You have to set the RegisterAccount property to true before you connect. The library tries to register the new account and logs in with this account after success (if success).

OnRegistered event is raised when the account was created successful.
OnRegisterError event is called on errors.

Certificate Validation

When you set up and use Cisco Jabber , you may be prompted to validate your server certificates to connect to your services.

Depending on your account setup, you may need to verify server certificates for the following services:

  • SSO IDP certification for SSO deployments

Send Problem Report

Use this procedure to send a problem report using the Cisco Jabber settings.

Tip You can also send a report by tapping the “Send problem report” link in an error message.

Cisco Jabber opens your Email application with a new message that contains a prefilled subject line and attached log files.

Include the time that the problem occurred. Check your Recents list to find that time.

To save battery power and storage space, tap the Detailed Logging switch to turn it off after you no longer need it.

If you cannot sign in, try the following troubleshooting tips.

You can download the latest release of Cisco Jabber for Android from the Google Play Store.

Contact your system administrator if you do not have the address for your company’s Cisco Unified Communications Manager server.

Create a Room

All Rooms > New Room. Complete a Name, Description of room, Type (Public or Restricted), Location. Optionally Add to “My rooms”.   1. Select the New Room button from the Rooms > All Rooms tab.
  2. Complete the following:
    • Enter a unique name for the room which identifies its purpose and ownership.
    • Enter a description, or topic, for the room. Moderators and Administrators may change this description later.
    • Choose a type for the room – either Public, where anyone can join this room, or Restricted where access is granted by administrator or moderators.
    • Choose Automatically Select from the Location box.
    • Search for and select up to 30 moderators to help manage this room. You can add more after the room has been created.
    • Add a password to the room if needed, to allow users to self-join when supplied with the password (Public Rooms) or further screen participants (Restricted).
  3. Click Create.

Managing room members

A room administrator/owner or moderator can manage room settings from within Cisco Jabber.

Right-click on room members to remove them from the room, block them from the room, or mute their chat.

You cannot block or mute other moderators or administrators.

Adding a Contact

To add someone at UB to your contacts:

  1. Search for the person by name or phone number
  2. Once you select their entry, right-click (Windows) or command-click (Mac) the call icon (green icon with a handset) and select Add Contact
  3. Either:
    • Choose the group from the Add group drop down, or
    • Click New group if it is a new group, enter a name for the new group and click Create
  4. Click Add

To add a contact not at UB:

  1. Click the gear menu
  2. Select File >New >Custom contact
  3. Enter the information for the contact
  4. Click Create

To remove a contact from your contacts list:

Click the Contacts tab.

Jabber/XMPP is a decentralised instant messenger using the open source XMPP protocol, there is no central server that could be compromised, the multiple nodes construct a resilient and hard to monitor infrastructure. Dozens of XMPP servers, encryption and its open source nature make XMPP much harder to wiretap or shut down than cloud based Google Hangouts, Yahoo Messenger or Skype, all USA companies known to have a NSA backdoor.

One of Jabber/XMPP main vulnerabilities is that the server you are connected to is not trustworthy, this is a list of XMPP servers with the best privacy policies:

5th July XMPP : Swedish privacy foundation promoting free speech worldwide, in between other services they provide an open XMPP server with Off-The-Record Messaging (OTR) support, hosted in Sweden and with logs tuned off. They warn you that file transfers are not encrypted, only text conversations are.

Calyx Institute : A not for profit privacy and cyber-security foundation running a public Jabber/XMPP server that does not create any records of who you communicate with or keep logs of the content of any communications, this server forces you to use OTR, Off-the-Record Messaging, a cryptographic plugin that stops the server administrator from accessing plain text of your communications.

Dismail.de : Free public server located in Germany, you can register for an account using the web interface or your Jabber client. The privacy policy is very clear about how long for each one of your details are stored, metadata has to be saved for Jabber to work, it would be impossible to communicate with your contacts without saving who they are and your Jabber ID is of course also saved. Personal details like the IP address used to create the account and the files you upload are erased after a month.

Countermail : This is a paid for service from a Sweden based email privacy company that provides the XMPP server xmpp.counternet.com with TLS and SSL encryption only available to email account holders. The username and password are randomly generated, you can not create your own, however, all XMPP clients supports “alias” or “display name” that you can manually set up and this is what other Jabber users will see.

XMPP servers in Tor

OTR.im : Free anonymous Jabber service with a Tor hidden node, connections are encrypted with a Let’s encrypt certificate. This XMPP server is fully encrypted and logs are disabled, except error logs, all that the administrator can see is your hashed password, IP address if you don’t use Tor, offline messages and destination address if your contact is not online. A detailed explanation about the logs and configuration settings are posted on the site.

SystemLi : Jabber server managed by an anti-capitalist tech collective. They do not retain any kind of data and a .onion link is available for those using Tor. To avoid spam accounts registration is only possible with an Internet browser.

Kode.im : A public USA based Jabber server with a Tor address and multi-user chat support. The server only allows ciphers with forward secrecy enabled. Logs are kept to a minimum and they do not include IP address history of any users. Accounts are removed after six months of inactivity.

OnionMessenger : Free Android and web based Jabber messenger that uses Tor to communicate with others. it can be used in conjunction with OMEMO and OpenPGP to encrypt the data stored in your device.

About Jabber/XMPP security

Any IM client that supports the XMPP protocol can interact with other Jabber users, a few of the best know Jabber compatible clients are Pidgin, Thunderbird and Jitsi, they can be used for videocalls and sending files, but always remember that encryption and end to end does not mean that your computer IP is hidden. Jabber will help you protect from wiretapping with encryption but the server you use could log what you do and your contact could find out your home IP if you are not on a proxy or VPN.

Another benefit of Jabber is that the same username and password can be used to connect with the social network Jappix, unlike Facebook, you don’t have to provide your real identity to take part in Jappix. Another way to protect your online privacy is running your own Jabber/XMPP server with a custom logs policy, it is not hard to set up an XMPP server with basic understanding of Unix, search for Prosody or Tigase to find XMPP server software to run.

I included XMPP servers with a clear privacy policy of minimum logging or being offshore, those are the claims that the server administrators make, there is no way to verify any of them. If you are social activist RiseUp and Austici provide anonymous Jabber chat servers for people fighting for world change but they are not on the list because they are strictly for political activists.

Cisco Jabber, part of the NYU Telephone Service, is software that enables NYU employees to make and receive phone calls from an on- or off-campus computer or via a mobile app. It also offers features such as chat and video calls.

Employees can use their NYU office phone number and voicemail with Jabber when they’re away from their desks, making it an essential tool when working remotely.

Download and Set Up Jabber on Mac or Windows

Most employees are automatically authorized to use Jabber on a Mac or Windows computer. Note: If you wish to use Jabber on an iOS or Android device, you’ll need to request a separate account (see below).

  1. Download the Jabber software for Mac or Windows.
  2. Run the Cisco Jabber installer file and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Launch the Jabber software client.
  4. For your first login, enter the following as your ID, then click Continue:
  5. Leave your user name as it appears (your NetID), then enter your NetID password to log in. (For all future logins, you’ll simply use your NetID and password.)
  6. In the menu bar, open Jabber >Preferences to configure options such as how you will connect to audio/video, set your status, connect your NYU Calendar, and more.
    TIP
    : Your camera may be on by default for person-to-person video calls. To change this in the Preferences, click Calls, then, in the “General” tab, deselect “Always start my calls with video.”

Managing Contacts

Contacts and contact lists let you easily organize and access contact information in your Jabber hub for those colleagues you communicate with often.

ADDING A NEW CONTACT

To add a new contact to your Jabber hub:

    In the Jabber hub, select the Menu (gear) icon and choose File > New > Contact .

Search results will appear. (It is best to type the name as completely as possible since Jabber will only display the first 15 matches.)

    Presence lets your colleagues know when your are, and are not, available. Your colleagues can see your status through your status message in their Jabber hub.

    MANUALLY CHANGING YOUR STATUS MESSAGE

    By default, your status message is set to Available. To change your status message:

    1. In the Jabber hub, click your initials in the top left to see your status. Click the > next to your status message.
    2. Select among the available options. The default are Available, Away, Do Not Disturb. Your status is changed to that option.

    ENABLING STATUS UPDATES FOR CALENDAR EVENTS

    If a meeting is scheduled on your calendar, you can have Jabber automatically set your status to “In a meeting “when that meeting begins. To integrate your status message with your calendar:

    1. Click the Menu (gear) icon and select Settings > Calendar.
    2. Select the calendar your want to integrate with your status and click OK .

    ADDING A CUSTOM STATUS MESSAGE

    You can add other status messages to the default list. To add a custom status message:

    1. In the Jabber hub, click your initials in the top left to see your status. Click the > next to your status message.
    2. Select Add Custom Status .
    3. Type the custom status you’d like and select which of the default color status setting you’d like to associate with it.

    The new custom status becomes your current status and is available in the future as a default option in the status drop down menu.

    The Basics

    After logging in, you will see your Contacts. Here, you can save contacts you interact with frequently. You can quickly see if they are available (logged into the system) and just tap their name to interact.

    The circle on the top left (your initials) allows you to access a set of preferences. The icons across the bottom of the screen will display a red number if you have missed a call, or if you have a voicemail that you have not yet played.

    Control Your Availability

    In order to receive calls on your mobile device, you need to have the app running and be logged into it. Here are some tips:

    • We recommend using the “stay signed in” setting for your convenience.
    • If you turn your phone off and on again, you must re-open the Jabber app and sign in to receive calls.
    • If you don’t want to be disturbed on your mobile device, we recommend swiping the app closed instead of signing out. If the app is not actively running, you will not receive calls on the device.
    • If you set your status to “Do Not Disturb” in the app, your desk phone will not ring either.

    Make a Phone Call

    1. Access the keyapd by clicking the “calls” icon and choosing Keypad.
    2. Dial the number you would like to call. Dialing works the same as on your Brown phone. You can dial Brown extensions like 3-5555 as you would on Brown phones. If you dial a number outside Brown, you need to dial ‘8’ first, just like on campus.
    3. Please note, the call will display your Brown work number.

    Manage Voicemail

    1. Access your Voicemail by clicking the voicemail icon. You will see a list of messages with caller name, date, and duration.
    2. To play a voice message, or call a contact back, tap on one of these messages.
    3. Swipe left to delete the message.

    Add a person to your Contact list

    1. Tap the Contacts icon and then the “+” (plus sign) and select “Add Contacts.”
    2. Type the name, username or email address of the person you wish to add to your contact list.
    3. When you have found the contact, select the name and the group you wish to add them to. To add them to your Favorites list toggle the Add to Favorites switch. Then tap Done.

    To add a contact to your Favorites list, Click on the “i” next to the contact. Once in their record, click on the star in the upper right.

    I really like how Thunderbird 15.0 has build in support for populate chat services like Google Talk, Twitter, and XMPP (aka Jabber).

    What I don’t like is that Thunderbird’s support for these is minimal, and when things don’t work it is almost impossible to figure out why.

    Here are two issues I ran into and their solution.

    Jabber/XMPP Accounts seems stuck on “Connecting”

    Before you assume that you ran to the issues I did, try port 5223 rather than port 5222. Port 5223 is the old school “secure” port for XMPP/Jabber. The more modern way is that port 5222 is used, but the server then negotiates a secure connection.

    For me the root cause turned out to be a special feature in how XMPP looks up servers. If a company doesn’t want to open a port on their main server (for example bigcompany.com) they can add a special internet name lookup (DNS Record) saying “my jabber server is really over on the other server). These kind of records are called DNS SRV records.

    Most XMPP clients do this for you automatically, but Thunderbird 15.0 doesn’t do this, fortunately, you can do the same look up yourself and then tell Thunderbird to user the other server instead.

    How to Lookup the Actual XMPP Server for an Account

    Instead of running command line tools, some helpful souls haven put together online tools to find your XMPP server, so that’s what we’ll us:

    1. Open your web browser to https://kingant.net/check_xmpp_dns/.
    2. In the text field under Check DNS SRV records for XMPP, enter the part of your XMPP/Jabber account that happens after the @.

    Click on the Check button.

  • If the results say “ERROR”, then the problem you are having is not due to the SRV record feature, but something else.
  • In the Client records for section of the results, locate the Target column, and copy the value immediately under it.
  • Go back to Thunderbird, choose Tools->Account Settings…”, click on your XMPP account in the left hand ride, and then paste into the Server field.

    Click on OK to close the preferences window.

    How to Fix when You Connect and then are Immediately Disconnected from the XMPP Server

    Once I had done the previous steps to fix server lookup, I immediately found that my account was immediately disconnected.

    After verifying the username and password, I did some investigation and determined that my XMPP/Jabber server has an “invalid” SSL certificate. You may be wondering how a server might have an invalid certificate? The answer is that valid certificates cost money and require a unique internet address for the server. If you are using a free service from a small company, or even an internal server, odds are good that they won’t be springing for an officially signed SSL certificate any time soon.

    All is not lost though, you can tell Thunderbird that you trust the server, and that Thunderbird should also.

    1. In Thunderbird open the Preferences windows.
    2. Click on the Advanced tab.
    3. Click on the Certificates section.
    4. Click on View Certificates.
    5. Click on the Servers tab.
    6. Click on Add Exception….
    7. In the Location: field, delete https:// and enter the server name you looked up the SRV section above. If you got an ERROR when looking up the SRV record, enter the part of your XMPP/Jabber account that happens after the @.
    8. After the server name enter :5222. Be sure and include the colon (:).
    9. Click on Get Certificate
    10. Make sure Permanently Store this Exception is checked.
    11. Click on Confirm this Exception.
    12. Click on OK.

    Good Luck

    With any luck you will now be able able to connect to your Jabber/XMPP server.

    Depending on the server, you may hove to use port 5223 instead of 5222. I had to. Otherwise good HOWTO.

    It’s possible the certificate your XMPP server has was correct, here is why:
    Let’s assume that you are connecting the account [email protected] and that the SRV record for domail.tld points to xmpp.provider.net.

    In this case, the XMPP specification says that the server should send you a valid certificate for “domain.tld”.
    However, you configured Thunderbird to connect directly to xmpp.provider.net, so Thunderbird expects a valid certificate for that hostname, which isn’t the case is the server is correctly configured and sends a valid certificate but for domain.tld.

    (Of course it’s also possible that the certificate was indeed self-signed.)

    Thanks for writing a clear tutorial on how to work around the lack for DNS SRV support in Thunderbird, I’m sure lots of users will find this handy!

    In my case I was dealing with an expired certificate, but good point about the potential mismatch due to pointing at the SRV designated server. The port 5222 vs. 5223 is a good point also, so I will update the How To accordingly.

    Thanks for the tip-off about the certificate being key to “the server has disconnected” message. In my case I needed to add a local CA to the cert store and then it worked beautifully.

    Absolutely no messages on the client-side to help debug that!

    On Mac OS X one has to import the certificate to the keyring and declare it trustworthy prior to import the cert to thunderbird.

    I had previously set up other chat clients (like Adium) on Mac OS X, so I didn’t know that needed to be done even for Thunderbird chat.

The Cisco Jabber DataParser connector converts Cisco Jabber data to an email message format and then imports those items to user mailboxes in Microsoft 365.

    After Cisco Jabber data is stored in user mailboxes, you can apply Microsoft Purview features such as Litigation Hold, eDiscovery, retention policies and retention labels, and communication compliance.     The following overview explains the process of using a data connector to archive Cisco Jabber data in Microsoft 365.

    Your organization works with 17a-4 to set up and configure the Cisco Jabber DataParser.

    On a regular basis, Cisco Jabber items are collected by the DataParser. The DataParser also converts the content of a message to an email message format.

    The Cisco Jabber DataParser connector that you create in the Microsoft Purview compliance portal connects to DataParser and transfers the messages to a secure Azure Storage location in the Microsoft cloud.

    A subfolder in the Inbox folder named Cisco Jabber DataParser is created in the user mailboxes, and the Cisco Jabber items are imported to that folder. The connector determines which mailbox to import items to by using the value of the Email property. Every Cisco Jabber item contains this property, which is populated with the email address of every participant.

    Before you set up a connector

    Create a DataParser account for Microsoft connectors. To do this, contact 17a-4 LLC. You need to sign into this account when you create the connector in Step 1.

    The user who creates the Cisco Jabber DataParser connector in Step 1 (and completes it in Step 3) must be assigned the Data Connector Admin role. This role is required to add connectors on the Data connectors page in the compliance portal. This role is added by default to multiple role groups. For a list of these role groups, see the "Roles in the security and compliance centers" section in Permissions in the Security & Compliance Center. Alternatively, an admin in your organization can create a custom role group, assign the Data Connector Admin role, and then add the appropriate users as members. For instructions, see the "Create a custom role group" section in Permissions in the Microsoft Purview compliance portal.

    This 17a-4 data connector is available in GCC environments in the Microsoft 365 US Government cloud. Third-party applications and services might involve storing, transmitting, and processing your organization's customer data on third-party systems that are outside of the Microsoft 365 infrastructure and therefore are not covered by the Microsoft Purview and data protection commitments. Microsoft makes no representation that use of this product to connect to third-party applications implies that those third-party applications are FEDRAMP compliant.

    Step 1: Set up a Cisco Jabber DataParser connector

    The first step is to access to the Data connectors page in the compliance portal and create a 17a-4 connector for Cisco Jabber data.

    Go to https://compliance.microsoft.com and then click Data connectors > Cisco Jabber DataParser.

    On the Cisco Jabber DataParser product description page, click Add connector.

    On the Terms of service page, click Accept.

    Enter a unique name that identifies the connector and then click Next.

    Sign in to your 17a-4 account and complete the steps in the Cisco Jabber DataParser connection wizard.

    Step 2: Configure the Cisco Jabber DataParser connector

    Work with 17a-4 Support to configure the Cisco Jabber DataParser connector.

    Step 3: Map users

    The Cisco Jabber DataParser connector will automatically map users to their Microsoft 365 email addresses before importing data to Microsoft 365.

    Step 4: Monitor the Cisco Jabber DataParser connector

    After you create a Cisco Jabber DataParser connector, you can view the connector status in the compliance portal.

    Go to https://compliance.microsoft.com and click Data connectors in the left nav.

    Click the Connectors tab and then select the Cisco Jabber DataParser connector that you created to display the flyout page, which contains the properties and information about the connector.

    Under Connector status with source, click the Download log link to open (or save) the status log for the connector. This log contains information about the data that's been imported to the Microsoft cloud. For more information, see View admin logs for data connectors.

    Known issues

    At this time, we don't support importing attachments or items that are larger than 10 MB. Support for larger items will be available at a later date.

    The Calyx Institute operates an experimental free public conferencing server. The server provides chat service using jabber, ( also known as XMPP) the open-standards protocol for instant messages and voice communication. The server is reachable at the address jabber.calyxinstitute.org. It is also reachable via a Tor hidden service (see below for details).

    The server allows in-band registration so you can create an account from within a standard client such as Pidgin or Adium or ChatSecure on Android or Apple iOS.

    Data retention policies

    The server does not create any records of who you communicate with.

    If you choose to access the server via its Tor hidden service then we know virtually nothing about you. We can't know what ISP you use, or even what country you live in.

    StartTLS / SSL encryption is required for all client connections. The server is configured to prefer ephemeral ( Forward Secrecy ) encryption ciphers, but will fall back to AES256-SHA or AES128-GCM-SHA256 if servers or clients don't support the ephemeral flavors.

    Our RSA key size is 4096 bits. In recent years, various security organizations have recommended that RSA key sizes less than 2048 bits be discontinued. In particular the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends using 2048 bit RSA keys until 2030 at which time it predicts they will not be considered strong enough any longer. But really, why wait until 2030 ? We have chosen to skip 2048 bits and have adopted a 4096 bit key size now.

    Tor Hidden Service - So that users can access the server more anonymously, it is also available as a Tor hidden service at the address: ijeeynrc6x2uy5ob.onion If you use XMPP through the .onion address then that makes it much more difficult for observers to know ( through metadata collection or passive observation ) who is connecting to the server. At the moment the only client that we know of that has built-in ability is ChatSecure on Android. It should be possible with just about any client however to direct it to use a tor socks proxy.

    The calyxinstitute.org DNS zone is signed with DNSSEC You can check the status of the chain of trust using the dnsviz tool operated by Sandia National Laboratories.

    We have published DANE/TLSA dns records containing the fingerprint of the SSL certificate used on the server. We are unsure if any XMPP clients actually check the DANE/TLSA records however. Hopefully we will find out more soon.

    The server now forces the use of Off The Record Messaging to further encrypt your private conversations end-to-end. We have already written a guide to using OTR on Mac OS X with Adium.     How do I make a conference call?

    1. Open the Cisco Jabber application. (Make sure your headset is connected.)
    2. Type the phone number or contact name into the search box at the top of the screen.
    3. Click the phone icon/call button to the right of the search box. This will dial the number.
    4. Wait until the recipient answers the call.
    5. In the active call window, click More… at the bottom of the window.
    6. From the menu, select Conference. This will put the caller on hold.
    7. In the active call window, type in another phone number and click the phone icon/call button to the right of the number.
    8. Click the green door icon/enter conference next to the caller’s ID/phone number.
    9. Repeat steps 7-8 and/or add an incoming call. If you have more than a few callers, we recommend using Cisco Webex. For more information on Cisco Webex, see our learning guide .

    How do I add an incoming call to an already active conference call?

    1. In the notification pop-up, click Answer.
    2. In the active call window, click More… at the bottom of the window.
    3. From the menu, select Merge.
    4. Click Conference.
    5. This will place the caller into the conference.

    I've got a user that remotes in from home from time to time and would like to be able to access her work phone (using Jabber) to make calls from the laptop. OS is Windows 10 Pro.

    I've connected a VXi UC headset which works fine as both speaker and mic. It is set as default device in Jabber.

    Is this even possible?

    Building off of John2995's answer, if the user is able to connect to CCM/Presence from home via VPN or Cisco Expressway, then the only other thing that would need to be done is to have Jabber configured to make calls from the computer and selecting that option from within the Jabber client.

    To set the client to make calls from the computer, open Jabber on the workstation and select the phone icon in the bottom left corner of the window. You should see an option to select "Use my computer for calls". If not then you need to configure a device in CCM.

    To configure computer calling from Jabber in CCM, you need to add a Cisco Unified Client Services Framework device in CCM and configure it for the user. Don't forget to also add the device association on the user as well in CCM.

    Yes, she can/does VPN in and Jabber is up and running. The issue is not being able to make/receive phone calls on the laptop. We've tried using the built-in mic/speakers and no go and using a UC headset and it doesn't work either. No dial tone or audio.

    I think this is the issue - there is no option to use the computer for calls - just the desk phone. I'll research configuring the device in CCM.

    Got this sort of working now - for sure on the right track. Adding the Cisco Unified Client Services Framework device in CCM I was then able to see the option to use computer device and can make calls internally from the 'remote' laptop now. Just have to play with internal/external settings now in CCM to get it working 100%.

    Tomorrow jabber.ccc.de will continue its service and be run by a new team of admins from now on.

    jabber.ccc.de will stay available for everyone in the future. The current team of admins will turn its attention towards new projects, though. The members of the CCC as well as many users can be thankful for a decade of voluntary dedication.

    With the chat protocol XMPP commonly known as Jabber decentralized setups can be created, which are much more resistant to failure than centralized systems. The CCC team of admins ran such a server for the past several years at jabber.ccc.de. Unfortunately, this server was so well received it became the de facto central service of the hacker crowd. This is running contrary to the idea we always advocated: Practice decentralization and run many interconnected servers. We therefore wish to combine this announcement of the continuation of jabber.ccc.de with a strong appeal again to run your own jabber servers!

    When our team of admins started to run jabber.ccc.de ten years ago, jabber was rather unknown and running a server required a lot of knowledge, experience and sometimes some luck and patience. Meanwhile plenty of easy to set-up and maintain server implementations exist, and there is no excuse left not to get active yourself.

    A new team of volunteer admins has formed within the CCC. The jabber.ccc.de service will therefore be continued. We nonetheless recommend all users to set up their own, decentralized servers or to obtain accounts on different servers.

    For updates follow @jabbercccde on twitter. The new team will publish detailed information about the new terms and conditions of jabber.ccc.de shortly.

    The temporary discontinuation of the service became necessary since some users have incorrect assumptions about its nature. jabber.ccc.de is a piece of infrastructure that is run by volunteers in their spare time. To use it is a privilege and not a right. To prevent incidents that might trigger another service discontinuation, new rules for the usage of jabber.ccc.de will be introduced and published soon.

    We are using Cisco Jabber for instant messaging, and we are currently manually updating the company contact list by importing from an xml file when we have new changes. Is there some software or a script that would automate this, or at least allow me to kick off an import remotely, so I do not have to touch every computer?

    Full Disclosure: I don't actually use jabber for windows (we use Openfire server with Spark / Pidgin / Adium for clients)

    But from the documentation I linked, it looks like you need a TFTP server that houses a file named jabber-config.xml which will be the global settings for all users, I believe you could specify a contact source at this level. If not there is the group configuration section, which is another level of configuration where you can assign different group and what configs each group receives. It looks like your contacts source can be LDAP/OpenLDAP/Domain Controller and the config file you are manually importing.

    I think it might be nice to use LDAP because then it pulls in the list of AD users and will actually use their photo if in your configuration file you enable the option to display the photo.

    On page 154 it mentions setting up LDAP as the contact source. If that's what you want to use.

    Jabber is part of the VoIP applications at BCIT that offers Presence, Instant Messaging (IM), Voice and Video calls, Voicemail access, and desktop sharing into a single product.

    This quick guide will highlight the steps required to download and install Jabber version 11.9 on any Windows computer.

    Requirements

    You can install Cisco Jabber for Windows on computers with the following specifications

    • Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 or later (32 or 64 bit)
    • 2 Gig RAM
    • DirectX v11 or later

    Jabber installation

    Jabber will be pre-installed on all BCIT Windows computers. If you are setting up Jabber on a BCIT computer, please skip to the Jabber Configuration section now.

    If you are installing Jabber on a Personal computer (other than BCIT’s), start at Step 1.

    1. You will need to have the personal computer activated by completing the online “Jabber Activation” form on the ITS Self Service Portal (under the menu Telecom/Mobile Device) first.
      • Note: Every computer will require its own activation.
      • Ensure that you are aware of your Computer Type and OS version prior to making the request.
      • Once IT Services has activated your computer you will receive an email stating that your Service Request has been completed, you may now proceed to Step 2.

    2. Download the file CiscoJabberWin-Install-11.9.2 [LOOP] to your computer.

    3. Double-click the saved ZIP file to open it.

    4. Double-click the CiscoJabberSetup.msi file to launch the installation.

    Jabber configuration

    This Jabber setup needs to be completed after a new installation of the software or when a Jabber Reset was performed.

    1. If Jabber isn’t open yet, launch it by double-clicking the Jabber icon on your desktop.
    2. In the first screen, enter your BCIT ID (A0xxxxxxx@voip.bcit.ca) and click Continue.
    3. On the second setup screen, ensure your BCIT ID number is in the Username box. Type in your BCIT password, checkmark Automatic sign-in, and click Sign In.
    4. Jabber should now open and you are ready to start!

    Phone connection

    The next step is to ensure you can connect to Phone services. This will allow you to control your Cisco desk phone (take and make calls) using Jabber. By default, Jabber should connect to phone services without any changes. Keep in mind that you should be within reach of your Cisco desk Phone before taking and receiving calls this way. Jabber merely acts as a call controller.

    Jabber can also act as a softphone where your computer’s microphone and speakers are used for audio. In this instance, you do not need to be by your Cisco desk phone to make calls.

    1. Click the bottom left phone icon.2. Select Use my computer for calls.How to create a jabber account3. If connected successfully, the icon will change to a computer. You are now ready to use Jabber for calls from any location.

    Openfire, Jabberd, ejabberd,prosody etc are all standard XMPP (Jabber) servers.

    When setting up a standard XMPP/Jabber account, select XMPP in the Accounts tab.

    In the account set up screen first try entering your username under Jabber ID. The username is almost always like an email address and would look something like [email protected] Enter the password and enable the account. After saving and returning to the accounts page Monal will try to connect. For simple configurations with one server and domain this will automatically work.

It is highly recommended that you check with the XMPP server administrator to determine what the server, port and SSL settings should be. The resource does not matter. Manually enter the new server name and port and enable/disable SSL. Save by returning back to Accounts. Monal should now correctly connect.

    Common quick fixes

    1. If you are not sure about the SSL setting, try once with it on and off. if it works with both, always turn SSL on if it works.

    2. The port is almost always 5222. Some SSL systems require 5223. Normally it is never 5223 unless SSL is also enabled.

    3. It is possible your set up is different. In some configurations, username is just a name without a domain. Check with your IM server administrator to find out how it should be

    I want to use Monal with GTalk at work, where I’m behind a proxy that normally does not allow chatting. However, the GTalk application on my Windows PC manages to log in to GTalk but this login takes a long time (about 2 minutes, while it logs in instantly when not behind the proxy). I have logged the network communication of GTalk in windows using wireshark and noticed at some point GTalk switches to an alternative server that does not seem to be blocked. This server appears to be talkx.l.google.com:443. Entering these settings in the GTalk account in Monal at my iPod still does not make it work (but these settings do work when not behind the proxy). What else could I try? If it works in windows, shouldn’t monal be able to connect also?

    Its possible that my xmpp DNS SRV record discovery code is buggy. I will look at it to make sure it can handle the proxy.

    I have identified the error and fixed this in the next release. I have been able to connect to it on 443

    We use spark im through our network at work. I installed the app, I logged on thru VPN , set up the client and i connected, so cool. I can see everyone on Spark and I can send a messages perfectly but I can’t get replies from users who chat me up? What did I do wrong? I can send but I cannot receive .

    I created an xmpp account with the correct settings, but nothing seems to happen. I don’t see any contacts roster, the Logoff and Reconnect buttons do nothing (except take me to the empty Active Chats window). There are no errors. Looking on the jabberd server, I can see traffic being received and replied to

    Jabber (XMPP) is free and open-source technology broadly used by companies and individuals for communicating via instant messaging. There are numerous Jabber servers open to the public, which can be used as gateways for chatting, file transfers, video calls, and other means of communication.

    For the following guide, we've selected what we think to be the best Jabber clients available for Windows users by taking into account ease of use as well as flexibility toward customization (including plugins): Pidgin, Miranda, Trillian, Jitsi and Gajim. All clients are free to use. To get a better look, scroll down to the end of this article to check out our photo gallery. We've also prepared a video guide to show you how to connect to a server via the Jabber protocol using these five apps.

    Pidgin

    In addition to XMPP, Pidgin supports AIM, Bonjour, Facebook, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, GroupWise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MXit, MySpaceIM, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, Yahoo and Yahoo JAPAN. It can be installed on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Amiga and Meego. You can set up multiple accounts, allow multiple simultaneous logins for the same account from different locations, transfer files, customize fonts and sound alerts, and load different UI themes.

    Also, Pidgin has features for creating chatrooms or joining existing ones, and organizing buddies from the chat list in different groups. You can set up actions to auto-perform when someone sends a message, signs on and off, goes away, is no longer idle, starts typing, and so on, like opening an IM window, showing a notification, sending a message, opening a file or playing sound.

    Besides using a built-in collection of smileys, you can create custom smileys from any local image. Privacy options can be configured to allow or block certain users, and logs with past conversations can be saved to file. There are a bunch of plugins available for auto-accepting file transfers, storing notes, detecting friends who are currently typing to you. Additional plugins can be downloaded from the web to fully customize the IM client.

    Miranda

    Besides Jabber, Miranda supports AIM, GG, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo, Facebook, IAX (Inter-Asterisk Exchange), Netsend and Tlen protocols, among others. It can only be installed on Windows. You can send and receive files, set up a chat room from the current conversation on the spot, create and manage groups for your friends, as well as view a history of all past conversations.

    It's possible to customize various parts of Miranda, such as the list of friends, status bar, avatars, fonts and colors, hotkeys, icons, menus, and sounds. The most attractive feature of this IM is that it supports an extensive range of addons.

    Trillian

    Aside from Jabber, Trillian supports AOL Instant Messenger, Bonjour, Facebook, Google Talk, ICQ, IRC, Yahoo! Messenger, Foursquare, Twitter, IMAP and POP3. It can be installed on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, iOS and Blackberry OS. To be able to use this IM, you have to sign up for a free Trillian account that combines all protocols.

    Trillian has a color-coded system to easily tell apart the different instant messaging services you connect to. It can be personalized with skins and plugins, such as spellchecker, weather monitor and RSS feed reader. You can customize the contact list layout, fonts and chats, create tabbed windows, chat with friends while playing games, control the way notifications appear, perform video calls, transfer files, record and view chat history, and more.

    Jitsi

    Jitsi (formerly known as SIP Communicator) offers support for Jabber, AIM, Facebook, Google Talk, ICQ, ippi, iptel.org, IRC and Yahoo. It can be installed on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Android devices.

    You can log chat history, send and receive files, create and join chat rooms, as well as call phone numbers and encrypt calls (SRTP and ZRTP) to protect your privacy in case you've been intercepted by a hacker.

    It's also possible to make video calls, set up a master password to prevent other PC users from accessing your personal account, generate fingerprints to increase security, and perform desktop streaming.

    Gajim

    Gajim supports only the Jabber protocol. However, it features emoticons, themes and support for a wide range of plugins, such as anti-spam, birthday reminder, Google Translate, offline bookmarks, quick replies, and location setter. You can transfer files, as well as save logs with conversations and synchronize them with the server.

    The xmpp notification platform allows you to deliver notifications from Home Assistant to a Jabber (XMPP) account.

    Configuration

    To enable Jabber notifications in your installation, add the following to your configuration.yaml file:

    Configuration Variables

    Setting the optional parameter name allows multiple notifiers to be created. The default value is notify . The notifier will bind to the service notify.NOTIFIER_NAME .

    The Jabber ID (JID) that will act as origin of the messages. Add your JID including the domain, e.g., [email protected] .

    Resource part of JID, e.g., [email protected] / HA-cabin .

    The password for your given Jabber account.

    The Jabber IDs (JID) that will receive the messages.

    Allow disabling SSL certificate validity check, e.g., self-signed certificate.

    Room’s name (e.g., [email protected] ). If set, send a message to chatroom instead of the recipient.

    Pre Home Assistant 0.81 sleekxmpp was used to connect to XMPP servers. sleekxmpp as of version 1.3.2, does not support > TLS v1. If you are running your own XMPP server (e.g., Prosody, ejabberd) make sure to allow using TLS v1.

    Home Assistant after 0.81 uses slixmpp , which also supports TLS v1.1 and TLS v1.2.

    All Jabber IDs (JID) must include the domain. Make sure that the password matches the account provided as sender.

    You can send text messages and images as well as other files through Jabber.

    Jabber Text Message

    Here are some examples on how to set up a script, that can be run from an automation.

    Number 1 shows a classical, text-only message. The Title is optional, although if omitted, Home-Assistant will be set. To keep it empty set it to "" .

    Jabber Image Message

    You can send images or files from locally stored files or remote web locations via Jabber’s HTTP Upload feature. To send files and images, your jabber server must support XEP_0363.

    Be aware that images are uploaded onto the Jabber server of your provider. They reside there un-encrypted and could be accessed by the server admins. Usually images are deleted after a few days.

    Home Assistant supports TLS encryption to ensure transport encryption. TLS is enforced by default. You can disable it with the tls flag – which is not recommended.

    Number 2 sends only an image, retrieved from the URL. The TLS connection to get the image is also not verified (use with caution).

    Number 3 sends an image from a local path.

    Jabber File Message

    Number 4 sends a text-file, retrieved from Github, renamed to Hass_Cheatsheet.txt to be viewable on a mobile Android device, as most don’t offer any application to view .md files. Optionally you can add a timeout for the HTTP upload in seconds.

    Templating

    Number 5 sends an image retrieved from a URL, and an additional text message with title and message .

    Number 6 sends an image from a templated URL.

    The possible source of a file is prioritized and only one will be picked up. url_template has the highest priority; next is url then path_template and finally if none of them are defined path would be used. path will be used to eliminate file extension guessing for unknown URL downloads. Only the file extension will be left, as Home Assistant changes the filename to a random string for added privacy.

    Thunderbird supports instant messaging and chat using IRC, XMPP, Twitter, and Google Talk.

    To use Chat, you must first create a new account (or configure an existing account) with an online instant messaging or chat provider. Thunderbird currently works with IRC, XMPP, Twitter, and Google Talk.

    In this example we will show IRC, but the process is very similar for Twitter, Google Talk and XMPP.

    Start the New Account Wizard

    At the top of the Thunderbird window, click on the File menu, then click New and then click Chat Account… :

    Enter Username

    For IRC, you will have to enter your IRC server name, e.g. irc.mozilla.org for Mozilla's IRC server.

    For XMPP, you will also have to enter your XMPP server name.

    Enter the password for the service.

    This is not usually needed, so just click Next Continue .

    Next, you will be presented with a Summary screen. Click Finish to finish the wizard and start chatting.

    Connect to your Chat Account

    First make sure that you are online by going to your Chat Status and connecting:

    • click on the Tools menu and then click on Chat status and then Show Accounts…
    • click on the Connect button next to the account you want to go online with

    Click on the Chat Tab next to the Write Tab to start and join conversations.

    Chat is included in Search

    Like any other type of Thunderbird account (e.g. email and RSS), Chat is integrated with search.

    How do I get an account creation code?

    To join InsaneJournal, you need an account creation code. There are two ways to get one:

    1. From an existing InsaneJournal user -- many people hear about InsaneJournal because their friends are using the site. If this is the case for you, go ask one of your friends for a code. They can get one here. This will get you a basic free account.
    2. Purchasing one -- you can purchase a paid account and get access to all the features of InsaneJournal.

    After your paid account expires, your account remains active and you can use it indefinitely. The only thing you lose is access to the extra paid user features. If you're new to InsaneJournal and don't want to pay $20 right away, try it out first with a 2 month account.

    This is lame. Just let me join!

    If you're totally new to the site and just want to sign-up without paying, we understand your frustration. However, many people who find us sign up because a friend referred them.

    Please understand our position, too: InsaneJournal is a community-run website. we discuss all business and development discussions in public. Everybody pitches in. Artists make art, writers write documentation, etc.

    As we've grown, we've encountered a number of problems which this account code scheme addresses:

    • Fewer people understand the site philosophy now and take everybody else's hard work for granted without contributing anything back themselves (code, documentation, art, money, etc.). This extra step in becoming a member of the site helps ensure that people understand the community they're joining.
    • Abusive users create accounts for the sole purpose of leaving one slanderous comment on somebody's journal, only to get banned by that user and never use the account again. This account code process prevents that sort of abuse.
    • Spammers create accounts for the sole purpose of promoting their business and increasing their search engine ranking. This is annoying and the traffic causes site outages. This makes it more difficult for spammers to take advantage of the site and makes them give back if they decide to use the site this way regardless.

    We hope you understand why this is all necessary.

    I personally use Skype as my default IM client and that also integrated with Outlook at home. At work, we use Skype for Business and there Outlook integrates with Skype for Business.

    I recently upgraded my home computer to Office 2016 via our company’s Office 365 licensing and now Skype no longer integrates with Outlook 2016. When I log on with Skype for Business at home, I found out that it now integrates with Outlook instead.

    Do I need the Home or Personal edition of Office 2016 for integration with Skype or can I somehow set which IM client should integrate with Outlook?

    Both Skype and Skype for Business (previously known as Lync), Microsoft Teams as well as Cisco Jabber can integrate with the IM functionality available in Outlook. This means that you can see people's Skype, Teams or Jabber availability, reply to an email via an IM or directly start a call or chat all from within Outlook.

    When you are using Skype or Jabber and then install an Office edition that includes Skype for Business, Skype for Business is set as the default IM client in Windows. Similarly, when you are using Skype for Business and then also install Skype or Jabber afterwards, it will set Skype or Jabber as the default. When you install Teams, it (currently) doesn’t set itself as the default IM client.

    It would have been nice if there was an easy way to select your IM client for Outlook straight from within Outlook or the IM client itself. Sadly, this is not the case, except for Teams, but you can still set it directly via the Registry.

    The Registry key which stores which IM client can integrate with Outlook is:

    Below this key, you'll find several sub keys which represent the IM clients that you have installed on your system (and registered themselves as such).

    In the IM Providers key, you'll see a value called DefaultIMApp . This value should correspond to one of the sub keys. When you change the value of DefaultIMApp , restart Outlook and your new default IM application and Outlook should now use that as the application for IM integration.

    When you want to use Skype for Business as the default, the DefaultIMApp value should be set to Lync as that was the previous name of Skype for Business and that name is still being used in several places for backwards compatibility.

    If you don’t want to modify the Registry yourself, you can download the zip-file below. Within it, you’ll find ready made reg-files to set Skype, Skype for Business (Lync), Communicator or Cisco Jabber as the default IM application. Simply double click the correct reg-file to automatically set the value.

    When you want to use Teams as the default IM client, you can do that directly from within Teams itself. For instructions, see the Microsoft Teams section below.

    Note: Changing the default IM provider also affects the other Office applications of course. For instance, when you use the Contact Card in Backstage or the comment section in Word.

    Teams allows you to set itself as the default IM client directly from within its Settings dialog.

    • Click on your Avatar or initials in the top-right corner-> Settings-> section: General-> enable: Register Teams as the chat app for Office (requires restarting Office applications)

    Note: As expected, this will set the DefaultIMApp Registry value to Teams . The nice thing about this, is that when you don’t like it to be the default anymore, deselecting this option will set your previous chat app as the default again thanks to the PreviousDefaultIMApp value.

    Supported IM clients

    Please realize that you can't simply pick any IM client and expect its integration to work in Outlook or other Office applications. If it doesn't offer any Office integration features, setting this key to that application will disable the Reply with IM, chat, call and on-line availability functions in Outlook.

    Amongst the supported IM clients are: Skype, Skype for Business, Lync, Office Communicator 2007 R2 and Cisco Jabber. The level of integration depends on a combination of the IM client being used and the version of Outlook.

    Note: Windows Messenger got discontinued so setting MSN Messenger as the default is no longer supported.
