Google Photos is available on the mobile app for iPhone and Android, and in web browsers. One of the best reasons to use the app is for the unlimited, mostly free cloud-based photo backup and storage it provides.
Once set up, the Google Photos app will automatically save photos and videos to the cloud and sync them across all your devices, so you always have access to your images.
What to know about Google Photos backup
Google Photos can automatically back up your photos and videos as long as they meet Google’s image size requirements. Each photo must be smaller than 200MB and 150 megapixels, while videos can be no larger than 10GB. On the other hand, images smaller than 256×256 pixels are ignored to avoid backing up thumbnails and icon images. Some newer cameras are getting close to these image limits. The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra can capture 108-megapixel images, for example.
Google Photos backs up most common image formats, including JPG, HEIC (used by the iPhone), PNG, WEBP, GIF, and most common RAW file formats. Likewise, Google Photos supports most common and many uncommon video formats, including MPG, MOD, MMW, TOD, WMV, ASF, AVI, DIVX, MOV, M4V, 3GP, 3G2, MP4, M2T, M2TS, MTS, and MKV files.
Google Photos backs up photos at either “high quality” or “original quality.”
- The high-quality setting slightly compresses your photos and videos to save space, reducing their quality. The advantage of high-quality backup is that it’s completely free — your photos and videos do not count against your total Google Account storage space.
- The original quality setting does not change your photos and videos in any way — they’re stored in the resolution and image quality in which they were originally captured. These images count against your Google Account store, though.
If you use the original quality setting, you might need to subscribe to Google One. Google offers several storage plans for Google One, including 100GB for $1.99 per month, 200GB for $2.99 per month or 2TB for $9.99 per month.
After June 1, 2021, new high-quality images count toward your Google Account storage the same as original quality. You might need to add a Google One subscription at that time to continue using Google Photos backup.
How to back up and sync Google Photos on iPhone, iPad, or Android
- Start the Google Photos app and sign into your Google account, if you haven’t already.
- Tap your account avatar at the top right of the screen.
- Tap “Photo settings.”
After tapping your avatar in the top-right, select “Photos settings.” Dave Johnson/Insider
How to back up and sync Google Photos on your computer
Whether you have a PC or Mac, you can enable Google Photos backup in the same way:
- On your computer, download and install the Google Photos Backup & Sync app.
- Start the Backup & Sync app and then sign into your Google Account.
- Select “Back up photos and videos” and click “Next.”
- Change the folders to back up if needed, or accept the defaults. Choose whether to back up high quality or original quality, and then click “Start.”
How to change Google Photos backup settings on your phone
There are a few ways to customize your Google Photos backup on your phone. The app looks slightly different on Android and iOS, but the steps to control the settings are almost exactly the same.
- Start the Google Photos app and then tap your account avatar at the top right of the screen.
- Tap “Photos settings.”
- On the Settings page, tap “Back up & sync.” You can tweak all the backup settings from the Back up & sync page.
You can make these changes to your backup settings:
- Change backup accounts. You can change the Google Account which is being used to back up your photos. If you are signed into more than one Google account on this device, tap the account name and choose the account you want to back up to from the list of accounts.
- Purchase a Google One storage subscription. If you are running out of storage space for your Original quality photos, you can add 100GB of storage to your account. Tap “Buy 100GB for $1.99/month” and follow the directions to complete the transaction.
- Change your upload size. Tap “Upload size” to switch between high quality and original quality uploads.
- Change when Google Photos will back up your photos. If you want to allow Google Photos to use your cellular connection to backup photos and videos, make that selection at the bottom of the screen. Otherwise, by default, the app will only use Wi-Fi to back up your photos and videos.
How to check if photos are backed up on your phone
To find out if Google Photos has backed up your photos or if there is an issue (such as no Wi-Fi) keeping your photos from being backed up, do this:
- Start the Google Photos app.
- Tap your account avatar at the top right of the screen.
- You should see the backup status in the middle of the screen.

While Apple users can easily use the iCloud storage service, it comes with only 5 GB of free storage. Rather than paying extra, you could switch to using Google Drive on your Mac, giving you extra space and tools in the process.
Once you’ve installed and configured Google Drive, it’ll appear as a folder in the Finder app. You’ll need a Google account set up and configured to be able to use Google Drive.
Installing Google Backup and Sync on Mac
To access Google Drive on your Mac (and not from a browser), you’ll need to download and install the Google Backup and Sync software.
Head to the Google Drive website and click the “Download” button under the “Personal” section.
Agree to the terms and conditions to begin downloading the software. Open the DMG file once the download has completed.
In the DMG installer, drag the “Backup and Sync from Google” icon to the “Applications” folder on the other side.
After a few moments, the Backup and Sync software for Google Drive will be installed on your Mac.
You can access it from your Launchpad or by searching “Backup and Sync” in Spotlight Search, accessible by clicking the search icon in the top right of your Mac screen or pressing the CMD+Space bar keys.
Depending on your version of macOS, a warning about using Backup and Sync may pop up at first launch.
Click “Open” to allow it to launch.
You’ll then need to allow Backup and Sync access to your files and allow it to back up your Desktop folder.
Click “Don’t Allow” if you’d prefer not to allow this, but you’ll be configuring these options later. Otherwise, click “OK” to allow Backup and Sync access.
Authorize the same for your Documents folder by clicking the “OK” button.
Click “OK” to authorize the same access for your photos and videos. This will allow them to be backed up to your Google account.
With the correct permissions applied, Backup and Sync will launch.
Configuring Google Backup and Sync on Mac
Once the Google Backup and Sync software launches with the correct permissions, click the “Get Started” button and then sign in with your Google account username and password.
You’ll then need to select which folders from your Mac you want to sync with Google Drive.
Click “Got It” to get started and then select which folders you want to sync in the top section. By default, your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders will sync. You can uncheck these if you’d prefer.
You’ll need to choose the quality of your photo and video uploads. Select the radio button next to your preferred option.
“High-Quality” will convert your photos and videos to a lesser quality, but these files won’t count towards your storage quota. If you’d prefer to leave these intact, choose the “Original Quality” option. This will use your supplied Google Drive storage quota.
Check the “Upload Photos and Videos to Google Photos” checkbox to automatically upload these to Google Photos and then click “Next” to proceed.
You’ll then need to decide which folders from your Google Drive storage you want to automatically sync to your Mac to allow you immediate access.
Click “Got It” to get started. Select either “Sync Everything in My Drive” to sync all of the files from your Google Drive storage, or select individual files by clicking the “Sync These Folders Only” option.
That will provide you with a list of available folders. Uncheck the folders you don’t want to sync, click “Start” to complete the configuration process, and then begin syncing your files.
Accessing Google Drive on Your Mac
Once the Google Backup and Sync software has been configured, a configuration tool will appear in your macOS menu bar. This will give you information on the progress of any syncing files as well as allow you to configure Google Drive in the future.
Your Google Drive folder will appear for you to access like any other folder in Finder, under the “Favorites” section in the menu on the left. You can launch Finder from your Launchpad or by searching for it by clicking the Spotlight search icon in your menu bar.
This folder is where you can add, edit, or delete files and folders to your Google Drive storage. The folder will also appear when you look to save or open files in other software.
Depending on the syncing options you selected during the setup process, your Desktop, Document, and Photo files will also sync automatically to your Google Drive storage, regardless of whether you saved them to your Google Drive storage folder directly.
Photos on Mac features an immersive, dynamic look that showcases your best photos. Find the shots you’re looking for with powerful search options. Organize your collection into albums, or keep your photos organized automatically with smart albums. Perfect your photos and videos with intuitive built-in editing tools, or use your favorite photo apps. And with iCloud Photos, you can keep all your photos and videos stored in iCloud and up to date on your Mac, Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, and even your PC.
A smarter way to find your favorites.
Photos intelligently declutters and curates your photos and videos — so you can easily see your best memories.
Focus on your best shots.
Photos emphasizes the best shots in your library, hiding duplicates, receipts, and screenshots. Days, Months, and Years views organize your photos by when they were taken. Your best shots are highlighted with larger previews, and Live Photos and videos play automatically, bringing your library to life. Photos also highlights important moments like birthdays, anniversaries, and trips in the Months and Years views.
Your memories. Now playing.
Memories finds your best photos and videos and weaves them together into a memorable movie — complete with theme music, titles, and cinematic transitions — that you can personalize and share. So you can enjoy a curated collection of your trips, holidays, friends, family, pets, and more. And when you use iCloud Photos, edits you make to a Memory automatically sync to your other devices.
The moment you’re looking for, always at hand.
With Search, you can look for photos based on who’s in them or what’s in them — like strawberries or sunsets. Or combine search terms, like “beach 2017.” If you’re looking for photos you imported a couple of months ago, use the expanded import history to look back at each batch in chronological order. And in the Albums section, you’ll find your videos, selfies, panoramas, and other media types automatically organized into separate albums under Media Types.
Fill your library, not your device.
iCloud Photos can help you make the most of the space on your Mac. When you choose “Optimize Mac Storage,” all your full‑resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats, with storage-saving versions kept on your Mac as space is needed. You can also optimize storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, so you can access more photos and videos than ever before. You get 5GB of free storage in iCloud — and as your library grows, you have the option to choose a plan for up to 2TB.
Make an edit here, see it there. With iCloud Photos, when you make changes on your Mac like editing a photo, marking a Favorite, or adding to an album, they’re kept up to date on your iPhone, your iPad, and iCloud.com. And vice versa — any changes made on your iOS or iPadOS devices are automatically reflected on your Mac.
All your photos on all your devices. iCloud Photos gives you access to your entire Mac photo and video library from all your devices. If you shoot a snapshot, slo-mo, or selfie on your iPhone, it’s automatically added to iCloud Photos — so it appears on your Mac, iOS and iPadOS devices, Apple TV, iCloud.com, and your PC. Even the photos and videos imported from your DSLR, GoPro, or drone to your Mac appear on all your iCloud Photos–enabled devices. And since your collection is organized the same way across your Apple devices, navigating your library always feels familiar.
Resize. Crop. Collage. Zoom. Warp. GIF. And more.
Create standout photos with a comprehensive set of powerful but easy-to-use editing tools. Instantly transform photos taken in Portrait mode with five different studio-quality lighting effects. Choose Enhance to improve your photo with just a click. Then use a filter to give it a new look. Or use Smart Sliders to quickly edit like a pro even if you’re a beginner. Markup lets you add text, shapes, sketches, or a signature to your images. And you can turn Live Photos into fun, short video loops to share. You can also make edits to photos using third-party app extensions like Pixelmator, or edit a photo in an app like Photoshop and save your changes to your Photos library.
File-sharing programs make it easier than ever to share data — from simple documents to larger video files.
Google Drive is one of the best file-sharing tools out there, and you can even add all of your Drive files on to your Mac computer’s desktop. With Backup and Sync, you can select certain Google Drive folders to keep housed on your desktop, as well.
Here’s how to do it.

Many times you might have received the pkpass format files on your computer via email or another way of data transmission. How do you open a pkpass file? Well, there are multiple ways to open pkpass files on your devices. Fortunately, this file format can be opened on almost all the devices including iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac. In this guide, we are going to show you how you can open this pkpass file format on various devices.
Way 1: Opening PKPASS Files on an iOS Device Such as an iPhone/iPad
The app that helps you view the pkpass files is built right into the OS of your device. The app called Passbook on your iOS device should let you view the pkpass files.
- Open the email where the pkpass file is located.
- Tap on the pkpass file to select it. It will automatically launch in the Passbook app
- To view it quickly next time, you can add the pkpass file to Passbook app. It will be available in the Passbook app on your device.
Way 2: How to Open PKPASS Files on Android Device
If you happen to have an Android device and you wish to access pkpass files on it, then you are also in luck. While there is no built-in app like Passbook on an Android device to view the pkpass files, you will need to download an app from the Play Store that will let you do that.
- Download PassWallet from the Google Play Store. Installed the app on your device.
- Tap on the pkpass file to select it. It will automatically launch in the PassWallet app.
- To view it quickly next time, you can add the pkpass file to Passbook app. It will be available in the Passbook app on your device.
Way 3: How to Open PKPASS Files on PC
If you wish to access pkpass files on a Windows computer, you can do it using two ways.
- Rename the pkpass files to .zip.
- Extract them just like how you would a zip file.
- Then you should be able to see the individual files.
If you do not want to do that, then you can use the Microsoft Wallet app on your PC and that should let you access and view the pkpass files on your computer.
Way 4: Opening PKPASS Files on a Mac
In order to view pkpass files on your Mac, you will need to use the iPhone emulator. The iPhone emulator is built into Xcode for Mac so you need to download and install Xcode on your Mac. And then you will be able to view the pkpass files on your Mac.
If you are having trouble viewing pkpass files in the Passbook app on your iOS device, then you can try restoring your device to an iTunes backup. However, you will not be able to do that if you have forgotten the password for the backup file. If that’s the case, then you can use 4uKey – iTunes Backup to recover password of an iTunes backup within 3 steps.

If you’re taking more photos than ever, there’s no question the gallery on your smartphone, camera or tablet is getting larger and larger. There’s no better place to organize your photos online than Google Photos. Easy to use, free and supported by Google, this AI-centric platform is a must use for mobile photographers. Within two years the platform had already achieved more than 500 million users uploading a whopping 1.2 billion photos every day. Available on iOS, Android and the Web, Google Photos is a fantastic choice. That it offers unlimited storage for free makes it a no-brainer. Here’s how you can get up and running in just a few steps.

Download The App(s)
The first step is always the easiest as you head to the App Store or Google Play to download the Google Photos App.
Once the app is installed, log in with your Google account. After successfully logging in, you’ll be prompted with an important choice – the quality setting. Here, you can choose “High Quality” which means all of your mobile photos will upload at full resolution up to a 16-megapixel limit, and HD videos will upload at 1080p.
Alternatively, you can choose “Original,” which also saves at full resolution, but that will count against your existing Google storage. Having made your selection, the next step is to upload photos and/or videos, and, depending on how many you have, this can take some time. This is the perfect opportunity to sit back and watch a movie.
Uploading Your Memories
The most important step of all is knowing how to back up your photos. On Android and iOS, it’s as straightforward as it gets. On the former, it’s as easy as opening the app and tapping the three line aka the “hamburger” menu button. Select Settings and “Backup & Sync.” Turn it on so that every time the app is opened it will automatically upload new photos and videos in the background.
The same process is in place for iOS. Open the app, tap the menu button, select Settings and “Backup & Sync” and make sure the option is turned on a well. On both platforms, follow the same steps to turn “Backup & Sync” off, stopping the automatic upload. Additionally, each platform has an option to turn on or off cellular data for photo uploading.
Viewing Your Content
Now that everything is uploaded to Google Photos, viewing your gallery is easy. Simply open the app with the default view for your photos. Google automatically sorts by the newest images. If you’d prefer to see your memories on a larger screen, you can also view your uploads at https://photos.google.com.
Tapping or clicking on a photo will open it in a larger frame where you’re then presented with options to edit or share. The editing feature enables a host of options to enhance your pictures including an options to adjust the light or color, rotate, and crop. Sharing is exactly as it suggests, as it brings up the “share sheet” on iOS or the sharing menu on Android. You can text or email a friend a photo, or upload it to another cloud service like Dropbox or print.
There are few aspects of Google Photos more fun than organizing everything. There’s an “albums” icon on the left side which organizes your uploads by Things, Collages, Animations, Videos, People and Places. It’s here that you’ll see the benefit of Google’s AI technology which automatically sorts into these categories. People in particular are quite fun to explore as Google utilizes facial-recognition technology so you can sort photos by friends or family members. Things are equally fun to play around with as Google incorporates image-search technology to identify the subject behind each photo.
In other words, if you take a lot of shots at the beach, Google can identify the beach. Searching for “beach” in the search bar will bring up any photo that is beach-oriented. It’s surprisingly accurate and makes for faster searching than any other photo platform.
Identified by its “star in a box” logo, Assistant is easily one of the most popular aspects of Google Photos. It’s here that users can create albums, prints, movie, collages or animation. It’s also here where Google’s AI technology really shows its stuff by automatically creating movies, collages and galleries from your images.
If you’d prefer to make your own, all you have to do is click on one of the aforementioned options and follow the instructions. There’s no limit to how many albums or collages you can make so the sky’s the limit. Spend a few minutes or a few hours, Google Photos will back it up forever.
Unsurprisingly, there’s a print store as the final menu option for Google Photos. Prints start as low as $0.25, while photo books start from $9.99. Google even attempts to make books for you with suggested options like vacations that its AI technology has stitched together. There’s no reason to ever concern yourself with prints unless you absolutely want memories you can share in person. This service is just one more reason to believe that Google Photos is here for the long haul.
There are plenty of reasons why Google Photos has rocketed to the top of so many lists of best photo storage sites online. Everything from uploading to syncing is best in class. The opportunity to see hundreds, if not thousands, of memories in one place is good for everyone from the casual shooter to the professional photographer. Have you tried Google Photos before? Install Google’s Chrome OS Flex to breathe new life into your crusty old computer.
Before you take your sluggish old computer down to the e-waste disposal site, try bringing it back to usefulness by installing a Chrome operating system. Google has opened the downloading gates to Chrome OS Flex , a new iteration of its versatile OS , and it might be the perfect solution if your older Mac or PC is having trouble swallowing updates to its native operating system.
Flex is designed to modernize older computers by installing a leaner, cloud-focused OS. While it doesn’t have all of Chrome’s features, Google promises it will basically make your Mac or PC look and feel like a Chromebook running Chrome OS .
Google says Chrome OS Flex will provide a “fast, modern work experience from anywhere” that will make your gear boot faster, access VDI (virtual desktop interface) and web apps quickly, and prevent it from slowing down over time. Plus, it’s free.
While overhauling your computer with Chrome OS isn’t a new hack — CloudReady came out in 2015—Flex OS provides more flexibility that warlier options by offering dual-booting, allowing users to easily switch between operating systems with a simple restart.
Before you install Chrome OS Flex, know that it is in early access mode, so there could be bugs/instability. Also, i t won’t do everything Chrome OS does—some features are dependent on the hardware you’re using to run the OS, and Google Play and Android apps aren’t supported at all. (Here’s Google’s list of the differences between Chrome and Chrome OS Flex if you need more details.)

If you use Google Meet for group video chat and video calling, you might be interested in knowing that you can also screen share through Google Meet.
Like most other Google Meet features, screen sharing is easy to use and quite convenient, and while we’re focusing on using this from a Mac, it works basically the same on Windows too.
Whether it’s for personal, business, work, school, a presentation, or just for fun, read on to learn how to use Screen Sharing with Google Meet on your next video call.
You’ll need the Chrome browser and a Google login to be able to use this feature.
How to Use Screen Sharing with Google Meet on Mac / Windows
Make sure your Mac is running macOS Mojave or later before you get started with the procedure. Windows users will want to be running a modern version too. Assuming you already know how to make video calls using Google Meet, let’s take a look at the necessary steps to start screen sharing.
Launch Google Chrome on your computer, head over to meet.google.com, and sign in with your Google account.
Once you’re in the Google Meet home menu, click on “Join now” to begin a video chat session.
Now that you’re in an active call, click on “Present Now” located at the bottom-right corner of the window.
This will open a pop-up on your screen. You’ll have options to share your entire screen, application window, or just the Chrome tab. Choose your preferred option and click on “Share”.
You’ll get an error message saying that your screen cannot be shared since Chrome lacks the necessary permissions. Click on “System Preferences” from the message as shown below.
This will automatically take you to the Security & Privacy section. Here, choose “Screen Recording” from the left pane and check the box next to Google Chrome. You may be prompted to relaunch your browser, but you can refresh the Chrome page and click on “Present”.
You’ll be notified when you’ve started sharing your screen or window. To stop sharing the screen at any point, click on “Stop presenting” in the active video call video.
There you go, that’s how to share your screen with other participants during a Google Meet video call.
This wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the native screen recording functionality that was introduced with macOS Mojave. If your Mac is running an older version of macOS, you won’t be able to screen share with Google Meet, though other apps may work. For Windows users, you’ll need a modern Windows version for the same reason.
Google Meet can be used by anyone with a Google account, which makes it very convenient. Users can create meetings with up to 100 participants for a time duration of 60 minutes per meeting for free, compared to the 40-minute limit offered by Zoom free meeting plans.
Do you use an iPhone or iPad alongside your Mac? In that case, you’ll be pleased to know that you can share your iOS device’s screen during a video call using the Google Hangouts / Meet app in a similar way.
Google Meet’s video conferencing and screen sharing capabilities come in handy for meetings, presentations, work, school, personal calls, and so much more, whether you’re in an office, at home, or working from home during a quarantine. Screen sharing can be used to share the content that’s displayed on your screen with all the other participants in the video call, making it easier to communicate ideas effectively.
Google Meet is one of many video calling services that also offers screen sharing capabilities, so if you’re not keen on using Meet for whatever reason, you can try out alternative options like sharing screen in Webex Meetings, screen share with Zoom, or even using the excellent Screen Sharing native feature in Mac OS (though MacOS native screen sharing is limited to a single user and doesn’t offer group broadcasting… yet anyway).
Did you share your computer screen using Google Meet? What do you think of this option versus the other myriad choices out there? Let us know your experiences, and any particular tips or advice you have in the comments too.
Are you so used to using emojis on your phone that you feel lost when you use another device? Want to know how to get emojis on your PC or Mac? That’s what this tutorial is all about. Why should phones have all the fun?
Sometimes, a single emoji can sum up an emotion that would take several sentences. They are a unique method of communication that have literally changed the way we express ourselves forever. What was once a niche Japanese form of expressing things they don’t usually express as a culture has become a global phenomenon for portraying emotion.
As well as giving people the ability to portray emotions without words, emojis also allow you to say things without causing offense or annoying the recipient (mostly). They are a non-adversarial way of expressing feelings and you can often get away with saying something with an emoji that you wouldn’t get away with using words.
Not all emojis are not installed by default on a PC but since the Fall Creator’s Update, you have more options than ever before. Mac has a bunch of emojis installed too.
How to use emojis on your PC
If you have the Windows 10 Fall Creator’s Update, you have access to a new emoji keyboard. It wasn’t advertised much and certainly didn’t get the kind of attention other new features did but it is there. The upside is that a lot of emojis are present. The downside is that you can only add one at a time before the keyboard disappears so you have to call it up every time you want to add a single emoji.
To access emoji on your PC, press the Windows key plus ‘;’ (semicolon). You should see a window like the image above appear. Select the emoji you want and it will be inserted into whichever app you’re using at the time. Use the tabs at the bottom to select between categories.
You can also use keyboard shortcuts for more basic emojis if you find the new keyboard unwieldy. Press Alt plus the corresponding number in your keypad to call one of these fine emoji.
For example, Alt + 1 brings up ☺, Alt + 2 calls ☻ and so on.
Finally, you can use the Touch Keyboard function in Windows 10 to access emoji. You can create a shortcut to add to the Task Bar to make this easy if you like. If you are using Windows 10 Fall Creator’s Update, you just need to right click an empty space on the Task Bar and select Show touch keyboard button. An icon will then appear next to the other icons by your clock. Select the icon and the touch keyboard will appear at the bottom of your screen. Select the emoji button to the left of the space bar.
How to get emojis on your Mac
Macs also have emojis built in on newer versions of MacOS. If you’re used to using them on your iPhone, you will find similar ones available on your Mac as long as you have updated to the latest OS version. It’s a similar setup to PC, a small window that allows you to select emoji and insert them into an open app as you see fit.
To call the Character Viewer on Mac, press Control, Command (⌘), and the spacebar to access it. Use the tabs at the bottom to select your category or search if you know what you’re looking for. The corresponding emoji will then be inserted into whatever app you have open and selected at the time.
The Mac version of the emoji keyboard works much better than the Windows version. It remains open to allow you to select multiple emoji. It can also be activated between apps, so you can switch between open apps on your Mac with the Character Viewer open and insert characters into whichever is active at the time.
If you have a Touch Bar Mac, you have another option. Whenever you’re using Message or other app that support emoji, the Touch Bar will populate the icons so you can select them directly.
If you want to get emojis on your PC or Mac, you now know how. Both recent versions of Windows and MacOS has support for emojis and a selection of common ones built in. The Mac way of doing things is better but Windows lets you get things done too.

During the last Photo Crush challenge, eliminating duplicate copies of photos was the most frequently-discussed topic. Not only are your photos in multiple locations, but you’ve got copies spread across numerous devices and drives.
In this post my aim is to provide a clear path out of the weeds for both PC and Mac users. With intentional action, you can consolidate your photo library and stop worrying about your memories getting lost in the clutter. Here’s how to begin:
Step 1. Prevent New Duplicate Photos
It’s time to draw a line in the sand. Everything that came before may be in disarray (and take some time to sort), but from here forward you can do better.
Don’t wait until you’re totally organized to commit to more purposeful photo management. You can start where you are right now.
So what’s the secret to preventing duplicate copies? There are several:
* Your photos should have a clearly designated home. Your #1 objective should be to get your images from each camera or device to that home.
* The entire photo library should be backed up in at least one (ideally two) locations. Automated backup can reduce the anxiety that leads to duplicates.
* When transferring images, always check which photo was the last to be imported. Then, import only the new pictures to your photo home. Clear off your memory card once the newest images have been backed up.
* If you do make a copy (for whatever reason), delete the duplicate copy as soon as you feel assured the file transfer has completed. A spot-check is often sufficient.
Step 2. Consolidate and Compare
Setting yourself up for future duplicate avoidance should feel like a big relief. With that zone under control, you can turn your focus to the photos you already have.
While there is duplicate-locating software for both Mac and PC, it’s not where I personally believe you should begin. Software is no substitute for good old-fashioned human eyeballs on the situation and can even make the progress more complicated that it needs to be.
I don’t recommend taking shortcuts when it comes to protecting your memories.
Remember the “home” I mentioned above? That’s where the master copy of every photo lives and where you’ll focus to eliminate duplicate files.
Start by creating a set of nested, chronological folders designated with years and months. If you have a particular subset of your photos that’s in the best shape, you can move just that subset into this folder structure. (If you don’t, that’s OK too.) This is your starting point.
Next, copy all batches of images to a location near that home. For example, create a “to sort” folder near your master photo library. Don’t worry about organization yet, simply copy every folder from every device into this location. You can label those incoming photos by location too, such as “photos from laptop”.
If you have a drive space issue, you can create multiple “to sort” folders or store your “to sort” folder on an external drive with sufficient space.
Note: The security of your photos is super important to me, so I am recommending making copies here. You might find it helpful to write down the original location of each folder you copy. Once this process is complete, you’ll be able to delete the originals.
So now you have a collection of folders within a “to sort” folder. They contain photos from multiple devices and you’re not sure which, if any, are already “home” in your master photo library.
Here’s the most important part: One sub-folder at a time, compare batches of photos to what’s in your home. The chronological structure will help you know where each image belongs. Using large icons or a preview pane can help, as can arranging your windows side-by-side.
Photos that already exist in the master photo library can be flagged for deletion by appending the folder name with “duplicate – to delete”. Photos that don’t exist in the master photo library can be moved into that structure.
While this process can take some time, it is the most straightforward approach. Folder by folder, you can determine which files are duplicates and which are not. And by being clear about which location is the master, you will avoid confusion.
Your goal is to move every non-duplicate image into the master photo library and be left with a “to sort” folder full of sub-folders flagged for deletion. With your master photo library newly-organized (even if only roughly), you can back it up in at least one location. This will leave you with the confidence to delete photos across your devices, eliminating duplicates once and for all.

It is frustrating that you want to upload your photo to social media like Instagram or Facebook, but your photo is oversize. At that moment, Wondershare PixStudio may do you a favor. It provides you a fixed-size canvas for Facebook or Instagram, you can start your design at your will, and you do not need to crop your photo repeatedly.
How to crop photo easily
Step 1: Go to PixStudio and choose the target design. If I were going to post my photo to Instagram, I may choose Instagram Post.
Step 2: Upload the photo that you want to crop, and then drag the photo to show the part that you want to present. Choose your fancy effect you would like to have, and then try to drag “Intensity” to adjust the effect to your favourite.
Step 3: Now you can get the resulting image and you can download it for free.
How to crop photos with Photos App on Mac
For starters, you can crop and edit your photos on Mac using a Photos App for Mac. You will simply need to update your mac to any Mac OS X from Yosemite and later to use this amazing native app.
This is an app that can help you keep your photos organized while you can also edit your photos in a non-destructive fashion. As for the former, photos app for mac organizes your photos, videos, memories, favorites, people, and more in a library.
You can also do more with the photos app for mac including playing slideshows, sharing photos (via iCloud, mail and social media) and editing your photos.
Talking of editing, let’s look at some of the crop maneuvers you can do with this free photo editing app for mac.
How to Crop a Photo As a Rectangle on Your Mac
Cropping your photos using the Photos App for Mac is quite easy. Just double click on the photo you want to edit and click on Edit on the upper right corner of the app’s window. If you want to edit a photo in another folder, then you will simply need to import the photo by clicking on File>Import to open the photo. Once you have clicked on Edit, you will get a range of editing options. Make sure the crop Icon located at the left part of the editing panel is set to square or a rectangle. If it is not a rectangle or a square just click on the arrow on the arrow next to the box to toggle.
Then click on any part of your photo and you will get a rectangular or square outline-drag into expand depending on the area you want to be covered in your new photo. You can resize using the blue dots that appear at the corners and sides of your cropping outline and once you have got your area, click on the Crop button at the top of the menu and you are good to go.
How to Crop a Photo into a Circle on Your Mac
Cropping your photos into a circular shape is pretty much the same as doing in a rectangular way. The only tweak, in this case, is to select Elliptical Selection in the Crop Icon. Again, after selecting this, click on your photo drag your cursor around the photo. A crop outline will appear in a circular shape having blue dots that you can use to resize the crop area any way you want to.
How to crop photos with Preview App on Mac

Your old photo prints are priceless and remind you of your fond memories, friends, relatives and loved ones who may or may not be with you. However, one major problem with printed photos is that they can gradually deteriorate or get damaged, even if they are placed in an album.
Convert Printed Photos to Digital Format Using Scanner
While there has always been an option to scan printed photos using a scanner, not many people take this route. Buying a good quality scanner is expensive and using the scanner to digitalize old photos is time consuming.
However, if you care for memories, you will be willing to spend the time and the money to preserve them.
Since there are various types of scanners and scanning software, the steps to scan photos and edit scanned photos can vary. Hence, we are providing below only some broad guidelines for scanning photos, instead of offering step-by-step instructions to scan photos.
1. It is important to setup or place your scanner in a dust free environment.
2. Remove dust from old photos by using a clean microfiber cloth.
3. Clean the scanner glass using microfiber cloth or an alcohol-based cleaning wipe
4. Select a minimum resolution of 300 dpi for scanning 4×6 inch photo prints.
5. Choose a higher resolution (600 or 900 dpi), in case you want to be able to enlarge 4×6 inch photos.
6. Make use of the Editing options in the scanning software to crop, adjust colour and improve the digital copies
Take Photos of Printed Photos
Another option that is commonly used by many users is to use a Digital Camera or the Rear Camera of an iPhone or Android Phone to take photos of printed photos, in order to produce a digital copy of the printed photos.
While this option manages to produce a digital copy of your printed photos, using this option often results in poor quality images with glare and crooked edges.
Outsource Photos For Scanning
In case you do not have the time for scanning hundreds or thousands of printed photos, you can outsource the job to Photo Scanning services like Digital Memories, DigMyPics or EZPhotoScan or find a local scanning service in your area.
The advantage with a local scanning service is that job is most likely to be performed by local staff and not outsourced to countries with cheaper labour. Also, you will be able to test the quality of the service by starting with a smaller job.
Use Google’s PhotoScan App to Digitalize Printed Photos
Google’s PhotoScan app automatically crops out photos, rotates and adjusts photos to the best possible orientation using Edge Detection and Perspective Correction Technology.
The app also features Anti-glare and Auto-enhancement functions to help produce enhanced digital scans of your printed photos.
In general, Google’s PhotoScan App provides better results than taking photos of printed photos or scanning the Photos using an average quality scanner.
Google’s PhotoScan app is available for free and can be downloaded on your Android Phone from Google Play Store and on your iPhone or iPad from the App Store.
1. Download and install the PhotoScan app on your iPhone or Android Phone.
2. Place the printed photo on a flat surface
3. Open the PhotoScan App on your iPhone or Android Phone.
4. Next, position the Rear Camera of your phone over the printed Photo and tap on the Shutter button.
5. You will see four circles appearing on the Photo.
6. Now, move your phone over the first circle and hold it, until the circle is selected. Similarly, move your phone over each of the 3 remaining circles, until they are all selected and filled.
As you move your Camera over the 4 dots, the PhotoScan app takes photos of the printed photos and combines these 4 photos into a single Digital Photo.
Once you have covered all the four circles, the PhotoScan app will automatically rotate, crop, colour correct the photo and save it to your Phone.

Your IP address is sort of like your home address: without it, the mailman wouldn’t know where to deliver your packages. Without an IP address, the internet won’t know where to send your packets of information either. It’s important to know your computer’s IP address and your router’s IP address if you want to make changes to your WiFi username and password, your security preferences, and more. Here’s how to find your computer’s IP address and your router’s IP address on a Mac.
If you want to know more about what an IP address is and what it does, check out our previous article here.
How to Find Your Computer’s IP Address and Router’s IP Address On a Mac
To find your IP address on a Mac, go to System Preferences > Network and select your connection in the left sidebar. Then click Advanced > TCP/IP and you will see your computer’s IP address next to IPv4 Address and your router’s IP address next to Router.
- Click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Then select System Preferences.
- Next, click Network.
Note: You can also access your network preferences by clicking on the WiFi button in the top-right corner of your screen. Then select Network Preferences.
Next, select your network. For example, you can select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, depending on how your computer is connected to the internet.
Note: If you are just looking for your computer’s IP address, you can find it in the upper-right corner. However, it is important to note that it’s your computer’s private IP address, not your public IP address.
Private Vs. Public IP Address
IP addresses can be divided into two different categories: public and private. A public IP address identifies your network or computer on the internet, while your router will assign all your connected devices with a private IP address, which are only identified on your network.
Think of it this way: your public IP address is like your building’s address, while your private IP address is like an apartment number. So, you can have the same private IP address (such as 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.0.1) as someone else, but you won’t have the same public IP address.
To find your public IP address, you can go to whatismyipaddress.com or search Google for “what is my IP address.”
Now that you know how to find your computer’s IP address and router’s IP address on a Mac, check out our article on how to change your WiFi name and password on a Mac.
