interface type drop-down is available on the right of the menubar area, refer Figure.
  • Invoke the Rectangle Tool from the Tools panel and create a rectangle in the stage area ( the stage area is the white area in flash where we do all of our artwork). Make sure that the Height of the rectangle is more than its width.

    Select the rectangle from the stage area and choose Window > Transform from the main menubar ; the TRANSFORM options dialog box is displayed, refer Figure.

    The TRANSFORM dialog box is used to transform the selected shape in the stage area. In this case, the options in this dialog box are not highlighted. To make them work we need to transform the selected shape into a movie clip.

    Double-click on the rectangle created in the stage area and choose Modify > New Symbol from the main menubar; the Create New Symbol dialog box is displayed, refer Figure.

    Name the symbol as Box1_mc and choose the OK button; the selected shape is converted into a movie clip.

    The name Box1_mc is followed by mc which means that it is a movieclip. To name a movieclip follow it with ‘mc’, in case of button use ‘btn’. This naming convention help;s a lot while doing actionscripting in flash.

  • Select the Box1_mc movieclip from the stage. Press and hold the ALT key and make a duplicate copy of it. Align them together as shown in Figure.

  • Select the left box and in the TRANSFORM dialog box set Y = -40 under the 3D Rotation area and for the right box set Y = 40 and align them, refer Figure.

    Press CTRL + a to select both the objects in the stage area. Next, try playing with the x, y, and z values under the 3D Rotation area. On doing so, the objects rotate in the 3D world, refer Figure.

    Select the first keyframe in the timeline, right click on the selected frame a flyout is displayed. Next, choose Create Motion Tween from the flyout .

    Move to the last frame and drag it to frame 55 and choose Window > Transform from the main menubar ; the TRANSFORM window is displayed. Try changing the values in this window; the result is displayed on the stage area.

  • To test the animated movie, hold down the CTRL key and press ENTER; a new window is displayed showing the published flash animation.
  • Using this concept and the traditional timeline animation you can animate any shape in 3D by just setting the keyframes .

    Learning how to make a 3D Box using the 3D Rotation Tool in Flash CS4

    To make Pandora’s Box I have to make the box 3D to give the unique visual look to make it successful. I started researching on potential 3D boxes and came across this, the below image represents the type of animated box I want to go for for Pandora’s Box.

    Researching on how to use the 3D tool I came across a online tutorial which gives you a step by step guide on how to make a 3D rotating box.How to create a 3D Box and animate it using the new 3D Tools and Features in Flash CS4.

    Step 1: Create a square shape

    Start by drawing out simple square. Hold down the shift key to constrain the proportions. To change the solid fill to a gradient by going to the color palette, Next remove the stroke, just goto the stroke color picker and choose the None option.

    Make sure the square is in the center of the stage, go to the align panel and click on the horizontal and vertical align buttons.

    Step 2: Position & Convert into a Movie Clip

    Next convert the shape into a movie clip, just right click and select Convert to Symbol… the symbol inside another movie clip and name it 3D Box. Inside the 3D box movie clip is where we’ll the setting up of the 3D layers.

    Step 3: Duplicate Layers for Each Box Side

    Now copy and paste a few of these squares on some new layers and name each copy after a side of the 3D Box such as top, bottom, left and right so you know what you are working with.

    Step 4: Rotate Each Side 90º & Position in Place

    Convert all the frames into motion tweens by selecting them, right clicking and Create Motion Tween. Now start with the top layer and rotate the X axis 90 degrees. You can hold down the shift key to constrain your rotation. Next go inside the motion editor to ensure the rotation was a either a positive value, or a negative one just to make sure everything is set the same.

    Now move the top layer up about half of the way , calculate half the height of the square and move it up so it sets on top. Repeat this process for the bottom layer but this time move it half way down, so again just change the value in the 3D Position and View Panel.

    Starting with left, lets rotate the Y axis 90 degrees and shift it over to the left about half of the width of the square now repeat the same process for the right square.

    Step 5: Test 3D Box Rotation

    Finish all rotating and positioning should be left with a picture frame looking set of rectangles. jump out of the movie clip and goto scene 1. Now select 3D rotation tool and watch the box rotate on its Y axixs

    Step 6: Add Drop Shadow

    Lets select our bottom layer, and lets goto the filters section in the properties panel and licks pick drop shadow to create a illumination of the box.

    Step 7: Animate 3D Box Rotating

    Now using the motion editor to animate the 3D Box and have spin on it Y axis convert it the frames into a motion tween by right clicking on the frame bar and selecting convert to motion tween, So just rotate the box spinning from left to right, can simply change the Rotation Y value to 360 degrees.

    In this Flash R CS3 tutorial, we will create a simple Motion Tween animation with a graphic that we will import as a Movie Clip. Because we want this animation to play continuously, we will place the Movie Clip on Frame 1 on the Timeline for our main movie. The sample website that I am using for this tutorial is my personal website that I am updating. Although you will not be working on the same project as my website, these steps can be applied to any project that needs a simple Motion Tween animation applied to a Movie Clip symbol.

    I started with a “Wizzy Room” graphic that I placed on the bottom layer of the main Timeline which I renamed “background”. Because this Wizzy Room graphic is so full of images, it would be difficult for the visitor to know which areas of the website are clickable without a little help. The purpose of the Motion Tween animation that we will be creating is to draw attention to a clickable area that will work as an email link to open an email message window. We will create the clickable button area in the next tutorial. For now, we will be creating the underlining Tween animation.

    For this Motion Tween animation, we need a small graphic that looks like an envelope. I used the Custom Shape tool (Shape – Envelope 1) in Photoshop R to create the envelope on a transparent layer. We will maintain the transparent layer as we import this small graphic into our Flash movie. Then we will be ready to animate it to appear as a screensaver animation for the computer on the desk in the Wizzy Room.

      We will import our envelope as a Movie Clip. I still have only one frame in the Timeline for the main movie of my website. From the Menubar, click File, Import, Import to Stage.

    In the left box of the Import to Stage dialog box, click on Layer 1 and rename it to “email”. You should now see the options for this layer to the right. We will be animating this graphic, so we will import the layer as a Movie Clip. First, click the radio button next to Bitmap image with editable layer styles. Next, give this Movie Clip an Instance name of “my_email”. Keep the other default settings and click OK.

  • You will find the small envelope graphic at the top left of the Stage. Use the Selection tool to drag the envelope to a position on top of the computer screen. As you do this, the Properties Inspector will display the settings for this Movie Clip. You can see that it is a Movie Clip symbol with an instance name of “my_email”. Also, you will see that you have a new layer, named “email”, in the main Timeline.

    With Motion Guide Tweening you can move an object from one location to another along a specified path.

    Example

    In this example you will learn how to draw a path an object should follow.

    Step 1
    Choose Window > Common Libraries > Graphics. Select the image you want to use. In this example we have used a blue mouse.

    Step 2
    Click on the image and drag it outside the left edge of the Stage.

    Step 3
    Go to Frame 40 in the Timeline. Do this by clicking the gray field below 40. Then right click in this field. Choose Insert Keyframe. Keyframes appear as circles in a frame. This operation duplicates the image.

    Step 4
    Click on the Timeline any place between Frame 1 and Frame 40. Then right click and choose Create Motion Tween.

    Step 5
    Right click on Layer 1 (Click on the layer name, where it says “Layer 1”). Choose Add Motion Guide in the pop-up menu. The Flash program will now insert a motion guide layer on top of layer 1. Motion guide layers are used to draw lines an animated symbol should follow.

    Step 6
    Click on the Motion Guide Layer to make sure it is the active layer (Click on the layer name, where it says “Guide: Layer 1”).

    Step 7
    Click on the Pencil tool in the left toolbox. Set the Pencil Mode to Smooth (in the Options section of the left toolbox).

    Step 8
    Draw a line. Begin on the image and draw a line to the other side of the Stage.

    Step 9
    Go back to Frame 1 in the Timeline. Click on the Arrow tool in the left toolbox. Select the “Snap to Objects” button in the Options section of the left toolbox.

    Step 10
    Place the image with its center on the beginning of the motion guide (the black line you have drawn with the Pencil). The center of the image shows as a +. A black circle appears when the image is snapped to the motion guide. Release the mouse button when the image is snapped to the guide.

    Step 11
    Go to Frame 40. Place the image with its center on the end of the motion guide.

    Step 12
    Choose Control > Test Movie from the top menu to test your Flash movie.

    Is your Flash Movie Playing too Fast?

    You can control this by selecting Modify > Movie from the top menu. A Movie Properties box will show. The Frame Rate field sets how many frames to display per second. Adjust the number to a lower number, and test your movie again.

    The overarching purpose of Flash is to add excitement to static and boring web site design. Although you can still make sparkling web pages with images, HTML code, and a bit of hard work you can’t really create efficient animations that intrigue and excite your visitor.

    Macromedia Flash provides a means for creating these interactive, entertaining web pages and movies by allowing web developers to create animations quickly and efficiently. These animations that Flash is so famous for are created with the use of tweening.

    The basic idea behind tweening is to create animation by taking two points in time and automatically creating an animation to fill in the gap between them.

    Imagine we have a time A that is a circle on the left of the screen and we have a time B that is on the right of the screen. With the use of Flash we can take these two times and have Flash create the animation to get from point A to B.

    Flash would create a “tween” by creating many other points in time to fill in the gaps between A and B. The circle might move 5 pixels to the right for the first increment of time between A and B. Then another 5 pixels and another and another. Eventually we would have a timeline that would slowly move our circle from the left to the right, automatically created by Flash’s tweening!

    Each of these different times that Flash has created to fill the gap in time are called frames. With many Frames you can create animation.

    When you load up the Flash Player it would play these times A through B to create an animation! The great thing about this is all the time it saves for the developer. Instead of having to create 100 different frames of an animation you need only create two and have Macromedia Flash fill in the rest!

    Another bonus to this type of animation creation is that you can do each frame individually if you do not like what Macromedia Flash creates for you.

    Flash animations are created using two main tools from your tweening toolbox: Shape Tween and Motion Tween. A shape tween takes two shapes and creates an animation between them.     • Duplicate symbol allows you to give the ball motion. It can make alterations to the animation already set up which doesn’t affect the original animation.
    • Frames are used to give different movements of the ball. The more frames the more realistic the animation, also the shorter the frames the quicker movements you can give the ball, giving the illusion of the effect of gravity on the animation.
    • When you want to see your animation’s finished product you press ‘ctrl’ and ‘enter’ which opens a new tab showing the animation being played.

    Onion Skin: Shows all the previous frames and the spacing of every single frame, for example 30 frames per second.

    Easing:

    • When an object moves from point A to point B rarely does it move at the same speed. Therefore this is why we have to use the technique of ‘easing in’ and ‘easing out’. The ease represents the sense of gravity and friction in the animation also creating the sense that the ball has some weight.

    Easing in (-100): The tween motion start out slowly, then quickly speed up at the end of its motion.

    Easing out (+100): The tween motion will start out quickly then slow down as it comes to the end of its motion.

    • The default is set to ‘0’ which means that your tween motion will play at a constant rate

    Squashing & Stretching:

    • The effect of squashing and stretching shows the ball’s impact on the ground giving the illusion that the ball is rubbery and has a stretchy material. When the ball hits the ground you squash it as it is hitting the floor, and stretch it as its coming back up.

    Rotating:

    • To make the ball roll you rotate it at point A then move the ball to point B then rotate it again. To make it slow at the end to make it look more realistic.

    Using the methods:

    • To use both methods of easing, squashing and stretching you would make the ball bounce continuously across the screen, to do this you would use the line tool. To make the ball continuously bounce you would create lines in the direction of the ball and connect them using ‘snap to objects’ icon so the flow of the ball stays in the same pattern.
    • When you have created a line in the direction in which you would like the ball to bounce you then hold ‘ctrl’ to create an arch in the line which is realistically how the ball would bounce. When making these arch’s they have to gradually get smaller as if the ball was slowing down due to gravity and weekend force.
    • To make the line which is the path of the ball not visible on the finished product you can use the option ‘guide’ under the ‘layer settings’ and select the option of which the line layer is underneath the ball layer.
    • ‘Create classic tween’ allows your ball to move along you chosen point A to your chosen point B along the path of the line.
    • Rotate the ball at each point as it touches the ground, at the end of each arch, as a ball always rotates after it bounces
    • To make the ball slow down and speed up the motion of it going over in an arch you ‘custom ease in’ to slow it down and ‘custom ease out’ to speed it up. Also add the squash and stretch affect to create a more realistic animation.
