How to create a hermione granger costume

Submitted by: About.com’s DIY Fashion Section

Instructions
Maroon and Gold are the colors of Gryffindor house, and you’ll need to show them off on the tie, scarf and robe.

Scarf
Make a Gryffindor scarf, such as the Gryffindor Scarf pattern available in about.com’s DIY Fashion section, or one of Leaky Crafts’ own knit or crochet versions.

Tie
Start out with a gold tie. Use red fabric paint to add the lines on the tie. If you’re using paint and a brush, employ a ruler to help you make straight lines. A fabric pen works much easier in this case and most fabric stores have them in many colors. Make two thick lines, then skip an inch and make a very thin line. Skip another inch and repeat this pattern.

Robes
Make your own Gryffindor Robe in any size using the How-To Gryffindor Robes tutorial available in about.com’s DIY Fashion section, or the Simple Canon Robes tutorial here on Leaky Crafts.

Hair
Hermione’s hair is on the wild side as a child, her puffed wavy and sometimes crinkly locks can be recreated right out of the shower. Hang your head upside down while it’s still wet. Blow dry your hair while scrunching it with your hand. Rub a dime sized amount of styling mousse on your hands before grabbing clumps and pushing them against your head. Use a towel to pat clumps of hair against your head to help curl and dry the hair. Once dry, stand up straight and behold your raging afro. Tame it to a nice Hermione volume with some more styling mousse.

Wand
Any thin stick can be made into a wand. Peel off any bark and use a piece of sandpaper to smooth down the sides of the stick. For a pointed end, use a small knife to whittle the end of the stick. Shaving the end of the stick should be done with adult supervision. Apply a dark or light wood varnish to your smoothed wand.

You could also use about.com DIY Fashion’s Easy Pencil Wand for kids, or one of the many wand tutorials available on Leaky Crafts in the Woodwork and Other Crafts sections, or spring for a toy Harry Potter wand.

Time Turner
The Leaky Cauldron’s Harry Potter Crafts jewelry section has two excellent tutorials available to choose from to make yourself a time turner for your costume.

School Uniform
Look in your local thrift stores for a white button-down shirt and a black or gray vest to wear over it. Wear a pleated black skirt, knee-high socks and black dress shoes.
Mary Janes work nicely for your feet.

Calling all wizards! The best part of this easy DIY Hermione Granger Halloween costume for women is that the products I recommend from Hermione Granger’s outfit can be re-worn in real life to give you the most bang for your buck. Also, real clothes look and feel so much better than cheap, standard Halloween Hermione Granger costumes.

How to create a hermione granger costume

The most well known Hermione Granger outfit is her Gryffindor house uniform at Hogwarts. Luckily, it consists of mostly very standard women’s wardrobe pieces you can either pull from your closet or purchase to put into your closet and wear all over again. Wear this costume for Halloween, a visit to a Harry Potter exhibit, and beyond!

Hermione Granger Halloween Costume for Women

Skirt

The first “must-have” piece of this easy DIY Hermione Granger Halloween costume for women is a wool skirt. I think either grey or black would work, and I have the perfect recommendation for you. J.Crew Factory’s wool blend sidewalk skirt, linked below, is a staple in my closet. I have it in several colors! It’s so comfortable with its elastic waistband and a modest length for business casual wear after you wear your Hermione Granger costume:

Blouse

Next, you will need a standard white button-down blouse for your Hermione costume. If you don’t already have one, again, you can pick up this staple wardrobe piece from J.Crew Factory:

Sweater or Vest

Over the blouse, you should wear a grey sweater or vest with your Harry Potter Hermione costume. I especially love the below sweater from Amazon, which I personally own, as it’s both a bit more stylish than a traditional cardigan and a nice quality, with a bit of a silky feel. I sized up since it’s on the shorter side, and I felt that was the right decision for my DIY Hermione Granger costume.

Alternatively, the below Amazon vest is affordable and very wearable:

Gryffindor Scarf

Now, it’s time to accessorize! This easy DIY Hermione Granger Halloween costume for women wouldn’t be complete without some burgundy and yellow Gryffindor house colors. You can wear a scarf or a tie, but I recommend a scarf because it’s easier to re-wear as a woman after you wear your Hermione costume. Below are some simple, affordable options from Amazon:

Wizard Wand

If you want to have fun with some optional accessories in your easy Hermione Granger costume, I recommend carrying a wizard wand and/or a Harry Potter book. Below are some great options:

Or, you can make your own DIY Harry Potter wands.

That completes your easy DIY Hermione Granger Halloween costume for women, which you can wear again and again beyond Halloween.

If you need another look at the options for the Hermione costume, below is a clickable, shoppable collage:

Bonus: you can also give yourself a Gryffindor-themed manicure!

How to create a hermione granger costume

Hermione is intelligent, practical, and at some times, bossy. I love how much she cares and how hard she always works. This Coolest Hermione Granger Costume is a fairly easy costume to put together because chances are, you already have the parts!

I first wore a white collared blouse (my mom had one) under a black buttoned sweater. You can find the blouse in the school uniform section of a store (because, hey, it is a school uniform you are trying to make!). Depending how cold it is, you can also wear a black sweater-vest instead of a full sweater. The full sweater is more legit, however, to the actual character.(I recommend any regular clothing store would have these items, or you could always make them yourself!)

I printed the Gryffindor logo from the computer (just experiment with sizes to find what looks best on you) and mounted it behind red construction paper, just to make it stiffer and easier to tape (or pin) on my sweater. Or, you don’t have to wear the Gryffindor logo because it is actually on their school robes, not their sweaters. I just wore it to make the costume more recognizable.

Now the important tie. I was fortunate enough to find a red and gold tie from my dad, but if you don’t already have one…. See if you have a plain red tie. You can sew/pin/or even tape gold ribbon (or fabric) in stripes on the tie.

I wore a black pleaded skirt. You can wear gray, but just make sure if you do, your sweater is also gray. I found the skirt in the school uniform section of a regular clothing store. I wore knee-high black socks (again, gray if your other pieces are gray) and black ballet flats.

One of Hermione’s signature traits is her big, bushy, mane of hair from staying up late and studying. My hair is already pretty thick and bushy (partly from staying up late studying, too), but to make yours even bigger, you can brush it with your head down. It will add volume and static electricity. I’ve also heard that teasing your hair will work, but it would take a lot longer. If that fails, I’m afraid you’ll need a wig to get the legit “Hermione mane.” If it will be difficult to keep big and bushy, try spraying it lightly with hairspray. It should be pretty messy; don’t spend forever to make it look nice.

I didn’t carry a wand because this was for a marching band parade. I’d recommend for a wand, though, to find a smooth stick or piece of wood in that shape. I found a wooden dowel that would have worked perfectly.

This is a very easy costume to make and it will sure to get a lot of compliments, even from people who aren’t Harry Potter nerds!

Louisa loves Harry Potter and so do we. She is reading the Sorcerer’s Stone for the 4th time right now. Hermione is so smart and brave and I was very happy that she chose her for Halloween this year.

I used Simplicity 9372 (also sold as 4866 and 4462), which I paid a few dollars for on ebay. Much easier for me than self-drafting.

I sewed size 7, and had to take an inch or two off the bottom.

I took some of the point out of the sleeve, and omitted the cuffs. I used one black frog closure from Jo-ann rather than a hook and eye.

I used Robert Kaufman Carmel Suiting in black and the lining is burgundy China Silk polyester.

For the blouse and skirt, I used the Oliver + S Music Class pattern. Perfect for a school uniform or recital.

How to create a hermione granger costume

The blouse is Robert Kaufman Zazibar Shirting in optic white. I wanted something wrinkle-free. I went a little overboard and did the entire thing in french seams.

The skirt is cut from a grey wool blend that used to be a long, wrap skirt that belonged to my grandmother. Yay for more family upcycling!

The pattern is just four pieces and was very quick to make.

The Gryffindor patch is from the Harry Potter World website and the tie is from Amazon.

I wish I could have found a child’s size tie. I thought about making one but. been there done that (probably won’t be hand-piecing a striped tie again, ha!). She’s wearing black ballet tights.

Louisa and her dad made the wand. Hermione’s wand is 10 3/4 inches, for your reference. 🙂 We found a suitable stick on a hike recently and they whittled it, sanded it, drew some vines in brown Sharpie, and lightly stained it with some stain we had left over from other projects.

HOW DO I MAKE A HARRY POTTER COSTUME?

You’ll notice that these Harry Potter Halloween family costumes aren’t fully DIY, making them an easy last minute idea. They are mostly pieced together using store bought pieces and stuff we have around the house. Would you call that semi-DIY? All I know is, thank goodness for Amazon Prime!

To put together this semi-DIY Harry Potter costume, you will need:

HOW DO I MAKE A HERMIONE GRANGER COSTUME?

Like the Harry Potter costume, I pieced together this Hermione Granger costume using store bought pieces. The nice thing about these costumes is that my kids already had majority of the pieces in their closets for their own school uniforms. I found the wig on Amazon and it was a super close match to Hermione in the first movie. I gave the bangs a little trim and it was ready to go!

Here’s what you need to put together this Hermione Granger costume:

HOW DO I CREATE HARRY POTTER FAMILY HALLOWEEN COSTUMES?

For Lord Voldemort, I decided to just go ahead and purchase a costume. You could probably piece this one together with some white face paint and a black robe, but I took the easy route. For the Sorting Hat, I used the hat that was the centerpiece of our recent Harry Potter book party and simply wore a brown dress. Easy peasy!

Here’s what you’ll need for a Lord Voldemort and Sorting Hat costume:

Lily is a devoted Harry Potter fan. She’s been reading the series since last Christmas and has just completed the 6th installment. Given this obsession, it was obvious that Harry Potter was going to play heavily into her choice of costume for this Halloween. After all, what nine year old girl doesn’t want to be Hermione Granger? We have been gathering bits and pieces of her costume for a few months now but when it came to finding a suitable wand, we were stumped. A trip to Ollivander’s Wand Shop in Diagon Alley was out of the question and Michael’s was clean out of vine wood and dragon heart string but we put our heads together and found a way to make a wand that looks pretty close to the real thing. Here’s what we did.

What you will need:

  • wooden dowel from local hardware store
  • sharp knife
  • glue gun
  • paint
  • varnish
  • obsessed Harry Potter fan (typically 8 – 15 year old but the odd 40 year old too)

Consult with your Harry Potter fan to create the project plan. Once this is signed off, visit your local hardware store and purchase a long wooden stick.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Grab your sharp knife and whittle the tip of the dowel down to a dull point. WARNING: Sharpening the tip may result in younger siblings stealing the stick and attempting to use it as a weapon against the Harry Potter fan. Beware.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Grab the glue gun and start creating a vine pattern around the wooden dowel.

How to create a hermione granger costume

This will not be easy – especially if you have the Harry Potter fan sitting nearby inspecting your work. Try not to crack under the pressure.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Once you have the vine pattern in place, pat yourself on the back and take a break to wipe the sweat off your brow.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Okay, back to work. Pull out your paint – any old leftover craft paint will do.

How to create a hermione granger costume

This is a really good chance to get the Harry Potter fan involved. Hand them the paint brush, sit back and relax.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Once the paint has dried, slap some varnish on and admire your work.

How to create a hermione granger costume

If you are satisfied with your craftsmanship, invite the Harry Potter fan to conduct user acceptance testing. If you have met your deliverable, you will have gained the admiration of a very grateful Harry Potter fan – congratulations!

Harry Potter Costume

How to create a hermione granger costume

Harry Potter is a character that kids and grownups alike can relate to. And, this easy DIY costume is immediately recognizable. Maroon and gold are the colors of Gryffindor House, so make your look authentic by showing them off in Harry’s tie, scarf, and robe.

Gryffindor Scarf
Sure, you can go the distance and crochet or knit a Gryffindor scarf. But an easier way to pull off the making of this accessory is by hot-gluing patches of gold and maroon felt together to form a neck decoration.

Gryffindor Tie
Start out with a gold tie, and then use red fabric paint to add lines to it. Employ a ruler and a fabric pen to help you make straight lines and paint in between them.

Clothing
Search your local thrift store for a white button-down shirt and a black or gray vest, a pair of black slacks, and black dress shoes. A black graduation robe makes a great Gryffindor robe to top off the look.

Glasses
Also, search for a pair of round glasses at the thrift store, or buy a pair of bifocals and take out the lenses.

Wand
A thin stick from your backyard can be transformed into a wand. Just peel off the bark and use a piece of sandpaper to soften the sides of the stick. For a pointed end, take a small knife and whittle the end to a point. Apply a dark or light wood varnish to your smoothed wand.

Follow the instructions for the scarf, tie, and robes from the Harry Potter costume above.

Clothing
A local thrift store should also have clothing for Ron. Try to find a white button-down shirt and a black or gray vest, a pair of black slacks or black drawstring pants, and black dress shoes. For a more casual Ron, locate a large red sweater and khaki pants. Dirty sneakers work for a casual look, too.

Hair
Ron’s red hair color is easy to achieve on a blond head with temporary hair dye or spray-on hair color. Or, you can purchase a red wig.

Wand
Follow the same DIY wand directions for the Harry Potter costume, but add duct tape to it to make it look like it was broken and taped back together. A busted wand is a sure sign that you’re playing Ron Weasley.

Hermione Costume

Warner Bros. Pictures

Always the overachiever, Hermione would just love it if everyone dressed up as her! Her prep school outfit, indicative of the Gryffindor House, is easy to pull off with thrift store finds.

Clothing
Hermione’s clothing consists of a white button-down shirt and a black or gray sweater vest, a pleated black skirt, knee-high socks, and black dress shoes. Mary Janes round out her ensemble perfectly.

Hair
Hermione’s hair is a little on the wild side, with crinkly locks that give her a just-out-of-the-shower look. To achieve this, rub a dime-sized amount of styling mousse on your hands and apply it to wet hair. Then, hang your head upside down and blow-dry your hair while scrunching groups of locks with your hand. Once dry, stand up straight and tame your hair into a nice Hermione volume with styling mousse.

Wand
Craft Hermione’s wand as you would Harry Potter’s.

Time Turner
You can make your own time-turner out of wire, metal jewelry hoops, beads, and superglue.

Draco Malfoy Costume

How to create a hermione granger costume

Draco Malfoy is a mischievous bully and everyone’s favorite bad boy. Dressed in the colors of the Slytherin House, Draco’s attire shows his loyalty with a tie, scarf, and robe.

Slytherin Scarf
A green and silver Slytherin scarf is easy to pull off by hot-gluing pieces of felt together, similarly to the making of Harry Potter’s scarf. If you can’t find silver felt, gray works just as well.

Slytherin Tie
Start out with a green tie, and then stripe it up with silver enamel paint and a paintbrush. Fabric puff paints also work and add a bit of texture to the tie. Again, place a ruler against the tie to keep your lines straight.

Slytherin Robe
A Slytherin robe can also be achieved with a black graduation robe. Paint the inside green with fabric paint for an authentic look.

Clothing
Find a white button-down shirt, a black or gray vest to wear over it, a pair of black slacks, and black dress shoes.

Hair
Draco wears his platinum blond locks cut straight across his ears. This is typically known as the “bowl cut” because it can be achieved by sticking a bowl on the top of your head and cutting around it. For a younger Malfoy look, slick your hair back and to the left side. For an older Malfoy rendition, style your bangs with a little bit of gel to create a slight part at the center of your forehead, and then leave the bangs to hang in your eyes.

If you don’t have the right hair color, spring for a cheap blonde wig.

Wand
Follow the directions for Harry Potter’s wand to make this added accessory.

How to create a hermione granger costume

My youngest daughter is a very big Harry Potter fan and seems to know every detail about the topic. In a couple of weeks she is going to Oz Comic-Con here in Melbourne in a Hermione Granger costume and asked me to make her the beaded bag.

I did a bit of research and the blog Finding My Way gave me a lot of inspiration on how to make it.

I have made a tutorial and a pattern that you can download from my tutorials page or use the links. This is my version of the bag and not a replica.

It is a quite easy tutorial and one of those projects where you can play around with materials and embellishments. In addition to cotton fabric I used scraps of velvet and satin. For embellishments I used a braided ribbon and black seed beads and also the decorative stitches on my sewing machine which I usually don’t use very often. I hope you enjoy the tutorial.

Until next time happy sewing and take care!

Hello. I was wondering if you could do a post about how to add a pocket or two inside this wonderful “little” bag. I would love to make one, but really prefer to have my phone in a separate pocket that the rest of the things I usually carry with me.
Thanks. – Alex

Thank you, very good suggestion, I will definitely do a post on how to insert an inside pocket for this bag.

Thank you. I will patiently await you post. Hermione is my favorite female character, can’t wait to make her bag!

Hi Alex, just to let you know there is a post and tutorial on the blog now.

Hermione Granger is one of my all-time favorite literary heroines. So when I was putting together my Halloween costume, I decided to make a little S.P.E.W. badge to pin onto my Gryffindor robes. It even features a tiny bit of knitting since her S.P.E.W. duties included knitting hats and socks for the house elves she was trying to free (without their permission).

Watch this video tutorial to see how it’s done! You can also scroll down for a list of materials, the free knitting pattern, and some links to knitting and sewing tutorials if you need extra help with those steps.

Materials needed to make this project yourself:
-red and yellow felt
-red and yellow embroidery floss
-matching yellow yarn and knitting needles OR other fabric cut down to the same sort of arrow/upside down house shape
-scissors
-embroidery needle
-safety pin with a flat back (I got mine in the jewelry section at Michael’s)
-regular sewing thread or glue

Follow the instructions in the video above to stitch up a super cute accessory for your Hermione Granger cosplay or Halloween costume! If you’d rather see it written down here is the knitting pattern for the top piece:

CO 7 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): Purl.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: P2tog, P3, P2tog.
Row 7: K2tog, K1, K2tog.
Row 8: P2tog, P1.
Row 9: K2tog.
Cast off.

In case you’re new at knitting or hand sewing, here are some more detailed tutorials for all of the stitches I used while making this project. This is a perfect project to learn on because it’s tiny!

Knitting tutorials for the stitches used:

  • Long tail cast-on
  • Knit stitch
  • Purl stitch
  • Knit 2 together (Purl 2 together is the same idea, but purl wise)

Hand sewing tutorials for the stitches used:

  • Whipstitch
  • Backstitch
  • French knots (I only wind my needle once to make the knots smaller)

If you end up making one of these yourself, definitely show me the finished project! Post a photo to #laurenfairweather on social media so I can see how it turned out.

How to create a hermione granger costume

To anyone and everyone that is a bibliophile and has read books since their childhood, there is one saga that you have been familiar with. Harry Potter. The children’s classic, Harry Potter marked an epoch in reading for youngsters and adults alike. A series of seven books with an entire world between them, Harry Potter truly grew with us. And so did all its characters. And for a young, idealistic girl like me, if there was ever a role model fit, it was Hermione Granger. Strong, stubborn, a voracious reader and intelligent, Hermione Granger was all I wanted to be like. She taught me that having bushy hair or crooked teeth didn’t matter. All that mattered was to be intelligent, of your own mind and ambitious. Here are ten other things I learnt from one-third of the Harry Potter trio.

To Be Oneself.

At the age of twelve, Hermione’s worldview of what was real and what was not had shifted. Having never known magic before, it was an entirely new thing to discover and experience. It would have been easy to get lost in the allure of it. But none of this affects Hermione. Her intentions are almost always altruistic. She never uses magic to make life better, easier for herself by cheating through things. She keeps on learning more, is always curious to understand and explain things and keeps true to her nature. Her character also makes for a very ruthless character to come toe to toe with. She would come to stand up to friends without hesitation and use a time-turner to save a prisoner who had been done wrong. She also stands up to a subject that seemed to ride the coattails of magic, though she was wrong about it.

Stand Up For What You Believe In.

Hermione is stubborn. Often considered a bad character trait, people don’t realize the good aspects of being stubborn. A stubborn person always stands up for what they believe in. Their ideals and morals are rock solid and they always hold them close. And so is Hermione. She believes in being hard-working, being right, and doing the right thing. Even when the right thing went against the lawful thing, Hermione stood up for what she believed was right. And living in a world that is so confusing right now, we could stand to learn something.

Don’t Be Afraid Of Bullies.

Hermione is never afraid of her bullies. She stands up to people that challenge her intelligence, challenge her existence, and fights fearlessly everyday to defy their talk. If you need any evidence for this, let me remind you of the time she punched Draco Malfoy in the face. A truly iconic time that was. An even better one was when she led Professor Umbridge into the forbidden forest to the mercy of the centaurs. And didn’t regret even one bit of it.

How to create a hermione granger costumeImage Source

Cherishing One’s Friends.

Despite being bookish, always studying and keeping abreast of her classes, Hermione truly spent time and cherished her friends. To her, Ron and Harry were not just her friends, but her family. She stood by Harry from his first battle with Voldemort till the last. Hermione withstood torture and still accompanied Harry in his quest to find the Horcruxes. That was true friendship and goes unspoken that without her Harry and Ron couldn’t have managed.

Being Honest.

Well, Hermione didn’t always follow this rule. There were so many occasions where she twisted the truth to fit their motives. However, honesty didn’t just mean to speak the truth. It means to carry yourself with integrity, and to do every duty of yours sincerely. And Hermione is an embodiment of integrity.

Valuing Your Self Respect First.

One thing that Hermione always teaches every young girl is that no one can tell you what you are worth. You are special, beautiful, strong, independent and brave. No one else can tell you otherwise. Even when Ron muddles up and acknowledges Hermione as a last resort to go to the ball with, Hermione doesn’t bow down. She instead goes with a person worth the self respect she deserved. And though Ron hurts her a lot by the vitriol he spouts, she cries and then turns her back on his pettiness. Because his pettiness in no way dictates her worth. And that is exactly what you should take away from this lesson.

Read, Understand, Apply.

Hermione throughout the books, is made fun of for her bookish nature. She’s almost always found buried in a five foot long tome and her essays are pages long. However, no one hesitates in acknowledging that she is scarily brilliant. Harry credits his success to her. And the most special part? Hermione doesn’t just study for days on end. She applies her new found knowledge to her life. She is constantly using her education to improve upon her life and that is the true mark of an intellectual.

Face Your Fears.

Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It is your determination to stand up and fight, despite your fear plaguing you. And that is exactly what Hermione teaches us. It is her courage that leads her to get Harry and Ron to realize that the Basilisk is the reason for her petrification. It was her strength of character that helped her to fight in a world that was actively looking for ways to destroy her existence from it. She stood up to her bullies her entire school life, she worked harder and harder everyday to thwart her fear of failure, and did everything to stay on top. She may have had a lot of traits from other houses, but in the end, she was pure Gryffindor.

Be Humble.

It goes without saying that Hermione is one of the most intelligent characters in the entire Harry Potter series. However, we know for a fact that she herself never much brags about it. Of course, she’s always participating a little too much in class, but is that really braggadicio? Or is simply an enthusiasm to learn? Because other than that, Hermione has always shown a fascination to learning new things, and always embraces it regardless of the teacher. Except for flying, Hermione has always loved learning and doing anything.

Heartbreak is part and parcel of life.

We can’t avoid heartbreak. We can only handle how to deal with it. Since her childhood, Hermione has been bullied in Hogwarts. She was told to accept that her existence is a mistake, and that she didn’t deserve magic. Ron, her best friend, hurt her with this thoughtless words and actions. How much ever it broke her, Hermione stayed strong, and brave. She let loose a swarm of canaries on Ron for hurting her, and punched her bully in the face. She knew that good days would always come, but she didn’t sacrifice her present self respect for them. And we could all take a few pointers from that.

2 Mar 2022 2 March 2022

World Book Day is on Thursday 3 March and many children will be dressing up as their favourite characters from books.

The most important thing is that you have fun on the day and get to share your love of books.

If you want to dress up but you haven’t got a costume sorted, take some inspo from the photos that Newsround viewers sent last year .

Send us photos of your costume

Need some more help? Here are four tips for how to put together an easy World Book Day costume.

You don’t have to buy a fancy dress outfit – you might have clothes that work already, and if you don’t, try raiding someone else’s closet.

Stripy T-shirt – could you be Burglar Bill or if it’s red and white – how about Tracy Beaker? A ballerina outfit and you can easily become Angelina Ballerina. A blue dress and an apron and you’re Alice from Alice in Wonderland. The Boy in the Dress? Well that’s very easy!

Although for some World Book Day is a chance to ditch the school uniform, there are lot of characters in books that wear school uniform. Matilda, the Worst Witch and Harry Potter are good examples. Or does your PE kit work for the Football Academy books?

Once you have a basic outfit you’ll probably need to add some extra details.

Find some cardboard and paint and get making! Fancy being the BFG, get a couple of cardboard plates, paint them your skin colour and attach them to the side of your face (with the help of an adult) to become giant ears. Staying with Roald Dahl, cardboard and some orange paint and you could become the peach from James and the Giant Peach!

And if you have some old clothes that you are allowed to draw or paint on, get creative!

Don’t go fishing around your bins, but there are lots of things that you might usually throw away which could be useful. Plastic bottles can be turned into rockets or jet packs for a space-themed book like Goodnight Spaceman.

Or you can use one to make the medicine from George’s Marvellous Medicine.

Do you have any fancy dress outfits at home?

Animal costumes are perfect as there are lot of animal characters in books. A tiger costume is g-rrreat for the Tiger Who Came to Tea. You can even do the Cat in the Hat with a furry onesie, just make a tail with an old pair of tights and see if you can find a hat to go with it!

How to create a hermione granger costume

Last weekend, part one of the seventh and final installment of the Harry Potter series hit movie theaters everywhere. Fans lined up for hours to see the latest adventures of Harry Potter and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger brought to life on the big screen. Now that the trio have left Hogwarts in search of Voldemort’s horcruxes, they have shed their wizarding robes and are able to express their style more fully.

With her classic, sensible look, Hermione Granger (played by Emma Watson) proves that fighting evil while camping in the woods is no excuse for sacrificing style. In this post, I’ve compiled Hermione’s fashion from the movie into three looks so you can easily snag her style!

Table of Contents

Outfit 1: Classic

How to create a hermione granger costume

The most important element of Hermione’s style is her choice of classic, tailored pieces with a preppy edge. She loves to layer T-shirts, cardigans, and button-downs for an interesting look that will also keep her warm in chilly England. For this outfit, start with a classic pair of pants and black flats and start layering! Then add simple accessories like a brown belt and simple bobby pins for your hair.

Outfit 2: Camping

While watching the film, I loved how the characters’ outfits changed to correspond with the mood and colors of each scene. While the gang is camping in the woods, Hermione sports many chunky-knit fair isle sweaters and big, comfy scarves. She breaks up the shades of gray and blue in her outfit with rainbow-striped scarves and mittens.

For a similar look, start with an oversize sweater and add winter extras like a knit scarf, gloves, flannel shirt, and tough boots. Don’t forget the jewelry – I found this necklace that resembles the horcrux Hermione, Harry, and Ron have to take turns wearing.

Outfit 3: Cozy

The final element of Hermione’s style is the effortless way she throws items together. With a closet (or unending bag) full of basics, Hermione can easily mix and match pieces to create many different looks. Try pairing blue jeans with a tee, sweater, peacoat, beret, and converse for a go-anywhere outfit perfect for a fall day.

Hermione’s Beauty and Hair

How to create a hermione granger costume

Hermione has a naturally pretty makeup look and embraces the natural texture of her hair. And this makes sense because, let’s face it – this girl has way too much going on in her life to worry about applying mascara or curling her hair!

To look put together but still carefree, try a sheer foundation with a neutral eyeshadow. Add a bit of color with a tinted lipbalm, and play up the natural texture of your hair with a curl-sculpting cream. When that’s not enough to tame your locks, pull it all back into a messy bun or wavy ponytail with wispy layers framing your face.

Hermione even remembers to bring her perfume while camping (she almost gives their position away because of the scent), so try a light, fruity fragrance like Burberry Brit Sheer, made by the fashion house Emma Watson represented this past year.

Bonus Outfit!: Couture

How to create a hermione granger costume

For Bill and Fleur’s wedding, Hermione abandons her wardrobe of neutrals and gets glammed up in a frilly red dress and heels. The actress herself is fearless when it comes to fashion – her chic new pixie cut looked fierce paired with a lacy, feathered dress at the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Get Hermione/Emma’s glam look by pairing a red dress with a lacy shawl and floral chiffon accessories, like these clips that can be placed in your hair or used to glam up a plain dress.

As a kid, I was a bit of a… okay, a massive geek. While I am in no way saying my level of intellect is close to Hermione’s, or that I was the cleverest person in my year group at school, I loved to learn and threw myself into every experience, just like Hermione would. I always did my homework, raised my hand in lessons, joined the debate team, got to the national finals of a children’s literature quiz and even won a prize for making the most effort in all of my classes. Very reminiscent of Hermione collecting up Gryffindor house points!

To begin with I didn’t feel ashamed – I adored trying new things and broadening my horizons. However, as I grew up, I started to realise it wasn’t cool to be so enthusiastic. The social side of school was rather difficult, and like Hermione, I didn’t have the easiest time making friends. When reading the Harry Potter books, I could always empathise with the way she managed to get on the wrong side of her peers – including those closest to her. After all, it was Ron that called her ‘a nightmare’ with no friends back in Philosopher’s Stone. To be honest, I am pretty sure similar words were said about me.

It wasn’t just my classmates that found me to be annoying, it was also some of my teachers. There was one that suggested at a parents’ evening that it might be a good idea if I just put my hand up less. That was a devastating blow to my confidence. Not only did it seem like my peers thought I was too much, now my teachers did too. Every time I re-read the moment where Snape called Hermione an ‘insufferable know-it-all’, I felt it deeply. It transported me right back to that humiliating time where I felt that I had to make myself smaller and hide a big part of my personality.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Nevertheless, despite connecting with the tougher elements of Hermione’s experience while at school, I could always turn to the stories and to her character for comfort. It was great to find a character that had similar difficulties to me, but it was even better to find one which I could draw strength and inspiration from. I admired the way she handled those situations – and especially the way she kept going.

Hermione kept on learning as much as she possibly could and had confidence in her abilities. She never allowed the people who called her a know-it-all or exasperating to stop her. From the moment she burst into Harry and Ron’s train carriage on the Hogwarts Express, she was unapologetically herself. In fact, if she had allowed the nastiness of others to influence her, then the wizarding world would probably have been a very different place.

There were so many times that Hermione was the hero of the story and came to the rescue. In her very first year at Hogwarts, she was the one that figured out the mystery of Nicolas Flamel. In her second, she solved the puzzle of the Basilisk – long before Harry and Ron. In her third, she was allowed to use incredibly complex magic to travel in time so she could cram in more studying. Hermione was the one who really helped Harry get ready for the Triwizard Tournament. The formation of Dumbledore’s Army was her idea. And out of the golden trio, she was the one that managed to be the most prepared for the Horcrux hunt. What makes her more brilliant, is that these are merely a handful of examples of the fantastic things she did – they barely scratch the surface. If Hermione had let the critics get to her and squashed her talents, where would Harry and Ron have got to?

How to create a hermione granger costume

That’s not to say Hermione always brushed everything off easily – she still showed vulnerability which only made her seem more relatable. Sometimes the animosity she faced did get to her. The most memorable incident being when she hid in the girls’ bathroom in Philosopher’s Stone. As a child, that was often described as ‘sensitive’, that more human side of her was reassuring. She proved to me that it’s how you move forward from hurtful things that matter, there’s no shame or harm in admitting something has caused you pain, but nothing good comes from allowing anyone to keep you down for too long.

This attitude is something that I still try to mimic as an adult. No longer am I the kid who felt as though they needed to curb their personality to suit those around them. I fully embrace my nerdy side and I don’t care if people don’t appreciate that part of me. I still enjoy learning and I won’t pretend to be less intelligent to stroke the ego of others. Luckily, I have found that as I have grown up and moved on from the confines of school, people actually like that part of me – which I didn’t believe was possible as a teenager.

I am also sure that I’m not the only one to take these lessons from this character. There will be plenty of other geeky folk that found it a struggle to find their place and fit in. Yet, Hermione will always be there to show that you should never be ashamed to embrace who you are. That is why the cleverest witch of her age continues to be my hero today.

Wit beyond Measure

Hermione Granger knows a thing or two about one of the most elusive types of magic in the Wizarding World, time travel. She’s done it just so that she could attend all of her classes in a semester. But if we had a time turner, we’d go back to the first time we met Hermione and judge her with a little more wisdom. The confidence this young witch immediately showed might not have made her the most popular but it saved Ron and Harry’s lives more than once.

In the first year, she saves Ron from the devil’s snare with enlightening charm. After that, the uses for her wits are endless from helping Harry see in a storm during a Quidditch tournament. And it’s not all about magic, she knows just what to say when both friends and enemies step out of line or need a little help seeing the light. Hermione might be a Gryffindor, but “wits beyond measure” is still the name of her game!

Confusion about what to wear when dressing as Muggles can lead to some very strange combinations, as seen at the Quidditch World Cup where confused outfits included a kilt paired with a poncho and a tweed suit matched with ‘thigh-length galoshes’.

But the unique wizarding take on style has led to some of the most beautiful, daring and interesting costumes to appear on the big screen.

So, perfect your ’do with liberal amounts of Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion and take your seats on the front row to remember the best moments of Hogwarts high fashion from the Harry Potter films.

Hermione’s Yule Ball dress

Perhaps the most iconic of the non-uniform looks in the movies, Hermione Granger’s Yule Ball dress made us all curse our prom choices.

While in Goblet of Fire Hermione wore ‘robes made of a floaty, periwinkle-blue material’, big-screen Miss Granger wore a stunning pink tiered ombre gown for her date with Viktor Krum.

The dress, designed by Jany Temime, was the perfect frock to signal Hermione’s Cinderella moment – and make Ron insanely jealous, of course.

Ron’s Yule Ball robes

And on the other side of Yule Ball fashion, we have poor Won-Won’s outfit.

After receiving his hand-me-down dress robes from Mrs Weasley, Ron mistakenly thought the frilly get-up was for Ginny, who immediately called them ‘ghastly’. And we have to agree with her.

The ‘lace and dodgy little collar’ were made worse by Ron’s review of his Yule Ball attire: ‘I look like my great aunt Tessie. I smell like my great aunt Tessie.’ Still, better to be on the worst-dressed list than not to be remembered at all.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Luna’s Christmas party frock

Luna Lovegood was a tad more avant garde in her fashion choices – necklace made of Butterbeer caps, anyone? But her dress for Slughorn’s Christmas party in Half-Blood Prince was less dotty, more daring fashionista.

Her silver spangled dress, inspired by a Christmas tree, featured three 3D tiers that could have walked off any haute couture runway.

The film saw Luna wear sparkling star earrings, although we personally preferred her orange radish pair.

Gilderoy Lockhart in general

Okay, so he stole the stories of others to make himself famous, but you can’t deny that Gilderoy Lockhart had style in Chamber of Secrets.

Rocking up to your first class as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in a cravat and a gold cloak took some confidence, but Lockhart managed to turn his classroom into a fashion show. For his duel demonstration with Professor Snape, Lockhart wore a quilted and crested vest, a tasselled cloak and a single glove.

Well, we would expect nothing less from the five times winner of Witch Weekly’s ‘Most Charming Smile’ award.

Beauxbatons school uniforms

Never has a uniform looked as glam than those worn by the students of Beauxbatons Academy.

When Fleur Delacour and her classmates made their grand entrance in Goblet of Fire, we were taken aback by their beauty and grace, but also by their stunning costumes.

Teaming chic blue silk dresses with matching capelets, shoes and hat, this outfit – again designed by Jany Temime – wouldn’t look out of place on the streets of Paris, never mind in a magical school.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Mrs Weasley’s knitted jumpers

‘She’s made you a Weasley jumper,’ Ron moaned to Harry in Philosopher’s Stone – but we can’t imagine any better gift. When Molly’s famed knitted jumpers made it onto the big screen, it was like a big, warm, nostalgic hug. Ron’s was maroon – it’s always maroon – with a big R knitted on the front. Sure, the Weasley kids may not have been fans, but we can guarantee they’d sell like hotcakes in a vintage store.

Fleur’s wedding dress

Fleur Delacour was never going to look less than amazing on her wedding day, but her appearance in Deathly Hallows – Part One exceeded all expectations.

While the book saw Fleur wearing a ‘simple white dress’ as she married Bill Weasley, the film’s take on her gown was much more lavish.

Fleur’s wedding dress was a floor-length white tulle creation, featuring two black phoenixes forming a heart and a matching headpiece.

Designer Jany said she chose the phoenix design because ‘like love, it is eternal’.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Harry Potter is a modern classic and my eldest kid is just getting to the age to start listening to it! My nieces are crazy for the series and my sister asked me to make them fun shirts with a Hermione quote. I figured it was the perfect timing to join in on the annual Happy Harry Potter series hosted by Marissa at Rae Gun Ramblings, sharing a Harry potter svg file! So many bloggers are sharing craft & sewing tutorials and on top of that, there’s an attached big giveaway for Harry Potter goodies, so scroll to the bottom for links to other projects and enter to win.

How to create a hermione granger costume

Of course, I had to try it out for myself! This is the size that the file is set to; for scale I’m 5’2 and about 130 pounds, this is a size large t-shirt. I’ll shrink it down a little for them, they’re tweeny boppers.

How to create a hermione granger costume

If I’m being truly honest, as I try to be, I enjoy(ed) the books but never “fell in love” with the series. I am a huge fan of magic/fantasy, but my heart already belonged to this amazing fantasy series (which is for older ages) when HP came out! But, I’m excited to explore the world of wizardry with my kids now! My photo props were so fun for this post! A Hermione Granger funko doll & the first illustrated Harry Potter book.

I used my Cricut Maker to make this, if you don’t have a digital cutting machine, you could probably recreate this with a freezer paper stencil or applique (though the ‘hermione granger’ text is pretty small and fine). You can read my full review of the Maker in this post if you’ve been considering one!

  • Cricut Maker (is what I used, earlier models would work as well since it’s not cutting fabric) – on Cricut.com or Amazon
  • Iron-on
  • Easy Press (Cricut.com usually has the best deals or Amazon has them as well)
  • Blank tshirt (If I can’t find a secondhand one, I like these blanks)

Steps

How to create a hermione granger costume

Load the file into Design Space and make sure to ‘mirror’ both pages!

How to create a hermione granger costume

You’ll have to clip the thin book cover piece off since it will be layered on top at the end. Make sure to line things up straight with a ruler and apply the bottom layer first, let cool, then layer on the top star page, and lastly the book cover.

You’re done! I used my Easy Press to apply it, which was nifty, but a normal iron works too.

make a wish – geekcrafting for samantha – hermione granger’s beaded bag (part 2 – embroidery)

Here are the colors of the threads I used to embroider and bead the bag.:

Gutermann metallic thread 1000 (Black)

I decided that for the seams in-between the sections that were sewn together were going to be embroidered with a chain stitch in blue. Each separate chain stitch would be separated by a straight stitch in peach/desert sand.

In the center of each velvet section, I embroidered a strip in a feather stitch in blue.

I am definitely following this! I’m so glad I found your post because I have set out to make Hermione’s bag for myself, and it’s really daunting because I’ve never done more than a little sewing before, but that’s what makes it fun, the challenge. Not looking forward to the trial and error process! But I do love how yours is turning out already and I can’t wait to see the finished product! would love to see posts about how you do the ‘ hard’ bottom and the tassel!
good job and take care!: )

Right costume, wrong day

A few years ago my son’s school organised a World Book Day in which pupils were asked to turn up in costume. Two kids turned up wearing full Viking outfits, complete with plastic axes and horned helmets. They looked brilliant. Only trouble was their parents had got the day wrong: they turned up in costume the day before the actual event, and as they had been dropped off by taxi, they had to spend the first part of the day in costume while their fellow pupils were in normal school uniform.

Covid-secure costume

In March 2020, just before the UK went into lockdown, I was anxious about whether to send my son to nursery when he excitedly reminded me that it was World Book Day. Thankfully he had been reading Silly Mr Wolf who had a tendency to place a paper bag on his head. Dressed in a bumbled together outfit – with Covid protection in the form of a paper bag – off he went.

Cruella de Tall

I went as a red-gloved Cruella de Vil, at age 13 in 2009, alongside a group of dalmatian friends whose growth spurts were yet to arrive. I was six feet tall, as I did my growing early, and the resultant photo haunts me to this day. Ten years later, giving a presentation at my former school about careers in publishing, I put the Cruella photo up on screen in the hope that it would endear me to the teenagers and possibly get a laugh. The picture was met with deathly silence so I rushed the rest of the presentation and fled.

The very hungry sleeping bag

Phoebe Marlow as The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Photograph: Judith Marlow

Two years ago, my daughter, then 14, put on social media that she was coming to school as the Very Hungry Caterpillar, with a request for people to spend the day approaching her with fruit. She then went to school in a sleeping bag, and went around the corridors all day repeatedly eating fruit others gave her!

Beaker to the rescue

When I was nine I really wanted to go to school as Hermione Granger, and asked my mum to curl my hair for me. She decided to rag my hair instead and when I took it out in the morning my hair was bigger than a shrubbery! I tried to brush it out but it didn’t work, I thought it would be OK though as Hermione’s hair in the books was big. That’s when my baby brother threw up on my jacket so the outfit was ruined and I had to scramble last minute to put together a costume. I ended up giving up on my magical costume and going as Tracy Beaker.
